All right, I can’t take it anymore. All I know is that my O.S. Greyhounds have been dogged for years about losing in the playoffs. Upgrade your schedule, they said. Expand your facilities. Hire a premier coach. Develop young players through a coordinated program through the lower grades. Build the support groups of boosters and athletic association for fund raising. Compete for state recognition. Win a playoff game. Win two. Raise expectations to do that every year. Well, we didn’t win the ring, but we damned sure gave it a pretty good two year run. I’m hoping that we can bring the rest of the Coast along with us, and we’d be proud to call Picayune part of the Coast if they’d have us. Having them on the schedule next year at least means that we’ll learn a little more about winning it all. I don’t know if Ocean Springs continues this run, but I’ve got a year where I don’t have to hear how much better the rest of the state is than us. Maybe Brandon & Starkville. Maybe. Y’all can dog the rest of the Coast if you want, but keep our names outta your mouths for at least a year. I’m out. (I’m getting pretty good at this trash talk, eh? Learning from the best)

You left out “recruit other top players from schools along the coast”. LOL. Greyhounds had a great run! Proud of them. I have lived in Ocean Springs for the last 12 years. What Pennock has done is truly incredible for this community and school. I am not a greyhound by heart but I respect what they have accomplished. I think they take a step back next year as far as their overall dominance, but I still expect them to win the region 4-7A title.

I cannot deny that certain parents  have chosen to move into the district to allow their promising players to get the advantages that I listed above. Thing is, that’s what has been happening all over the state at premier schools. Oak Grove certainly comes to mind, and they shouldn’t be ashamed. I do agree that there will be a drop off when we lose Mr. Football, but I’d love to be the kind of program Picayune is, where they reload and continue on with the winning. Of, course you realize that at least some of my post was in jest brought on by missing my football. But, if it stirs up some thoughts, I’m good with it. It’s been too long since O.S. has been able to brag.

I’m not sure what you mean when you say, “We’d be proud to call Picayune part of the Coast if they’d have us.”  We’ll be in 4-6A which is the coastal region, so do you want Picayune to adopt Ocean Springs or something like that?  To be honest I’m looking forward to our matchup with Ocean Springs next season.  It should be a great game for both teams.

I definitely picked up on some of your post being in jest. As was mine with “recruiting”. I have a nephew who is currently playing on the team and my youngest daughter  is currently a junior there so I get to hear a lot of the things other schools and all say and all the noise they talk about Ocean Springs. It will be interesting to see how it plays out next year for both Picayune and Ocean Springs. I expect both to be region champions with Picayune favored to make a run for another Gold Ball.

Your last sentence there is certainly a bold statement.  I certainly hope we can make some noise, but I certainly don’t want to predict anything like that at this point.  We’ve got a lot of work to do to even get in that position.

It’s more about some folks saying that the Yune isn’t a Coast school, even though they play a schedule heavy on teams from here. I was thinking that maybe big brother O.S. adopts some of the things that Picayune has been doing lately to become a statewide power. Playing each other will start that process, even if it’s only the one year that I’ve been hearing. Can’t understand why it would be a single game contract, but I’ll take it.

Hold on now I see the big brother comment there LOL!  I think that might be wishful thinking on your part.  Picayune hasn’t played Ocean Springs a whole lot and this certainly isn’t anything to brag or boast about, but Picayune is 12-10 all time against Ocean Springs.  I think it will be a tough game next year for sure and a welcomed challenge.

Is that all? I’ve watched Picayune kick our butts seems like every time. The one playoff game, probably 25 years ago, where a wreck on the interstate kept anybody from O.S. from the kickoff is famous. Me and some buddies had an ice chest in the back seat, and sat on I10 listening on the radio. It was about 40-0 when we arrived at halftime, and we just turned around and headed home. “Big brother” only referred to school size and classification. There’s no comparison in on the field success. Again, most of this is tongue in cheek to counter the historic views of the Coast and it’s football legacy. A win by O.S. next year would be a feather in our cap, and another sign that the program is improved.

You’re talking about the Fall ‘03 game.  That was a great Picayune team that year, it’s just that Oak Grove was the thorn in the flesh for us that year.  Magee  #7 was a great tailback for us back then.

You guys lost some great players sure, but you return a good amount back from a really, really good defense. You have two good offensive backs coming back. George County and Pascagoula are probably the only teams that would pose a threat in your region (if you can really consider either of them that) and then you have Hattiesburg and West Jones from 3-6A that would be considered a threat. To me, you guys and West Jones are probably the favorites to come out of the south. Hattiesburg is probably the wild card in that situation as well depending on what they return and all.

I remember the 2002 matchups of GC and Picayune. Two times that year. Great games.

So does Hancock lose a bunch from their playoff team this year?

I actually think the majority of their team was juniors. I only assume that because a few years ago we played them in 9th grade and they were really good. That group should be seniors this year.

If that's the case we definitely need to be on the lookout for them.  They could potentially make some noise.

They return a pretty good amount I believe but from what I saw of them last year, I was not very impressed overall. Definitely a hard nosed, gritty group of kids that are going to play hard. They are in the same mold of a Vancleave or East Central. They will struggle to match athletically but will play their tails off.

If I'm understanding this correctly you view them as a better team than West Harrison & Long Beach.  Is that correct?

Absolutely better than Long beach (although that is a low bar). I would say they are better than West Harrison as well although they appear to be making strides to becoming more competitive.

HHS may take a step back on defense, but they return pretty much the entire offense.  The entire O-line returns. And the RB we lost the first game of the yr is returning next season.

Well that's good then.  Hopefully the Tigers can build off of what happened this season and get deeper in the playoffs.

You know I watched the second half of y’all and Brandon then Brandon against Starkville.

They got lucky against you guys. I honestly think OS was still a little hung over from Oak Grove.  It’s happened to us before. It’s hard to generate that focus two weeks in a row. Sometimes the playoffs are the luck of the dam draw. Contrary to popular belief I don’t think y’all fall off that much next season.

Ocean Springs would have matched up much better against Starkville. They could have scored with them. That crap Brandon trotted out there thinking they could old man football their way past Starkville was a failure. Knowing you were going to have to score points against a dynamic team and not being able to do it ? I’m going to make a prediction here. Brandon coach will never win a gold ball. Maybe down in 2A or something where he only has to have a good defense.
