2026 Baseball Season

Recommended Posts

What an insane weekend of games.

Number 1 and number 2 overall are gone.

First time ever that two 4 seeds are in a Super (and we could still have a third).

Troy is leading Florida right now and will host a Super if they win.

And you could still have a Kentucky vs Cal Poly super as well.

What on earth….

Never wanna see a mid-major cali school or a sun belt team in your regional

Baseball is totally different than football or basketball when it comes to referring to schools as a P4 or mid major. There's a lot of P4 talent playing at those mid major schools.

There are a ton of really good high school baseball players that get spread around the country. You look at Delta State and William Carey here in MS. Those two schools are probably mid level D1 programs playing at the DII and NAIA level.
That is why I said there are no real upsets in baseball when you get to the Regionals. Every team is capable of making a run.
Very competitive and that is what makes it fun.

First it was UALR winning the Hattiesburg Regional as a 4 seed. And pouring salt in the wound is Troy hosting UALR in a super regional. Of all the regionals Southern Miss has made, including the few they won, the one last week was probably the easiest one they had to get to Omaha. If Southern Miss has another regular season/tournament championship and 40 win season next year Southern Miss officials would be better off not putting in a bid to host and letting them travel. Hosting again would only be added pressure to them.

The pressure of hosting is a real factor with certain teams. Half a dozen hosts lose in their regional every year. This year it was seven.

Hosting can and does create extra pressure on the home team. And that pressure can vary depending on the experience of the team, the expectations of the team and fans, whether they have experienced failure at home over the recent seasons during said regional, the opposition teams of that particular regional (with respect to their own experience) plus the wildcard factors of the fact that anything can happen in a short weekend.

USM lived on some tight margins this year. They had 14 wins 6 losses in 1 run games.

That's being very fortunate (lucky even...) And it bit them in Game 1 at Hattiesburg.

Needed just 3 outs in the 9th against Little Rock, had their closer on the mound, but

couldn't do it again. In Colby Allen's defense though, he was starting his 4th inning there.

Lot to question though if USM's demise was somewhat self inflicted. You could have

been playing Friday night instead of at high noon in South Miss in late May. You could have stuck to your

regular rotation instead of swapping Grayden Harris and Camden Clark. Some opponents get

a chip on their shoulder when you don't throw your #1 in Game 1. You had trusted guys in

the pen to get those last 3 outs if Allen was gassed.

They could have still lost Game 2 anyway, but with their opening regional game record lately,

I would have used any and all within-the-rule options to win Game 1.

OM’s super starting on Friday, State’s starting on Saturday.

I presume OM will keep their starting rotation the same. Auburn may have to shift some things around since their usual Friday guy started Friday and Monday of the regional. They may end up holding him a day.

I think the Saturday start is exactly what State needed. Allows you to throw Valincius and McPherson on full rest in the first two games. Surprised those games are both midday starts, I think you can also argue that works in State’s favor.

I would say both State and OM are underdogs this weekend, but I wouldn’t be shocked if either or both got it done and made it to Omaha.
