Back home from Davis Wade. The final tally on concession stand trips for the 4 year old only ended up being three trips…. But we also left after the bands played at halftime lol.

 

Kamario Taylor is the most talented QB that State has had in my lifetime. He’s not the best QB yet, but he could become that. I love Dak Prescott and it will be extremely hard for Kamario to ever surpass what Dak did at State…. But 2013-2015 Dak Prescott did not have the raw physical tools that Kamario has.

 

That being said, he is still raw. Gaudy numbers tonight but did have some iffy moments that I saw. He’s got a big challenge coming up the next few weeks. State goes from playing what might be the worst team in FBS to playing exclusively very tough games for just about the rest of the season. But man am I excited to watch this dude play. He is extremely fun to watch.

 

I thought State’s OL looked a lot better tonight, obviously will have bigger tests coming up. I thought the defense was just OK, but hard to tell if they were intentionally being vanilla. It didn’t seem like you saw a lot of the trademark Arnett blitzing, but also didn’t think State’s DL had just a great game. Not much penetration or much doing from a TFL standpoint. We’ll see what next week brings.

 

I was raised on watching State teams that had no offense whatsoever, so looking at the box score and seeing 62 points and 762 yards against an FBS opponent, that’s pretty darn cool, even if not against good competition.

State looked like you are supposed to look like against an inferior opponent. Overall, a good night. 
We will have a better sense of how good we really are after the game at Minnesota. 
Really has the makings of a good game. 
LSU just took Clemmie about behind the woodshed for an old fashioned a** whooping.

I’ve been thinking since the egg bowl game last year that Kamario is the most talented Wide Choice (Vear & Shoot) QB that we’ve ever seen in cfb. The big thing for him is staying healthy this year. He’s pretty slippery and doesn’t take big hits though, a lot like Lamar Jackson in that regard

And last night, you could tell he was cognizant of not getting hit. Several times he went out of bounds or slid down after a run. Honestly I think he was only tackled once the entire evening.

Now granted it was ULM but still good overall.

He had two bad passes. Which are going to happen. And two other times he just needed a bit more touch on the pass. 
But I am nitpicking here because he was just plain good and the ceiling for him is the sky. 
 

Defensively we were very vanilla but that was all that was needed. Their TD was just a busted assignment, simple as that. Again nobody is going to be perfect. 
 

Now the season really starts at Minnesota.

It looks like after a sloppy start Ole Miss is going to pull away from Louisville in the 4th quarter. Chambliss had a pretty poor first half but has been pretty dominant in the second half. I thought OM had a weird gameplan early but eventually opened up the offense more and had success doing that. Louisville has done some really dumb things to shoot themselves in the foot but certainly OM deserves credit for taking advantage of it.

 

So now prepare yourself for two weeks of total nonsense leading up to September 19th. And who the heck knows what that even means given the parties involved.

Spoke a little bit too soon, Louisville rallied to tie it, but OM wins on a walk off field goal. Fun game. I think that pass D is going to keep OM people up at night the next few weeks. But obviously Chambliss is a difference maker and that felt like a game where he just willed them to a win in the second half.

 

That said, this didn’t do much to change my mind about my 8-4 Ole Miss prediction.

Louisville is one of the better teams in the ACC and Jeff Brohm is a really good coach. They probably feel they gave the game away with dumb mistakes tonight. OM had some goofs too especially early. But Louisville’s gaffe’s were enormous. Specifically the snap over the punter’s head and roughing the kicker on a missed field goal.

Louisville out mistaked Ole Miss last night. The bad snap was the worst but using all your time outs in the third quarter was a major mistake as well. Chambliss is really good but his short stature hurt him on that third down play where he could not see his receiver. A first down there ends the game. 
 

It is very difficult to play a good team the first game of the season. Naturally there are going to be some growing pains and mistakes. Credit to Ole Miss in finding a way to win at the end. 
Both teams are worthy of their rankings.

If both quarter backs are still upright and healthy, the EGG Bowl will be massive.  The Ole Miss secondary seemed to lose receivers downfield a good bit and I'm not sure who needs to step up on the Ole Miss Offense because I don't think they can simply expect Trinidad to pull a rabbit out of a hat late in every game. This could possibly be solved by a better defensive effort as well.  I have no idea how many wins MSU will have by EGG Bowl time.

Whatever the "other" clock said, I don't see how you can give another play on the Michigan deal.

That roughing the kicker was so bad.  It was a 56 yard FG AND the guy wasn’t even trying that hard to block it.  If you’re not laying out don’t even get that close to him.  
 

OM’s defense was good when all they were concerned about was Lville running. After the QB started making some plays through the air, they gave up a lot of yardage.  OM knows what they need to work on now though AND got the win.  Can’t complain too much about that.

 

OM will get better on offense which is scary, but they will definitely be a big play team.  Tough to see Lacy go out early.  
 

I was surprised Lville’s QB got so much better after the half.  I wasn’t sure if they’d score again at that point.  They’re a solid team and that’s a good win.

I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that the Egg Bowl is something like a 7-4 Ole Miss versus a 6-5 State and it feels like a toss-up. Or it could be a 9-2 Ole Miss versus a 3-8 State led by interim coach Phillip Montgomery. Who the heck knows.

 

When you take emotion out of the first weekend, you can make a strong case that we didn’t learn much about either team this weekend that we didn’t already think. OM knows they have a very good QB. State has a lot of reason to be optimistic about Kamario. Both teams have questions at other positions. But a dangerous QB is a good starting point for any team.
