Would MHSAA let in a Louisiana team?

Yeah I know it seems like sacrilege and yall can tell me I’m dumb but as a Chalmette, LA Owls fan I’m not liking the district the LHSAA might put us in for the 2026 and 2027 football seasons… we’re a non-select public school that might be going to the New Orleans Catholic League to face teams like nationally ranked Edna Karr, John Curtis, and St. Augustine. All of them are select Catholic and Christian schools that are known to recruit. We’ll know after the third reclassification meeting next week when all districts are finalized.

 

Would MHSAA let us in if we applied? We’d be in 7A-4 to play MS Coast teams, a few of whom we’ve played before, and the travel would be all Interstate, not any longer than the worst travel in LA 5A.

We already have a large influx of Chalmations after Katrina.  Next year will be year two of our current cycle before reclassification again.  If Chalmette wants to schedule some Mississippi schools to play in the non-region portion of the schedule, they are free to do so.  That would probably be as far as it would go.  I remember Jesuit wanted to play some games away from New Orleans for a couple of years so they came to Picayune both years.

What you're saying is that yall would get boatraced every week and cant compete with those teams.

We played John Curtis and Slidell in our Spring Game.  Our JV and Varsity tied with John Curtis, but they lost to Slidell.

I think the Picayune Oak Grove Hattiesburg Tupelo and the West Point type teams could compete with those Louisiana schools

I know Oak Grove beat Neville earlier this season, and Neville is in the nonselect semifinals, but the Catholic League teams are on another level. Karr is top 10 nationally ranked and Curtis and St. Aug maybe should be too, and they’re all in the select semifinals. Then you got Rummel, Brother Martin, Jesuit, and our rival Holy Cross… they’ve all had success recently too. Warren Easton had one of the best programs in the state for a decade and then went 0-14 in two years in the Catholic League so they wanted out.

 

 We’ve had winning seasons for a decade straight, made playoffs in all those years until this one, won 4 playoff games in the last five years, and still don’t want any of the Catholic League. Coaches don’t want it and our principal was at the meeting trying to put us in another district. We’d want to be in the Northshore district but it appears the LHSAA won’t make that move now that they have 8 teams.

We played Catholic a couple of years ago and that was a fine football team.  The game went to OT and they disputably won 36-35.  All I can say is embrace the challenge.  When the going gets tough Chalmette needs to get tougher because you can only play with the cards you are dealt.

That OG loss to Curtis was not a clean one as I recall. Due to some issues with refs and no-calls for sideline interference and artificial noisemakers, OG was unable to hear play calls and nobody did anything about it. Was a shame to see 2 great teams match up and not get a clean game.

It was strange. But we have a couple of good out of state wins many teams can’t say the same.

To answer your question, the answer is “No”, unless the MHSAA changes its rules. MHSAA doesn’t allow eligibility to out-of-state athletes. That was one of the reasons that the River Catholic schools jumped to the MAIS.

I would say they wouldn’t but it wouldn’t hurt to call and ask. All they can do is say no. And knowing the MHSAA, if they can make some money from it they just might say yes

I remember one year Rummel came to Wayne County to play when Wayne Co had Benito Jones on the defensive line. I wanted to see what Rummel was like so I went to the game and sat on the visitor side. Before the game started some of the Rummel fans were joking about how bad they were gonna beat the little country team from Miss. Well once the game begin it was a different story. They could not block Benito Jones at all and he stayed in the Rummel backfield. Rummel was behind most of the game but finally pulled it out in the end when depth got the best of Wayne Co

 Same thing pretty much happened this year when Heidelberg went to Chattanooga to play the top ranked private school in Tennessee.

I would hope not.  They would immediately start to cheat in some way and would cry  about it to MHSAA. See the horn blowing Dub  mentioned..

They can’t be trusted to do business with on any level.  Stay in St. Benard.

I don’t know why you made a thread asking us a question you could had looked up yourself in a just a few minutes.  I have a pretty good idea though.

1 Must be accredited by Mississippi Department of Education 

2 All territory must be in Mississippi  according 3.1.7 of current handbook.

3 One and two above will have to changes beginning at the district meetings and then at headquarters with appropriate committee approval. Best work fast!!

District 7 and 8 meetings are next week. It might too late until Spring to discuss that issue.

Well they put us in the Catholic League that a lot of us didn’t really want to be in… we appealed at the LHSAA twice but were denied both times.

 

it does seem frustrating that we are where we are in our situation and this isn’t really an option, though I understand it would probably be a “forever” decision
