Week 1 Overreactions

1A-Just go ahead and let Taylorsville/Velma Jackson play next week for south championship and winner take on Biggersville to avoid delaying the inevitable.

2A-The only team in the north that’ll challenge the south winner is Union, but as good as their offense is their defense will cost them like last year against Wesson.

3A-JDC will knock off Noxubee and be making the return trip to the championship but Choctaw County and Kossuth told Winona hold up on just crowning you north champ just yet. 

4A-This might be the best competitive year I’ve seen the north in a long long time.

5A-Holmes County Central is finally going to live up to expectations and in a year where 5A is down so they might actually dethrone West Point in the north and bring home a gold ball.

6A-Picayune is the 2nd best team in the state and gonna take home their third in a row.

7A-Oak Grove is the best team in the state and will walk through the season. 
 

The south will win 4 out of the 7 state championships.

Union probably going to stumble before North half

I will say this about 1A and 2A: 

 

In 1A, I said Velma Jackson was a lock to win it all. I still think they win it all for right now, but I no longer think they are a lock. I had suspected that Taylorsville would struggle some early on with losing TK Keyes and most of their line from last season. But that’s not gonna be the case. They are absolutely loaded offensively. Now, defensively they have some improving they will have to do. We moved the ball against them fairly easily, but then again we probably will have a strong offense. But we were expected to be pretty strong defensively and we had no answer for their offense at all last night. They were big, long, fast, and athletic on offense. When Tville and Velma Jackson play, that should be a really really good game to see. 
 

In 2A, I think it’s so wide open that I don’t think there’s any way to have a clear cut favorite. I know Raleigh beat Bay Springs, and I have a feeling Taylorsville is also going to beat Bay Springs too, but by the end of the season Bay Springs will be right in the mix. Scott Central is going to be better than I thought they were going to be, and if I had to call it right now today I would say they win their region and Bay Springs finishes 2nd. Raleigh and Mize play in 3 weeks and I think that’s going to be a very good game. I think both of those teams win their regions. One of those 4 teams (Raleigh, Mize, Scott Central, and Bay Springs) will come out of the south.

It’s a good possibility because it happened to them last year in the 1st round. If they do it’ll be from a Region 3 team whether it’s Charleston, NorthSide or Leflore County.

Raleigh/Mize will be a good game for Raleigh. If Raleigh beat Bay Springs 34-16 no telling how bad they gonna beat Mize which is basically a slower Bay Springs with less athleticism. Mize might not win its region let alone make it to south state. Collins and Heidelberg looked good last night. A fast athletic team is a weakness for Mize; as we have seen Mize's defense isnt very good. Mize is 2nd tier in 2a south; Raleigh BS and SC are 1st tier

I didn’t forget about Starkville. I’m aware they’re legit as the reigning state champ. I didn’t get to see their game against Noxubee. However I did get to watch Oak Grove who is filled with D1 talent put on a clinic against Wayne County. Remember, this is called overreactions though so it’s ok to be wrong.

It should be. When something rarely happens you should cherish those times when it does. I hope you enjoyed the last 3-4 years.

Oak Grove is probably the best team in the state IMO. They definitely took our youngsters to school Thursday night. We don’t have a Senior playing on our offensive line, QB is a Jr WR’s are Jrs and TE is a sophomore. So they got some valuable experience against a team loaded with D1 players. I watched Brandon and Picayune last night and I believe OG is better than both but I do believe Picayune wins 6A.

Taylorsville had 446 yards of offense. Mize had 400 yards of offense. There were 5 lead changes in the game. Taylorsville scored quick on most of their drives. Mize drove the ball most of their drives and used more clock. The game was over once Tville made it a 2 possession game in the 4th and we had to abandon our rush offense and go to the pass only. That’s not who we are as an offense, but we had no other choice because we were out of time. Defensively, I’m not overly concerned because we have a lot of returning starters on that side of the ball. Taylorsville was just very good on offense, much better than I anticipated. I kept waiting for them to wear down but they never really did. Offensively, we have a lot of be optimistic about. We are still a power offense but we also are more of a passing threat than we have been in a long time. Our freshman back ran for over 200 yards Friday night. I’m eager to see how Tville does the next two weeks against bay springs and Raleigh. I’m expecting to do pretty well, especially this week.

He is in the same class as my oldest son. They have played together since youth football when they were 7 years old. He will turn 15 next month. Pretty good basketball player too, he can almost dunk right now. He’s very coachable and had a good work ethic.

Scott central was great against the run and they were great in the second half at running the ball. Honestly think they will beat Bay Springs and they will end up playing Raleigh.
