Vott
Both teams with lots of new players and HHS with a new coach as well. Last season it was a 7-3 slugfest in favor of HHS. How does everyone see it this season?
maroontide06
Dang Vott you're getting started early with the gameday threads. They ain't even put season tickets on sale yet LOL. Hattiesburg tends to struggle with Petal even though Hattiesburg won last year. I think you would have to lean toward Petal winning this one, but it could probably go either way. Gotta keep the mistakes to a minimum.

Football In MS
Petal is on the way up. They’re excited about their coach and fired up to be relevant again in football. Meanwhile, HHS’s sails were flying low after getting demolished in the championship game at USM. Their fair-weather fan base bailed at halftime in their own city. QB1 and his daddy didn’t leave on a high note and actually served to show how overrated all the HHS hype was. I’ll take Petal in this one. I wouldn't be so quick to call Petal relevant again in football, but I agree with everything else. I just don't know how many more years they'll get out of Boyles. maroontide06
Just to clarify - when I think of relevancy I think of being of a championship caliber. Boyles definitely faces some headwinds in 7A, but can he navigate them and for how long?

I consider relevancy to be: - are you making playoffs - are you winning rivalry games and I think Petal is set to take a run a both again. Now will they contend for the state title? No. But will they be in the playoffs? I say yes. They’ll round out the 4 teams in Region 3 and I would not be at all surprised to see them with a 1st round win. Especially if they can go in at a 3 seed instead of 4. AND the Petal fan base is a loyal bunch. They’ll show up and show out for their team. Which can bring needed momentum Edited July 14 by Football In MS

If he beats Oak Grove I reckon he can ride off into the sunset LOL. It'll be like mission accomplished.

Okay - never heard of “the Oak Grove burn” before. That’s a new one for me. Is it just a Petal thing or do other schools use this phrase as well? Football In MS
That’s an easy one. They brought Boyles back because he “unretired” by going to Meridian and proceeded to turn that program around! …and because Kelly wasn’t getting it done & Boyles was a known entity who said yes to the offer. maroontide06
I think Petal will win, but it very well could be close. The schedule doesn't really get easier for Petal after this one. They've got to travel to Ocean Springs, Columbia, & Gulfport in consecutive weeks. Then they host Clinton and West Jones before starting district play on the road at Oak Grove and Brandon in consecutive weeks. Just staying intact is going to be the real challenge. Petal will probably take more losses than they want, but this is the nature of the beast. If Petal gets caught looking ahead along with the first game jitters, Hattiesburg can definitely steal one on the road. Both teams can play very well in this contest and still come up on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

The new coach, although he seems to have some type of spark about him, doesn’t have the experience to beat Broyles, especially on his home turf. I still Petal will win by at least two touchdowns. While Petal does have the coaching advantage, this is a major homer take. The talent levels won’t be vastly different but Petal will be improved from last year . It’ll be a close game like it usually is and I’d be surprised otherwise.

I just want to see how well they'll hold up by the time they have to play y'all. They've got a little bit of a gauntlet to deal with. I know y'all have the toughest schedule, but y'all are built to handle it.

Gonna be really interesting to see how hhs manage the talent this season. They got about 5 or 6 players that came in over the summer that will make an immediate impact and that's not including the qb. I know Petal had some talent that came in as well. It should be a good one.
pancho
if the talent is even, who wins off scheme and execution directly from coaching?

HHS offense is going to put points on the board. I dont wanna see the defense giving up over say 24pts per game, but getting into offensive shootouts wont be a bad thing

Lacey couldnt have came into a more perfect situation as a first year HC. Edited August 8 by Rawcones
Eagleman1228
Petal got a (transfer) game changing sophomore qb who has multiple d1 offers from east Marion. Coach Boyles knows what he is doing. Hattiesburg can only throw it up so much, what is Vance doing since he retired?
