CFB Week 8 Thread

The next two weeks are light on games. Only five games with SEC teams in them this week, four next week. But State and OM play both weeks so let’s keep the ball rolling.

Ole Miss-LSU is suddenly more interesting than I expected it to be. LSU running for 300 yards on Florida last week was totally out of the blue. I was ready to call this an Ole Miss blowout and now I’m less sure. Here’s thing with LSU, you know they’re very talented and can flip the switch and beat 99.9% of the teams in the country on any given day. So you’ve got that risk if you’re Ole Miss. But as long as Corral is healthy, I do like the Rebs at home in what I’m assuming will be their best crowd of the year so far. I’ll say OM wins 41-34.

State-Vandy is either going to be an uninteresting blowout or interesting in a bad way. State could really use a win by a sizable margin here. Vandy is really bad and playing their backup QB. This game should not be close. But State has struggled to break 30 all year so I hesitate to pick that here. I’ll say State wins 34-13.

Bama hosts Tennessee. UT is improved but I can’t see them keeping it that close in Tuscaloosa. A&M should beat SC comfortably too.

OM over LSU - I think this will be the shootout that I expected last week.  If Corral doesn’t play, I don’t know hat to expect.   OM 45-31

State over Vandy - State needs a convincing win.  I think they’ll get it.   Vandy has a backup QB and they weren’t very good offensively to begin with.   If Rogers doesn’t play, I don’t know what to expect.  State 35-10

Bama big, A&M big, Clemson/Pitt could be good.  I’ll go with Clemson.

Pretty lopsided games expected in the SEC this weekend- other than Ole Miss/LSU.

No line on Arkansas/Arkansas Pine Bluff due to no telling how big Arkansas wins.

Bama favored by 25 over Tennessee. IF Hooker is healthy, MAYBE UT covers but Bama still wins by 14 or more easily. IF Hooker is out, I'll take Bama 42-0ish.

A&M favored by 19.5 over USC. Which A&M team shows up? Closer than 19.5 if A&M plays like earlier in the season, but USC is just bad... I don't see A&M losing and it shouldn't be close.

MSU favored by 20.5 over Vandy. Vandy whizzed away their best shot at an SEC win last week against USC. MSU wins easily, and should cover.

Ole Miss is favored by 9 over LSU. OM should win, and I lean they'll win. However, I don't see Ole Miss winning by 9 or more. I suspect this game will come down to the wire. IF Corral isn't pretty healthy, bet the farm on LSU.

Scrolling midweek scores:

#14 Coastal Carolina suffered their first loss last night at Appalachian State.

5-1 Louisiana is struggling with 1-5 Arkansas State 28-27 in the 4th quarter tonight.

Are these possibly signs of unexpected scores this weekend ahead?

There seems to be one weekend every year where upsets abound. Vandy nearly won last week. Just sayin'.

I may leave the internet forever if State loses to Vandy. That might be the worst loss since Maine if it happens, definitely right up there with losing to Tulane a year after Katrina (man the Croom years were brutal, sincerely hope I’m not on the verge of re-living that).

I disagree that the Croom years were brutal. Yes there were some epic failures in there but he had to do what he did. Which was to purge the program of the talented malcontents that were left over from the Sherrill era. I love Coach Sherrill but his last couple of years were bad. As a result we lost about 20-25 players between the end of 2003 and the start of 2004. Mostly really good players but ones who were not disciplined enough to make it under him.

The program went through some painful years from 2004-2006 but I am convinced that the success that CDM had was because of the foundation and recruiting of Croom and his staff. That 2010 team was loaded with talent and in essence they were almost all of Croom’s recruits. Now to CDM’s credit he built on that and made it better. But he came in to a good situation because Croom left him a very good situation.

I believe we will win tomorrow and win big. I completely agreed with Coach Leach in his assessment of the game last Saturday. We had individual players trying to do too much individually. I do believe it was a blip and a learning experience as well. We will play much better tomorrow as a team.

I see where State is wearing maroon pants tomorrow. Ugggghhhh I hate the maroon pants. The all white w/maroon trim road uniforms look awesome. Why can’t we just stick to that?

I can see now that are going struggle in this game and probably win fugly , something like 23-17. Sigh….

Could be true Satch.

State has wins over currently ranked #17 A&M and #18 NC State.

Georgia has wins over currently ranked #15 Kentucky and #19 Auburn. Both of these are using the AP poll, add Clemson for Georgia if we're using the USA Today poll.

It sounds good for MSU, but makes folks question even more... how did MSU lose to Memphis and barely escape La. Tech??

Team is very inconsistent. Some of that is youth, a small part is coaching although I think our staff is good and are preparing the team well.
It does leave you scratching your head.

Probably the biggest stat is turnovers.

Against NCSTATE and A&M, we played clean games and the difference was enormous. Against La Tech, Memphis, LSU and Bama turnovers were costly.
Even against Bama, the two early turnovers led to an easy blow out. If we play a clean game , Bama still wins but the score is considerably closer.

The next issue is against Memphis, LSU and Bama we did not convert in the red zone. Getting 0 points or 3 points versus 7 points will come back to bite you over the course of a game.

Over the next 6 games those two indicators will most likely tell the tale on how State performs.

We will see what happens.

Just now, MSTSatchmo said:

LSU looked like they were going to run for 500 yards on their first drive,  but since then OM has defended the run well.

First and second drive. LSU marched it down the field easily the second drive also, but then got stopped. For whatever reason, O went for it on 4th instead of taking an easy FG and OM intercepted. That began the defense playing pretty well (so far) today.

Snoop and Parrish are showing some power today.

Arkansas and MSU won easily, as expected.

Ole Miss covered the spread and won by 14. LSU may start Nussmeier next week, he did pretty well in the 4th quarter.

Agree Satch, I was happy with the Ole Miss running and defense today.

Auburn will be a tough test next weekend.

Vandy was just what the doctor ordered for State. Most offensive points scored in a game since Leach has been here. This is probably more about Vandy being awful than anything else, but it’s a big improvement from last year when State only won 24-17 with 200 yards of total offense against VU.

Kentucky coming to town next week is HUGE. A win all but seals bowl eligibility, a loss means you need another road win or will have to win the Egg Bowl.

That should be a really good game to watch, that's all I'll comment for now until you start the Week 9 topic. 🙂

LOL, I’ll probably start the thread on Tuesday or Wednesday but I’ll leave it to you guys to keep the conversation going next week. I’ll be out of pocket next weekend and probably won’t get to watch any games on Saturday, which is unfortunate because I find both AU-OM and State-UK really interesting.

State wins a much needed game. Interesting stat. In the conference, State is 2-0 on the road and 0-2 at home.
Just don’t see that too often in football.

UK @ State is an interesting match up. Last years game at Lexington was probably State’s worst of the year. More on it later.

Ole Miss @ Auburn is another intriguing matchup. I think Ole Miss wins this game.
