College Baseball Season Thread

That LSU vs Wake Forest game on Monday is very compelling. You kinda wish it was ace vs ace because Skenes and Lowder have probably been the two best arms in college baseball this year. But you might see that later in the week. Either way, it’s a matchup of the two teams that sat at number one in the polls all year.

Why do you think State hasn’t hired a pitching coach yet? Do you think it would have been an easier hire to make if there was a clean slate to work with?

Sounds like that’s coming very soon. Justin Parker from South Carolina was on campus yesterday and there are indications that he may be about to accept the job. Would be a very strong hire for State.

Parker to State is happening, per Steve Robertson.

This honestly surprises me a little, but evidently South Carolina was unwilling to get into a bidding war for him, and it’s not like State is throwing an absurd amount of money at him. SC does not invest heavily in baseball anymore like you would expect from a program with their history and Ray Tanner as AD.

SC had the 12th best ERA in the country (second best in the SEC) and were also second in the league in walks allowed. He was previously the pitching coach at Indiana, UCF, and Wright State, as well.

Looks to be about as good of a hire Lemonis could have made.  He's just going to have to literally hit the ground running and hopefully this turns out to be good hire when State pitchers toe the rubber next season.  We will see.

The way I see it, it’s a win-win situation for Parker. If it doesn’t work out immediately and the whole staff is fired, the new pitching coach won’t be blamed for it given what the last two years have been. If State has a big turnaround, Parker will be seen as having saved Lemonis’s job and likely becomes a viable head coaching candidate himself in the near future.

LSU loses a close game to Wake. LSU had their opportunities.
Tomorrow we may see the dam finally bust when Tennessee and LSU face off. It may take ten or more runs to win this game.

I actually like UT’s chances a lot in that one. LSU may be running out of pitching but Tennessee has a very good #3 starter and most of their bullpen is fresh.

Me too.  I’m expecting Tennessee to pull it off.

I also think TCU will outscore Oral Roberts.

Looks like a Wake Forest/UF final though and that should be a good one.

Would be the first time since 1999 that the finals are No. 1 vs. No. 2. And that was when they were still playing a one game championship, so this could be the first time ever you get 1 vs. 2 in a best of three.

I was completely wrong. Only took one run to win this game.

LSU is still kicking. They definitely have a chance now though it will be difficult. But possible.

WF seems pretty solid all the way around. I thought they may fold under pressure but they have not yet.

None of LSU’s players have been to Omaha either so experience wise, that is basically even.
Should be another good game tomorrow night.

Yeah kudos to LSU pitching, did not remotely see a shutout coming from them tonight. They still have an uphill climb but if they can make it back around to Skenes, they definitely have a great chance.

I’m intrigued by both of these semifinal matchups. Wake and Florida are in the driver’s seat in spite of hitting very poorly so far in Omaha. LSU and TCU have more work to do but have arguably played the best all around baseball in the tourney so far. I won’t be shocked if either of those matchups go to an “if necessary” game.

Thankfully this lasted less than 24 hours.  Glad he decided to remain in the fold because he's going to be a big part of this baseball team moving forward.

Yeah don’t totally know what the situation is there but he’s a potential first round talent you want on your team.

Does this count as Lemonis recruiting the portal well? Lol

The portal has turned the off-season into a circus.  I don’t fault the players for looking, and the coaches have to keep plucking from other teams to stay in contention.  However, it will be a roller coaster every year.

State and OM have picked up some big commitments the last few days, and it’s like the fans don’t want to even discuss it because you don’t know where they’ll sign or how long they’ll even be on campus if they do.   Lol.

College athletics is a completely different league now.

Best thing to do is ignore it all and show up at the first game of the season. Not worth the time to even worry about who is going where.

I know that is hard to do with Twitter and the prevailing social media that is in our face 24/7.

I can’t stand nfl preseason games. They mean absolutely nothing and I pay zero attention to them.

Now on the other hand I had a neighbor across the street from me when I was growing up who would take his airstream to Florida in Feb/Mar every year for spring training. He said that was the best baseball you would ever see. Much better than the regular season.

Why? Because guys were busting their butts to make the big league team.
