Vott, you won't get any arguments from me with these picks.  I know 5A had to be the toughest to pick.  My initial reaction at seeing Stone at the bottom of Region 4 was like, "This can't be right" but then when you start looking at the region at a whole it's an absolute gauntlet and then your picks made sense.  In other words there was no right or wrong there, but Stone must be losing a good bit.  That would be the only reason that pick would make sense there.  Great job with these.  I'll tip my cap to this for sure.

It was for sure the toughest to pick. All 6 of those teams made the playoffs last season. i pretty much went on past history with the first 3 picks. They have all had strong playoff runs before. Vancleave may be on the rise. We will see what Gautier does without Irving. Stone may or may have just caught lightning in a bottle last season. Then again they may have everyone back next season and win this region. In Region 3 5a, I think Florence-Natchez winner wins that region. I went with Florence just because I think Coach Davis is a really good coach and has them on the upswing. But natchez is probably the most athletic team in that region.

The regions are extremely lopsided.  I don't know if there's any team in Region 3 that could get out of the first round of the playoffs with a win.  In other words, the Region 3-5A district championship is a rather moot point.  It'll be something to be proud of for whichever team wins it, but it's going to have a shorter shelf life than an overripe tomato.

The stud WR from Gautier, Dillon Alfred has transferred to Saraland High School in Saraland, Alabama.

I’m not thrilled about no Hattiesburg or West Jones in our region anymore but maybe WC needs to be in purgatory for a little time. Add Hattiesburg as non region next season. This is the third year Coach Hankins has had with these kids. He has played most of them from freshman and they have took some lumps.  They will live or die by scorching ability. Defensive line is going to be nasty.

The table is set if we are going to ever do it.  Lot of cream puff on the menu.

I would like to see HHS play Wayne Co also. But with the schedules we both have for the next two years, I dont think it can happen. Both teams have open dates but at different points of the season. For it to work it would also have to take some cooperation of the other non region teams on both the HHS and Wayne Co schedule if it was possible.

But how far will being "pretty good" get them in the playoffs?  With the heavyweights in Region 4 they just don't have any wiggle room.

There is a possibility that the last place team in region 4 is better than the first place team in region 3

Florence will be pretty good they have a good coach and are drawing some good talent from JPS

I have been told that Florence has 500 plus people waiting on land, homes, apartments,  etc. They want out of Hinds County.

They have made a big jump athletics wise and I was told they were getting those transfers too. I get it Region 4 is the best Region by far but if there’s one team I give a shot in the first round it’s Florence. Not saying they will advance but they are well coached and have good athlete’s.

I see 4-5A as Laurel, Wayne County and then everyone else. I saw Gautier in the spring (my nephew plays for St. Martin - who will be AWFUL in their own right) and I just was not impressed with them at all. Losing their biggest difference maker in Alfred only further stunts them. They appeared to still be trying to run their Air Raid scheme with Kaden Irving's cousin and it just was not a good look in my opinion. He is not even in the same galaxy as Kaden when it comes to throwing the ball. He has a nice arm, but he is not as accurate at Kaden. Stone has a new head coach who comes from a mostly wing-T type of offense. I do not believe that fits the personnel Stone has coming back. I see them as a playoff team either way though. Vancleave has to replace their best players from last season. I think they will a tough and physical team with a chance to make playoffs. East Central is sort of in the same boat. They lose a good bit offensively and their best defensive players but they will be tough as nails as always. Laurel will be big, athletic and fast as always. Wayne County needs to fix their offense. The few times I got to see them, they just could not get the play when they need it. They had great athletes all over the field. Have to find a way to get them the ball. Defense should be pretty stout this year. If I had to pick today, I would say the region shakes out like this: - Disclaimer. Teams 3-6 could finish anywhere from 3-6 in my opinion. Will be a competitive division.

Laurel

Wayne County

Stone

East Central

Gautier

Vancleave

It may be another year or two but if they keep growing and well coached watch out.

The 8/24 game at Oak Grove looks like a tough one right out of the gate for Wayne County, but the rest of the tougher opponents they have, they get them at home.  From the eye test it looks like a favorable schedule for the War Eagles.  If they don't run the table in 4-5A, I'll be surprised.  Having Laurel at home will be huge for Wayne County.

Our new QB is going to get a helluva welcome to varsity football in the pine belt in about four fridays. OG coaches will be smart enough to put the game on him somehow but ultimately it will be on our defenses back.

From a winning point of view I’m glad Coach didn’t turn in Laurel as the finale. Why play them and then most likely again in a couple of weeks. Get a look at them against you and watch it the next several weeks with a rematch in mind.

Picayune ain't in a much better boat either Slick.  We've got Brandon at Brandon right out the gate.  Win or lose, I just want Picayune to play well and not get hurt.  A win would definitely make that drive home a whole lot easier, but Picayune is going to have to go up there and earn it.

I believe people will be surprised at the amount of YOUNG talent WC has. This is still a really young team but more experienced. The offense could be explosive depending on the style they choose to play. I think Defense will be the strength of the team although we lost our DC to administration. They moved the linebacker coach up to DC.

That sounds like a long term headache for opposition.  Young talent isn't a bad thing because it's perennial and it just keeps getting bigger and stronger each year.
