How will Laurel be good enough to make the playoffs?  Is North Pike going to be that bad?

The 5a picks were difficult as I am not really sure what teams are bringing back. Only thing I do know is that moving up to 5a in football was not a good thing for Sumrall or Purvis. Laurel only has to win two region games to make the playoffs. And you can 99% guarantee they will beat Sumrall. That leaves N. Pike or Natchez that you have to beat to get in.

Natchez has athletes but tends to choke during district play and playoffs if they make it.

North pike tends to be decent one year crap the next.  Flip a coin on them this year.

Laurel, as always, has the talent to dominate this version of 5A south..  and I know they got issues in the locker room, egos, and outside negative influence.  And I love to see them suffer like last season.  But I also realize they may win 11-13 games.

Laurel ... might win 10 or 3.

Their pre-season prep has been... um... questionable the last few years. Lotsa talent,  no doubt - but the first few games are usually a circus

not just preseason prep.  Some of their own players have commented how their practices are very laid back. They do not push having the linemen run all that much and do not push others as hard in the weight room compared to other programs.  That comes straight from the mouth of some kids they recruited away from other schools.

Laurel looked outstanding in the spring game.

If NE Jones finds a QB, they will be contending late.

South Jones returns a good group and will contend if they can keep Petal and Hattiesburg from portaling anymore of their skill guys.

Right now, I’d go Brookhaven vs Laurel in South State.

Did not know HHS got a player from SJ. I knew Petal did

They always do until they face someone that’s capable of hitting them in the mouth.  They get down they can’t hardly fight back. And if they don’t have a big enough lead they start wearing down about mid 3rd anyway.

Petal also got East Marion QB he’s a stud

I knew about that. Ill have to see if hes really a stud. I looked at their schedule from last season, and their offensive numbers were not great at all. Shut out by Heidelberg and scoring only 8 vs sacred heart. Also had a losing record.

I watched him play a few times, he just needed a better coach and environment

Canton is 6A

So what exactly is the purpose here?  Is the purpose to try to find someone who can stir the pot in 5A?  I’m not saying it can’t be done, but in order to do that it takes the proper tools and you can’t have a cheap toolbox to put them in either.  I get it - nobody likes a stagnant pond.  But are things really stagnant if they are constantly getting replenished?  I can see where that could easily be mistaken for something that is stagnant because you can’t visually see the changes, but the changes are constant.  That’s kind of where West Point is.

Looking towards what the coast 5a teams are looking at EC nor Vancleve stand out.  Stone returns a lot and they have two D1 players.  Wayne County is a question.  Which way will they go…  Brookhaven has a new head coach, I believe this is his first head coach position.  Laurel, well, you just never know.

Are nine regular season games doing to be a thing many schools do? I can see some places with low numbers or who lack a competitive roster doing it but to me it amplifies the fact five or six team regions leave a lot of extra scheduling to do. Let's reduce the number of classes back to five and have larger regions with fewer scheduling holes.

Yes it won't happen but a guy can dream.
