Not to say that would happen again in a Regional, but at least Bianco probably has a plan if it goes 4 or 5 games. For State, no earthly idea what the plan would be if it went 4 or 5 games. I’m not even 100% sure what the plan is for Game 3. I’m pretty sure it involves Harding in some capacity, but not sure if that’s as a starter or long reliever. They most definitely have capable arms all over the roster, but finding more than a couple of starters has been a major challenge all year. Between Cerentola, Smith, and Fristoe, the fact that none of the three have been trustworthy as a starter has been a bit frustrating. Last week was a pleasant surprise by OM with the game 4 and 5 pitching, it sure does give hope if it's needed. Taking the season overall, I sure rather it doesn't boil down to that pitching. Pretty much all the teams are in the same boat, a lot of things could definitely go unexpected if it goes to game 4 and especially game 5. Bulldogs4
Great job of pitching by Bednar, Johnson and Simmons. Bednar did not have his best stuff but threw seven innings. The big key for State was we only walked two batters. Huge. Samford hit three HR’s but all three were solo shots. You start walking batters and that solo shot becomes a three run homer. That along with expanding the lead was very important as well. Good opening win. I am also glad we played the first game. I know it sucks for the fans but for the team it is overall better. Now we don’t play again until tomorrow evening. Plus our fans enjoy baseball so I am sure it will be a huge crowd tonight. rebmus
Good win for State. USM lost to Florida State in the Oxford regional. In a bit of a surprise, Florida lost their opener.
Bulldogs4
Tough loss for USM. They were playing well and just let it get away from them in the late innings. Florida losing not really a surprise. With all the talk swirling around Sully and LSU, that creates a big distraction for the team. Dylan Dodd looks like a legit pitcher for SEMO. OM is a good hitting team but this game may not be a gimme for OM.
Dawg83
State got pretty much exactly what they needed. Long outing from Bednar, won without having to use Sims, and the two relievers they did use were both short stints, and they can probably pitch tomorrow if needed, and definitely by Sunday. Some will criticize the decision to burn Bednar, now that we’ve seen the game play out I do think it was probably the right move. Samford’s lineup showed some pop today, and had you thrown someone of a lesser caliber it could’ve ended poorly. 4, I think you nailed it, State not allowing free passes was enormous. It’s not often you give up three homers in a Regional game and still win pretty comfortably.
Bulldogs4
I think pitching Bednar was the right decision. If McLeod is on, then we will be fine tomorrow evening. For the most part he has pitched very well throughout the course of the season.

I knew LSU's coach "retired", but haven't had time to keep up with possible replacement names.
Dawg83
No idea how far OM's postseason run goes, but regardless of if they are done this weekend or they end up in Omaha, this Tim Elko story is pretty special. Even as a State fan who hopes Ole Miss loses every game in every sport, what that guy is doing is wild. rebmus
Ole Miss wins game 1, will face FSU tomorrow evening to try to stay in the winner's bracket.
rebmus
14 of the 16 #1 seeds have won today. Florida is the lone loss. Arizona is down 4-2 in the third inning, way too early for much concern but we could have 2 #1s take a loss today.
Dawg83
VCU is absolutely destroying Campbell so State will play a red hot team on a 22 game winning streak tomorrow night. MacLeod has been inconsistent but State will need a strong effort from him tomorrow. Not totally sure what to expect from that game. Stranger things have happened but you have to like OM's chances tomorrow with Nikhazy against a bad hitting team. The key will be whether or not they can close it out on Sunday and Monday. It's early in the weekend so it's difficult to have too many takeaways yet. Tomorrow may be telling for a bunch of teams, though.

Yep, getting the first 2 wins is the key to advancing to a super regional. We'll see how tomorrow goes for these teams. I saw the VCU score, I didn't realize they were on that huge winning streak. MSU is the better team, hosts, and has their best pitcher tomorrow. I'd bet on MSU to win. OM winning tomorrow with Nikhazy on the mound looks like a good bet also, but we'll see. MSTSatchmo
OM should win tomorrow with Nikhazy pitching. If they get half the pitching performances in game 3 that they got in the SECT, they’ll advance to the super regional. I don’t know what to think about VCU. I think they’ve hit 5 homeruns tonight. Dang.
Bulldogs4
Concerning VCU, yes they are on fire but maybe they peaked tonight. 5 HR’s and 18 runs is tremendous but sometimes it is hard to duplicate that performance again. We will see how it plays out tomorrow evening. I look for both USM and OM to win tomorrow and then see if USM can beat FSU Sunday afternoon to get a chance at OM Sunday night. Dawg83
SEC ended up going 6-3 on Day 1. Losses by Florida, Bama, and LSU. And 15 of the 16 one seeds won as well, that feels like more than usual. Make of that what you will.

MSTSatchmo
6 homeruns already in the Samford/Campbell game. What’s up with that? That’s, I believe, close to 15 homeruns hit in Starkville so far.
rebmus
Florida eliminated with a 19-1 loss, ouch. Southern Miss won 21-0 today to stay alive.
Bulldogs4
What a thud for Florida in their own regional. Nice bounce back by USM Bama still alive LSU struggling with UCONN-Central and a football game has broken out at DNF between Samford and Campbell
