I would think that OS goes after another 6A coach. Maybe try to poach Drew Causey or the guy at Petal. Try to get someone with big school experience.

Petal? Hahaha. He's probably on thin ice right now. 2 seasons and 2 losing seasons since he got there.

Petal & PRC could start a new rivalry game and call it the Pillow Fight Bowl LOL!

I like that you laugh, but I’m afraid that with all of the success in Picayune, that’s the natural coaching tree to start any coaching search at a bigger school. One of the old assistants, Mitchell, who’s now at Germantown would be a good place to start, though I hate the poaching of coaches already engaged, like what happened to us. I know that some of the current assistants might be ready to upgrade, but that might require their new team switching to a more run oriented offense. I don’t know your guys, and certainly wouldn’t wish that on your kids, but wonder if moving from the top 5A to one of the top 6A programs is actually an improvement, outside of getting to move into a head coaching position. Again, I’m not asking you to comment on current guys or throw anybody under the bus. Just wondering in a generic train of thought about the old Dodd Lee family tree.

I would think the same about Oak Grove. They have a DC who comes from a very successful coaching family. You would think a school like OS would go after a guy like him that knows what it takes to win in 6A.

OS would have to pay what Gulfport paid Pennock or more for Mitchell to leave Germantown.

@RUNNINGMAN67 seems to think Causey is going to leave for OS. Their DC might go with him in that case.

Mitchell has to have some success to get a job like OS.  5-6 this year is not someone I would just hand the keys to. He did have success at OG but how much of the play calling did he actually do. I know Causey was involved a lot calling the offense.  I am just not sold on him yet.

He's not leaving OG. Even with their success the last three seasons, leaving OG for Oceans Springs is a step down. The top five coaching jobs in 7a in no order are Madison Central Brandon Tupelo Oak Grove and Starkville.

Russell was the offensive coordinator at Oak Grove, so he was heavily involved with the offense.  Heck if we didn't have him as our OC under Dodd Lee we don't beat Oxford for the 2013 state title.  Russell is a winner point blank.  Now in regards to his current situation, region 2-7A is going to be a monster, but since the omission of Murrah all he's got to do is be better than one team in that region to make the playoffs.  Knowing who Russell is though, just making the playoffs is the bare minimum expectation with the goal of winning state titles.  He definitely knows how to do it, but I wonder if he would have an easier path in the South to get there.

I don't doubt what you are saying.  Just saying if I am making the decisions at OS, I am hiring someone proven not on potential.  He hasn't won anything as the head guy.  Some guys are great assistants but that doesn't always translate to success as a head coach.  OS can't take that chance with this hire.

Completely understood there.

@David read my post above and see if that answers any questions or gives you any more questions.

It does answer most of my questions. I like that we’re all discussing who the best hire would be for my O.S. program, but the truth is that there’s no structure right now to do a coaching search. I still think that it’s important enough to bring in someone knowledgeable enough to know these coaches, and to evaluate the possibilities of hiring them or retaining one of the coordinators from O.S. last year. Thanks for your answer, even if it might mean that the Tide might have a guy who’s right for the job. That happens when you win!

So who exactly are you thinking about that's on our current staff?

They hired Pennock on potential.

He took a terrible Pass to the second round of the playoffs in his first year.  Pass had never won a playoff game in its history.  Also OS was not the program they are now.  Ross had almost run it in the ground.

I'm not disagreeing with that but you have to admit that at Pass for one year with the best class they've probably ever had in 4A that OS hired him on potential.

But now they are the premier south 7a school (apparently), going to be hard to get the community behind a guy that isn't a championship caliber HC.

To be the premier school in the South you need to make a title game first. So right now the top 2 now 7a schools in the South are Brandon and oak Grove
