New Heat rules by MHSAA affecting practices?

That's a fair point about sharing athletes, especially with smaller schools.  It just seems over the years, as the season got longer, football pushed further back into the summer.  Basketball season hasn't changed much in 50 years calendar wise.  I also thought about playing schools in Louisiana or Alabama if they've been practicing two weeks longer than you.  No easy answers.  Everyone would have to turn the page at the same time.

We should continually be trying to provide a safer environment.  Last summer was one of the hottest on record, and this summer will likely be hotter.

Kids don't work out in the sun, like past generations did.  The game can, and should be made safer

Lol. On record…. What’s the record? We have been keeping reliable records for less than 100 years. The problem isn’t the heat, the problem is what you acknowledged at the end of your post…. Kids sit inside all day during the summer now.

I believe you could do away with the preseason scrimmage, make the regular season 10 games no bye week and you could get finished before Christmas break. If they don’t do something you’re going to see a lot of schools with the budgets put up 50 Yard indoor facilities. Small schools will be the one’s paying the price in the long run.

The district of the school in East Texas where I live has a rule that if the heat index gets above 115 degrees in the sun then they have to practice indoors, fortunately we have an indoor facility. Their third day of practice they walked outside and it was 123. They had a gauge out on the practice field and everything.

Seems like years ago, we didn't have our first practice until later sometime in August.  I remember playing games when it was freezing and these were just late regular season games pre 1980.  Start two weeks later like the old days.  Maybe eliminate the off week (nobody likes em anyway).  Maybe we could go to a late season game and actually have to throw a jacket in the truck.

I played in the mid 80's. We began practice the 2nd week of August, somewhere around the 10th. We went 3 days of shorts and helmets and 2 days of shoulder pads the first week before beginning full pads for 3 weeks. First game was the last week of August, usually around 29th-31, maybe September 1 or 2. The state championship games were the first weekend in December just as they are now. This is the same exact schedule the MHSAA is using now with two exceptions. 1. 1st week is mandated shorts and helmets only and week 2 can add shoulder pads. No full pads the 1st 10 days.

Certainly kids aren't acclimated like we were, and that is a problem, but decision makers have to find solutions based on current scenarios..

And the current situation is no different than previous situations, except for the fact that kids are lazier and stay cooped up inside more. The “decision makers” aren’t worried about the kids, they are worried about potential lawsuits

And we could go back to this type format, but that would be less games played, which would mean less money made. And money is the biggest motivating factor for the ones making these decisions. We play too many games

1a through 4a are basically following the same schedule as it used to be. They are playing the same amount of games, 10. They are allowed a 2 quarter scrimmage, but teams have always had a scrimmage, just not against another team. 5a Through 7a have the option of an 11th game.

Wayne County’s pappy buttermilk coaches are in bed by 8:00 pm every night! Lol

I hope they bring some with them to Oak Grove . We can put some in the cornbread I’m planning on baking in the stands before halftime.

Just name the all star teams and not play the game anymore.

 This is the right answer

It’s hotter at 2 pm in a summer baseball game than 7 pm in a football game

Baseball is a summer sport, football is a fall sport. Baseball players are not in a full uniform with pads and helmet running and hitting . Baseball is a lot of standing around.

Ask any athlete who has done both. It’s hotter at 2 pm playing baseball than it is at 7 pm playing football, with it without pads on. The heat index drops considerably at 7 pm than compared to 2 pm when it’s at its hottest
