Judging the South- Slick Seven Points October 3

Wayne County-  Whew!!!  I’ve been ostracized,criticized, plagiarized,  politicized , fried died laid to  the side and nailed to the cross for my strong take on the state of things.  Somebody told me that everything is right there to be had because region is starting and I was bringing pressure. It’s true the not so tough region is starting Friday. I can’t comment what may happen but that corner is getting smaller and smaller. I will be first in line to put them up on my shoulders if things turn around. Pressure ? Wayne County is pressure . We thrived when the pressure is on.  Like a great coach once said Pressure is a privilege not a curse. I’m sure some are angry. Won’t be the first time. We will still be friends. I don’t take back anything. I feel like some are taking lightly what we look like.

Not Coach Hankins. The man is grieving and grinding over this it’s apparent.  The man is an all star but between the lines it’s not carrying over. I honestly don’t get it.

 

Ok enough of that.

 

Hattiesburg . You shouldn’t have to last minute George County. Sorry. No way the team that pummeled Laurel should have fell off that much. That doesn’t bode well for the heavyweights you are going against down the road.

West Jones has to come to y’all so there’s that at least. More on this one down the road 

 

Is anyone in 5A worth a dam ? Somebody tell me. West Point had a big win last Friday they could be coming on.

 

Picayune going to Pascagoula .  I would like to go to this one. I might. Picayune will be down ten points getting off the bus. The first TD they make will be called back. Guaranteed. Sims usually has one good game per season in him. They haven’t seen the wing in a while so that doesn’t bode well.

 

I’ve watched a little of Ocean Springs. There is a raw toughness to the way they play compared to before. Battle tested. Stay tuned.

 

I kind of made fun of Stockstill for leaving a championship team in Scott Central and going to sad Pass. There is no doubt this cat is a rising star after what he’s done there in a short time. I underestimated this guy. I was wrong .

 

Howard-Cosell I extended the invitation to have input every week. You have slinked away. I think I understand why. It’s still open. Maybe later. I think I can come up with enough every week. I’m getting my groove back.

Slick as to WC you are right. I was an have been there for all the glory years, 

several of those that ended a West Jones state championship run for my team.

And as Merlin, I have enjoyed the lately. 
But just watching the WC offense the last  few years, I’m asking “what exactly are they trying to do?”. There is no deception, there is no calling these plays to setup this play. And I understand they may not have a Lampley or Johnson, but my gosh they have some winning players on offense. I just don’t get it.Something is holding them back an I don’t think it is Hankins himself.

I’m thinking that the George Cty. we saw earlier, the GC that Hattiesburg saw, and the GC that hits the field in the playoffs will be three different teams. Once Knight gets back in synch with his offense, they will be much better. They won’t beat Picayune or West Jones, but they just might be the third best 6A team in the south eventually.

So they just took the night off ? Sandbagging for the region ?  I saw George County defense the week before they  stopped  us but who hasn't .  I wasn't impressed and they didn't improve that much in one week if a team can pass any at all they will wax them.  Hattiesburg can't pass anymore ? Ya'll should have had the size advantage on the line of scrimmage too.

You telling me ya'll played as good in an OT game in  Lucedale as you did against Oak Grove and Laurel ?

Brutal schedule.  I was shocked to see they came back and beat Tupelo, blanking them in the 2nd half.  No shame in losing early to Starkville and Louisville who is my pick as best overall in North half (again). 

 

Not a slam dunk, but they should be in great shape to make it back to the final weekend if for no other reason because of the shake-up.  5A feels the impact more than any other class imo at least up here.

Yes. Hattiesburg dominated the line of scrimmage Friday night. We played the officials and the team and still somehow won the ball game. Thst speaks volume. Film don't lie. And why throw the ball when you don't have to? I guarantee you this if we have to we will.

Sounds a lot like the gameplan they had for us the week before too.  Without phantom calls from the refs they would have been scoreless. Not that we deserved to win.

I agree! I don't like the state of 5A in general. Laurel and WP are the 2 I expect to play for the 5A title. Holmes is 6-0 but looking at their schedule I'm not truly sure how good they are with the teams they've played.

Laurel is currently 1-5.  Just sayin'.  Surely there's got to be someone better in 5A South.

Call me crazy, but Gautier might actually be the best team in Region 4-5A, at least right now. Region 3 has Brookhaven, Florence and North Pike who might factor in. 5A south is a mixed bag right now in my opinion

Provine has the best record in 5A South right now at 4-2.  Take that as you will.  It probably won't hold a drop of water though.

If Gautier had any coach other than the one they had, they’d have a shot. They are so hell bent on being an “air raid” team that they completely disregard any run game. They run the ball a few plays successfully and then abandon it completely, especially near the goal line. 5A south seems really really weak. It might actually make the division race and playoffs fun lol

Gautier has spurts where I think ok they might take the division but then like last week, offensively they stunk it up against a good Columbia team and had terrible miscommunication issues in the secondary. Also coaching leaves a lot to be desired.

I can agree there, but High will just flame out if he makes the playoffs.  I certainly don't trust him, do you?

Absolutely not. When Gautier made the trip back over there for South State and I saw Picayune come out and rush 3 and drop 8, I knew it was over. I could’ve left after the first play cause I knew what kind of night it was gonna be.

5a south is a crap shoot. Any of the 8 teams that make the playoffs has a shot at going to the championship game. And I don’t have a clue what 8 teams that will be. There’s no great team in 5a south. There’s a few average teams and then everyone else.

They had a tough non-district schedule to me. I thought we'd go 2-3 or 1-4 but I still thought we'd make to the State title game. I could be wrong about laurel but I feel they've been battle tested.

Look at who they played tho. I think Laurel would be 6-0 with those teams. If not Laurel then maybe Florence. 5A is awful all around

I agree with everything you said.  My problem is that I like to try to use a conventional line of thinking.  Well guess what?  With the way these classifications are watered down now you really can’t.  When you schedule tougher opponents and you come up on the short end of the stick like in Laurel’s case it absolutely has no bearing on region play or postseason play.  If Laurel can run the table in region play and navigate their way to the playoff finals, nobody will remember they started 1-5 because what happened in non-region play was just vanity.

I think their game last Friday hosting McComb is still up on Facebook . Go watch the second half of that game. Laurel has no defense and is soft.  Them short dawgs on the McComb lines was fighting them off. They don’t have a running game. I thought they had the same QB from last season. That QB now looks like he’s pulling light poles trying to get to the edge. The one last year could fly.

Like you say though it could be anybody. I look for someone in our district to start getting better and better now that it counts. Things are starting to play out very different from what I expected from all these non region games. I think they are going to be revealed as foos gold on both sides of the won loss column. Let’s see.

You think it will be a WP whipping? We are getting better and I'm glad about that. I just hope they keep up the intensity cause the level of competition seems to be about to drop for us in district play. Don't honestly know what to expect from Lafayette and Clarksdale.

What else will it be?  I know you're not conceited about it and that is appreciated, but unless someone in the South miraculously gets better I really don't see a different outcome.
