Yeah Picayune dictated that game. WP may start a slide now. Who knows. I think the South will win it next year too.
-
Laurel and Picayune were the best two teams in 5A IMO. Saw them both. Both scored 59 on us. Really thought Laurel would've represented the south but Picayune fought back and they proved that Saturday night. Congrats on a great season. I look forward to the matchup next year.

That’s a hilarious assumption on Picayune’s part because they think they can do that to anybody. Laurel is as physical of any Hs team I’ve seen this year.
-
I understand. The last 4 opponents for Picayune were Long Beach, Gautier, Hattiesburg, and Brookhaven. Long Beach is bad. Gautier is one dimensional, Hattiesburg had no QB (I wasn’t there but saw clips) and it looked like they ran a different offense than usual because of that? Brookhaven cannot throw. Their QB is an athlete but looks like he’s trying to throw a 10lb shot when he throws. GC was best offense Picayune played other than maybe a Gulfport and I’d say they’re better than Gulfport. GC QB went down on first drive and freshman QB came off the bench and led 5 TD drives. The defense is there to be exploited by someone who knows how. Laurel is very balanced they’re better at running the ball IMO but they can throw and they have some dudes to throw to. It will be close but unless Laurel craps the bed in this one I think they win.

That’s perfectly fine to disagree. Doesn’t mean it’s accurate.

Picayune defense is not their strong suit. They’re not bad but they’re far from a shut down defense. Laurel is big and physical and athletic. They have really good DL and LBs and we all know it don’t matter DB wise when playing Picayune. Picayune’s best defense is their offense. If Laurel plays like they have been the n Picayune will have trouble stopping them. For all the times that Picayune has been declared physical, I’d say Laurel is just as physical if not more unless they absolutely peaked against GC and played their best that night. The type off offense Laurel has can present plenty of problems for Picayune’s defense while Laurel literally only has to focus on stopping the run. Laurel plays in the Rock the first Saturday of December.

Laurel at West Jones 5A South quarterfinals

I just know that if Laurel plays like they did last Friday, they're gonna be really hard to beat for anyone. I'll say Laurel 35-24. -
Laurel at West Jones 5A South quarterfinals

Ok I got you. I thought so a week ago but then when you read the rules it's confusing as crap. I was assuming IF GC and Gautier had won then GC would've traveled to Gautier because they wouldn't have had a home game. Obviously didn't work out that way. In that case I thought Laurel hosted but that makes sense. -
Laurel at West Jones 5A South quarterfinals

Pretty sure this one is in Laurel. -
Should be a good game. Picayune defense isn't great. It's not bad but it isn't great. I personally think Picayune wins a close one and advances to play Laurel for SS.
-
And I’d agree with that which is why WJ should win. Heck, they may win 72-0 and make my whole post sound ridiculous. Who knows?
-
Look, I’m not saying Gautier will win this game but I find it highly hilarious that most on this entire page give Gautier no chance. I’d lay odds that they have the best QB in the 5A south playoffs. Again, WJ will probably win but you’re fooling yourself if you think Gautier can’t make plays. I mean, I get it, the Gods of football reside in region 3 and region 4 is just the peasant servants that lay at their feet. BUT as mediocre as WJ has been toward the end, and it’s been mentioned on here by region 3 diehards, it’s not out of the realm for Gautier to be able to break through the impenetrable WJ defense for a few plays. Again, the kid is good. Again, WJ should win. But I just don’t think Gautier is given enough credit on here. It’s really the defense for Gautier that’s suspect.

All State Playoff tickets are only available through GoFan. MHSAA has ruled that.

Region 4-5A 1. Picayune 2. George County 3. ? 4. ? If Picayune wins and Vancleave wins there's a three way tie between Gautier, EC, and Vancleave. Gautier beat Vancleave. EC beat Gautier. Vancleave beat EC (in this scenario). If Picayune beats Gautier and EC beats Vancleave then EC is the 3 seed and Gautier is the 4 seed (i'm fairly certain). I also think that if Gautier WINS and EC wins that it's still EC 3 and Gautier 4. No matter the outcomes though Picayune and GC are locked in their spots.
-
Still trying to figure out how Hattiesburg/Laurel is gonna be able to play on a Saturday at the end of regular season when everyone was mandated to play on Thursday. That screws both regions over on who they may play.
-
Yeah he is special. Could tell it took a bit to kind of get the QB in rhythm and unfortunately that caused a few stalls on offense and picayune used that to their advantage and at that point GC got in catch up mode and probably threw it more with a young QB than they wanted.
-
Yeah obviously was gonna be tough to stop Dowdell. He played possessed. Really thought GC could match score for score but game plan obviously changed when the starting QB goes down on first series. Unfortunate but I thought the guys played through it. Had a few freshman on the field including the QB. Future is bright. Picayune has a great team and seems, to me, to have played their best game all season.
-
Yeah I’m not sure what the diagnosis will be on that. Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.
-
Picayune played well. Hats off to them.
-
Yeah it’s a bummer. He may be done. I’m sure he’ll get it checked out next week. Our freshman is talented though. We’ve been excited about him. Obviously a tough situation for him to come in but he put up 33 points on Picayune. Played well for the circumstances. The balloon kind of deflated for the guys when the QB went out though. Tough deal.

Picayune 5-0 GC 4-1 EC 4-1 Gautier 3-2 Vancleave 2-3 West Harrison 1-4 PRC 1-4 LB 0-5 GC plays EC next week for No. 2 spot. GC QB went down On first series of the game. Took a shot to the knee and didn’t return. Freshman came in and played well but it was a tough task in game like that.
-
Good game Picayune. GC QB went down on first series. Took a shot to the knee. Freshman QB came and played well in his place. Picayune RB is a great player.
-
I can agree. I guess my point was that GC and Picayune has comparable depth but they use it differently. GC tends to try utilize them all at once while Picayune will roll out their most important skill position one at a time. Should be a great game.
-
Lol exactly my point. Everyone knows Picayune uses multiple RBs. When the argument of "more depth" at skill spots starts it's just weird to have that argument when these two teams are totally different offensively. Realistically, they have the same amount of depth but Picayune uses them in different ways. GC can roll out 5 WRs on any given play and Picayune will roll out 1-2 depending on formation. Basically, one team uses their depth at one spot (for the most part) while the other teams tries to get multiple good skill guys on the field at one time.
-
Sooooo.... They have multiple RBs???
