Are players allowed to follow coaches who move from school to local school?

Let’s do this completely in hypothetical terms, please. Obviously the state association handbook states that any player who transfers to the school where his past coach has been hired must sit out for a year, especially in cases where the school districts are nearby. Basketball has had a couple of cases.  In your experiences, has this rule ever been enforced, and what is the process for bringing a case forward? It’s a good rule, but is it possible to enforce?

I for one dont care if a player transfers to another school. If the family of the best player in the state is playing at West Marion and decides they want their child to go play at Hattiesburg Oak Grove Columbia or wherever that is nobody else business. Thats a family decision that MHSAA has no business being in.

Would  it make any difference to you if the coach in question has moved to a nearby rival school, with contact and possibly recruiting before or after the coach leaving? I understand it happens sometimes in college, but the rules specifically prohibit it.

Nope. Like I said, it is not my business. If an assistant coach at XXX high school gets a head coaching job at YYY high school and the starting QB at XXX wants to follow him to YYY high school thats not my concern. Now I can be disappointed that he left, but I would not be angry nor would I look into enough to report it to the MHSAA

What’s the difference in “my coach has moved over here” as an incentive to move and “they are going to give my parents a. job, money, place to live etc” ? They both are incentives to jump schools. slippery slope you are headed down with this line of thinking.

Like I said, I will not get make it personal if players leave. Thats a decision the parents make. HHS has lost players to both Petal and to Oak Grove. While I seriously doubt Petal and OG gave those players parents a house a job or money it didnt bother me. They made a family decision on what they thought was best. I was disappointed but had no hard feelings. My feelings are what happens on the field and not what takes place off the field.

Okay then, maybe I’ve got my answer. Disappointed in the recruiting aspect that probably started well before the coach left his original school, but if this majority of knowledgeable football guys think it best to move on, I’ll probably drop the subject. I guess hoping that said player gets his clock cleaned during a certain October game would be immature too?

I think we both know who you're talking about David.  My son told me a couple of days ago. If the MHSAA is not going to enforce what according to the rule book is an apparent violation, then they might as well omit all recruiting rules. Here is the rule:
                        3.1.5-

4.A student transfers to a new school within one calendar year of the relocation of his/her coach, including non-faculty, to that school.

                        3.1.6-

Article 3.1.5 (1-4) shall be enforced even in the event the student made a bona-fide move into the receiving school’s attendance zone.

My son has shown me the screen shots the players have saved of the text messages between the player and new HC/DC that he sent through a social media platform.  He has been telling me over the last few weeks that this player has been bragging about how the coaches have been calling him and that he has nothing to worry about.  I did not believe that player was every going to leave as the rule states very clearly, he would not be able to play.  When my son told me he withdrew from school to attend the rival school I was very confused and aggravated.

You are looking at a completely different scenario that does not align with the fundamental problem David is trying to discuss.  What happens off the field with players directly effects what is on the field.

He must be pretty good if you guys are hoping he loses a year of football for leaving.

I do not believe anyone has said they wanted the player to be ineligible for a year.  Actually, it is sad that the actions of a coach, when they are clearly breaking the rules and do not care about consequences, come to hurt the players more than anyone.  These coaches are not thinking about what is best for the players at all in fact.

Theoretically, he’s a very good, highly recruited young man. I wouldn’t wish any kid with his potential lose a chance to play, but also doesn’t seem fair for a coach to be reaching out to players before he even leaves the building. If there are rules to prevent this from happening, I’m just trying to find out if they have ever been enforced. And, yes, I feel kind of bad that I’m calling out a teenager. Not sorry for calling out a grown man coach.

I almost got kicked out of college for copying and pasting

Hypothetically speaking if the answer was yes, what is your opinion?

I’ve never been a fan of players jumping school to school. I miss the good old days where kids and families took pride in their school colors. I think we are getting away from the “Friday night lights” feel

I’m not arguing the rule if its written. But who are you to say what’s best for the kid and what’s not? I’m just curious to know if you guys simply want to see a rule enforced or if you’re still just salty about losing your head coach to Gulfport. Both are reasonable I’m just curious to know which one it is. Didn’t OS get some transfers in this past season? I guess it’s only fun when you’re the one benefiting from the patterns of a head coach.

I can not speak for everyone but, I can for my son.  Salty about losing our head coach, no, the players have more excitement for coach Bramlett, but agitated about the way he left and blatantly trying to take good players to ruin our program, yes.  It is rumored that the old DC was walking down the halls of the junior high school screaming "I am going to recruit everyone here".  I can not speak to what went on last year but, I can this year and it seems to me there is one reoccurring theme, the head coach.  Hypothetically speaking of course.

I can’t deny being salty about the coach walking out, especially with his comments in his first interview comparing the two programs. I do think there’s a big difference between getting some random transfers and a coach pulling players from the team he’s leaving. In fact, that’s why the rules are exactly against that. The coach is aware of the rules, and we have to assume that the player or his advisers are too. They don’t think anyone will challenge their actions, and that’s also sad.

The irony of Ocean Springs fans being upset that Pennock is recruiting their kids away from there when they literally have been doing the same thing over the past 3 years is comical to me.

Big difference with him recruiting both before and after walking out the door. Kids transfer all the time. But it’s against the rules for a coach to do what’s being done here. I’ve been aware of the transfer portal from Long Beach to Gulfport for years. That’s unfair, but legal.
