pancho
regardless of who is hired, they must regain some semblance of a recruiting platform. The Berg is a nice enough place but the other sunbelt schools have more attractive football programs.
Bulldogs4
I don’t like firing Coaches in the middle of the season. But it seems to be the in vogue thing to do these days. Hall is a good coach but he was in an impossible situation. USM is in a tough position and I am not sure they are ever going to get back to 1976-2011. They hit the peak in 2011 and the last thirteen years have been a struggle. We will see how things go going forward. rebmus
I agree B4. While the Hall experiment didn't work out at USM, I wouldn't write Hall off as a potential good hire somewhere. USM is just a next to an impossible job now with NIL money flowing.
NoWammies
OU fired their OC today. I fully expect them to put up 45 in Oxford Saturday now.

pancho
they'll ax venables at seasons end if they don't show improvement. too much buyers remorse thinking they would have had the big 12 all to themselves had they just stayed put

Dawg83
My gut says USM ends up having to turn to an alum of some kind for their job. Not a sexy hire but someone who can maybe get fans and boosters interested. Pat Surtain Sr. has already been mentioned as a possibility. Also wouldn’t rule out Derrick Nix. I think the dream scenario would be Kane Wommack, but that may require Bama wanting him gone as DC first.

We will see how things go going forward. I have to disagree to an extent here. They have had a top 2-3 recruiting class in their conference the last few seasons. There is zero excuse for how bad they have been this year. His claim to fame was being a QB whisperer who could develop talent and I saw none of that over 4 years. Revolving door at quarterback. Offensive line play did not improve at all (even after getting some transfers and a new coach). Sure, they do not have a ton of money but you mean to tell me that a program like UL-Monroe can find a way to get it going but USM cannot? I believe Hall is a good guy, but I was not overly impressed with him as a coach. There is good reason why many Tulane fans were not sad when he left us. He did not inherit some dumpster fire of a program. They were coming off 3 bowl games in 5 seasons and a winning record 4 of the previous 5. I know a lot of folks have a soft spot for him because he is a Mississippi boy, but at the end of the day, he did not get it done at any level for the program. The whole reason he left USA was to be more marketable for P5 programs as a DC at Alabama (obviously may not work out) but I doubt he would go. Surtain would be one to keep an eye on. Derrick Nix would be a good hire. A guy I heard some people mention was Marcus Woodson at Arkansas. Has been looking for a HFC opportunity. Outstanding recruiter. Been in the SEC and ACC. He is a Moss Point native so it would be coming home of sorts for him. There are some quality candidates out there for sure.

He is still well connected in Mississippi, has a four star DL from Hattiesburg committed to him at Arkansas right now.
