CFB Week 3 Thread

Miss St. is merely undisciplined and playing up and down to the level of their competition. We saw it against La-Tech where Mike Leach's team didn't take them seriously and it took a miracle to come back and win by a single point. Then we saw it again where NC-State blows out South Florida 45-0 so MSU takes them serious and our defense plays lights out. Then we saw it again in week 3 on the road vs a Memphis team that ASU dropped 50 points on the week before and MSU thought even in a shootout, we would win. MSU unlike Alabama, plays down to their competition so far under Leach. Alabama on the other hand enjoys beating the brakes off both good and bad teams and all types of teams in-between. I've never been more unimpressed with the discipline level of a squad than this years team under Leach.

Did Alabama just beat the brakes off of Florida?

You make some valid points. I think Leach has tried to drill this into our players but they had to learn the hard way yesterday. As painful as the loss was, I hope it works it out for the better in the long run. Forget all the issues with the officiating. Had we played clean football and taken advantage of our scoring opportunities, the score in the third quarter is 24-0 and the game is over with because there is no way our defense was going to give up that many points (in fact they only gave up 14 points on the day).

Leach has been doing this a long time. I know he hates to lose but this loss might just be what this team needed. We have great potential but we are consistently inconsistent and that will not win many games.

Memphis has been a top 25-40 team in the recent years so why our players would not take this game seriously is beyond me. In this case, I believe our coaches tried to impress upon them the importance of playing hard and consistent every play but as we all know you can lead horse to the river but you can’t….

We will see what happens Saturday.

State played a pretty clean game against NC State, in regards to penalties and turnovers.   That’s what it will take for them to win the toss up games and get 6 wins.

As for the RB's taking hits, it seems to me he takes a little long to get the ball to them and maybe the ball is slightly off target sometimes, putting them in a more vulnerable position.  Sometimes maybe it's a slight delay in the release and others he just doesn't put enough on it.  They don't have time to catch and make a move before being hit.

La Tech lost to SMU so that doesn't say much about them.

It’s pretty rare for any State pass catcher to catch the ball in stride or in space, they are almost always met with immediate contact. It’s not just the RB’s that are going to get hurt.

Marks’s injury supposedly isn’t major so hopefully he is back soon. You could tell Johnson was having to gut it out at way less than 100% at the end of the game, I will never question that kid’s toughness.

I mean if you’re already getting your guys killed against Memphis, what the heck do you think is going to to happen in SEC play if you keep running the offense this way? You are putting some talented skill position guys in a really tough spot and not really giving them a chance to showcase what they can do.

IF things don't work out with Leach at MSU, any chance they hire Freeze?

That would be... interesting.

That would be as insane as having Leach and Kiffin both in Mississippi.  It also wouldn’t be a bad idea.  I know the State fanbase wouldn’t be able to take all the trash talk from OM fans, but you need to score points to compete in the SEC.  Freeze has proven he could score points.

While it would be interesting, I'm split on how I feel about it.

As you said, Freeze can score points. He also knows MS and would likely recruit very well. (It's easy to call Freeze a cheater- but seriously... it was proven MSU was cheating under Mullen and outbid Freeze/OM for Leo Lewis... so that argument isn't really valid).

On the other hand, most of the MSU fanbase HATED Freeze, including MSU fan writers like Steve Robertson (which actually spent time going through Freeze's phone records). Watching MSU fans/Steve suddenly defend Freeze would be quite entertaining.

I think it's pretty doubtful it would happen, but sure fun to think about... and not a bad move for MSU IF they can swallow some pride.

Mark Keenum will never allow Hugh Freeze to be hired. Not a chance.

The thing is you are kind of married to the Air Raid now. The roster is being recruited to run this particular offense, and going to back to some kind of power running approach will take another pretty big overhaul. You pretty much would have to hire someone who leans more toward pass heavy unless you want a major rebuild.

If Graham Harrell is still a coordinator whenever Leach is done, maybe he gets a call. Sonny Dykes at SMU is worth a look. Those are just a couple of names off the top of my head. Don’t think this is a serious conversation until late 2022 at the absolute earliest, though.

This conversation will erupt if Leach only wins homecoming and Vandy and at this point that is exactly all I expect from them.  I see now why Abraham was brought in.

Eh, Leach bringing in transfer QB’s is nothing new. I also don’t think Jack’s skill set is much different from Rogers. Really do hate that he got hurt and didn’t get much of a chance to compete, though.

He obviously has nobody ready were Rogers to go down.  I'm figuring Daniel Greek is farther along than any of the other backup QB's.

Robertson isn’t ready yet so you may be right. I wish he had been here for the spring.

Generally speaking I don’t have any issues with Rogers in terms of ability, and some of his numbers are actually pretty good, but the issue is he has to be the entire offense. And when you combine no running game with a risk averse, ultra conservative passing game, you’re just not going to score enough points to be any good.

It is wwwwwaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy premature to even talk about a coaching change at State.
Leach has coached 14 games, probably half the roster that was here last year has been purged, so the whole development of the program is still a work in progress.

The issues that you all have brought up are legitimate but they are also things that can get better or be improved upon.

I have no idea what will happen Saturday against LSU. LSU will obviously play their best game against us. We did a lot of good things this past Saturday that have been overshadowed by the dumb things we did.
If we develop some consistency across the board we can win Saturday regardless of how LSU plays. If not, we can very easily lose this game.
We will see what happens.
