That's funny since last year it wasn't announced until 8-18-25 and the new announcement was on the 17th of this year. No one really expects anything different at this point when dealing with the good old boy system of MHSAA.
-
I'm not sure if this game necessarily favored Picayune last year either. Picayune generally plays better when they aren't favored or when they aren't projected to win. If the masses project Gulfport as the favorite, then I personally like the position Picayune is in. Also, last year's win against Gulfport wasn't a fluke either. Our kicker made a difference in that game and he's back. I'm just glad we sent out Milner Stadium last year with a win. Don't know if we'll ever get a chance to play there again.

Varsity Voices 2026 MHSAA Football Season Preview (7A-1A Complete Breakdown)
Vott replied to TheRadioGuy's topic in Football
That was a fantastic broadcast for 7a-5a. I havent watched part 2 yet. But you can tell those guys really did some research. -
The guys at Varsity Voices (State Championships Radio Network) dropped their complete 2026 MHSAA football season preview across two episodes. Part 1 (7A, 6A & 5A + All-State/Key Players List): They kick things off with the big schools, breaking down 73 teams across 12 regions. They also reveal their All-State player roster. Part 2 (4A, 3A, 2A & 1A): The second episode wraps up the state covering all 154 small-school programs across 32 regions. Loads of parity here, with three of the four state title games in these classes decided by six points or less last year. Good breakdown if you’re looking to get caught up on every classification before kickoff.

The name M.M. Roberts Stadium is officially no more as of tomorrow….. USM’s stadium will be known as Renasant Stadium moving forward (or at least until that sponsorship deal ends). Do we still call it the Rock? Or do we have to come up with a bank related nickname now?
-
Gridiron reads they brought back 15 starters apparently.
-
I thought Gulfport lost a lot from last year's team? This game should favor Picayune again
-
I was told the 1st probation ended the day before.
-
The only way to stop the illegal practicing is to enforce a playoff ban then it would stop. They would definitely know and understand the rules. Or fine the head coach personally.
-
Think Gulfport will be pretty tough this season. They’re talented at wr and on the DL. Does anyone know where the Marks kid from Picayune came from? Is this his 1st year playing? His recruiting blew up out of nowhere.
-
The cupboard is definitely not half empty at all. But to hear Coach Stogner on WXXV 25 teams in 25 days preview he was trying to act as if Picayune was kind of going to be rebuilding this season. Everyone knows Picayune reloads and not rebuilds.
-
I do not think the cupboard is half empty for either team, but at this early stage of the season, it is going to take a few games to get into form. To me, Picayune probably has the upper hand offensively with their horses back and some of the OL while Gulfport is having to replace a really, really good Quarterback and Running back. Defensively, Gulfport returns a great bit of talent while Picayune will be breaking in some new guys. Like you said, most of the time they both just reload. Letter X will definitely be key for Picayune to have success.
-
Also, whatever roster turnover there may be for either team in this game, I don't think it will play as big of a factor as it may seem. Both of these teams generally reload which is a good thing. Picayune also isn't playing this game with a half-empty cupboard either. This game feels like it may boil down to an X-factor and if that X-factor can be successful. Pay attention to the letter X LOL.

We get Jackson Academy at home the following week. I'm not as concerned with the wins and losses thing as long as Picayune gets better because these are the type of games teams should schedule if they want to do well in the postseason. Remember it's just 11 vs 11 for 48 minutes, and if you get lucky you might get some free extra football. I'm not opposed to that either LOL.

Man. What a game this will be! Honestly sort of sad I will not be able to make this one due to going to see my nephew kick his season off at Pass. I believe Gulfport will win this one. Picayune graduated a pretty good bit of defensive production and some really good linemen on offense. I think Gulfport just has too many horses right now and has a ton of confidence riding into this game. I think Picayune's style of play will make this a great game as always and I would not be shocked if Picayune wins it. However, I see Gulfport winning in a 35-28 type of game where it is a battle for 4 quarters. Both teams are testing themselves early which is a good thing.
-
This annual heavyweight bout kicks off next Friday. Picayune managed to win this game last year and Gulfport managed to win the 7A State Title. This early in the season a game like this could go either way. Share your thoughts on this one.

I will be pretty surprised if stringer doesn’t win their region
-
I agree with Taylorsville being the preseason favorite, but by a very thin margin. They graduated a huge senior class including pretty much the entirety of their defense and offensive line. I think Stringer is capable of winning that game this year especially with them hosting. Look for that to be a competitive matchup to essentially decide who gets to host Simmons in the 3rd round. After them, you are correct about the drop off. Lumberton has a really talented QB, but they graduated a large senior class as well and will be trying to build anything they can around him.

I don't know who Puckett is playing but tge home fame on the 28th has been moved to Brandon vs Sebastopol. No junior high or Jr games at home until after September 15th.
-
Clarkdale may be moving up in 3A come 2027. They may have a little more talent. Stringer probably has a little more talent than Enterprise as well.
-
Taylorsville is the favorite in region. That region may be very weak below them and Stringer.
