CFB Week 5 Thread

Biggest week of the season to this point in terms of interesting games, especially in the SEC.

Bama/Ole Miss is the big one and I expect a highly entertaining game. Corral and Young have been the two best QBs in the country to this point. This was a very competitive game last year (unless you are a fan of defense, lol) and I expect something similar this year. Last week I was ready to pull the trigger on an Ole Miss win, I think I have backed off on that a little. I’ll take Bama 48-38. But I think there is a path to an Ole Miss win, and if it happens, it probably looks similar to how they did it in ‘14 and ‘15 (force turnovers, take advantage of opportunities).

State-A&M has low scoring rock fight potential. I had this pegged as a sure loss for State before the year, but I think this may be more winnable than I initially thought. A&M has big issues on offense right now, although they are still very good on defense. I don’t think I can pick State to win, I am still in prove it mode in terms of winning some of these games. But I could see this going like the Georgia game last year. I’ll take A&M 21-14 but it wouldn’t totally shock me if State stole a win on the road. Leach’s record against A&M historically is very good.

Quick hits on some other games:

Arkansas/Georgia - I think Georgia wins by 2-3 TD’s but if Arkansas somehow wins again, go ahead and give Pittman the Coach of the Year award.

Florida/Kentucky - I like Florida in this game, think Kentucky’s record is a bit inflated. Really impressed with what Mullen has done with this group, he is maybe the best in the country at adapting to his personnel.

Auburn/LSU - don’t love either of these teams, but Auburn hasn’t won in Baton Rouge in forever, so I’ll take LSU at home.

Cincinnati /Notre Dame - Huge game with playoff implications, I’ll take the Bearcats.

I’ve got three upset picks as well. Kansas State over Oklahoma, Maryland over Iowa, and Wisconsin over Michigan.

Should be a really fun weekend of games, will be hard to leave the recliner.

I'd call Georgia/Arkansas the big one this week- battle of top 10 teams. Georgia has looked a TAD better than Arkansas and hosts, so I guess I'll pick Georgia. I really don't like this pick either way, should be a very good game.

No former Saban assistant has beaten Saban. That will change sometime, but I wouldn't bet on it this weekend. I like this Ole Miss team and see them winning 8-9 games (leaning 9). In year two, I'll very gladly take a 9 win season under Lane. I like Ole Miss to keep it interesting, but Bama to win. 48-38 is a fair guess.

A&M/MSU, I'm with you on that one also. MSU's D is pretty good, unless you throw over 10 yards against them. A&M doesn't throw over 5 yards it seems.... very close game. I'll take A&M since they host.

I think Kentucky's record is more than a bit inflated, Florida will win easily.

Which Auburn team shows up? Auburn at Penn State or Auburn vs Georgia State? Complete guess- Auburn came in sleeping vs Georgia State and shows they're better than that this weekend with a win at Baton Rouge.

Cincy/Notre Dame- Huge playoff implications for sure... but between 2 teams that will exit the playoffs after a blowout if they make it IMO. I'll take Cincy also.

I like your 3 upset picks. None of them may happen, but all 3 certainly have potential.

I am not going to pick the State game other than I agree it will be a low scoring ugly defensive game.

Ole Miss breaks the assistant coach hex and beats Bama 45-42. Bama is just due for a loss. They skated by Florida and I think they are vulnerable this week. It is going to happen.

Florida 40, Kentucky 10. Florida in a romp. I thought they may have had a letdown last week against Tenner but they took care of business.

Auburn-LSU may be the only other game that could be uglier than the State-A&M game. Going out on a limb and will say Auburn wins 22-21 in a fugly game.

Arkansas beats UGA if they have Jefferson and they have a two score lead late. If it is only one score, then the officials will ensure that UGA wins a tight one.
If Jefferson does not play, then UGA wins comfortably 24-7.

ND beats Cincy. Okie beats KState, Michigan over Wisconsin (that hurts my fingers to type that but Whisky is terrible and they will out bad Michigan for the loss) and Mary Land will wimp out against Iowa.

A&M 31 State 14  Same old story.  A couple big plays and lack of productive drives do State in.

OM 42 Bama 38  An OM win here puts them in the playoff talk and Corral in the Heisman lead.

UGA 24 Arkansas 14  If Jefferson doesn’t play UGA will win by 14+

Florida easily over UK.  After halftime.

Auburn over LSU.  I think Auburn will take advantage of LSU’s run defense, which looked bad against State.

I like ND over Cincinnati, Michigan over Wisconsin, Iowa over Maryland, and KState finally gives severely overrated Oklahoma an L.

Agree with everything except ND over Cincy. I think this is the year they get in the playoff.

There is one main thing that is worrisome to me about the OM Bama game. Does Corral press to much. He has done a great job of not pressing and taking what the defense is giving. But this is his first time really in this spot light on this stage with these expectations. OM success Saturday will depend on his ability to stay within the game plan and not try to force it.

If Ole Miss wins it will be directly related to some weird plays that Coral is involved in. I'm expecting a ball to bounce off a shoulder pad or a foot and then fall in the hands of Mingo as he runs full stride for a TD.

Drummond maybe, most likely not Mingo.

I am not worried about Corral. He ain't gonna be perfect all year but I have no reason to believe he won't be at least good even against Alabama on their turf. What I'm worried about is can our defense stop them? They can't run up and down the field all day and us have a chance to win. We have a great offense but I don't think we will just torch them every time we have the ball. They are just too good for anybody to be expected to do that.

DEPTH. Bama has it, Ole Miss doesn't.

It's out now, Mingo out with a broken foot.

Ole Miss having to really grind to get yards today. The explosive play has not been there to this point. Just doesn’t seem like the talent at receiver is the same as previous years.

Kiffin’s 4th down decision making has been…. Interesting to put it nicely.

I agree.  Bama and UGA made statements today.  OM and Arkansas are still good teams, they just ran into teams with something to prove.

I wouldn’t even question Kiffin’s 4th down attempts.  He knew he needed to score TDs.

I’ll say this about OM’s defense though, and Arkansas, they both were still physical just overmatched. You like to see that after giving up big leads.
