Standings at the top of Region 3 5A heading into the final week

1) Hattiesburg Region champs Host Laurel next week

2) Wayne County 4-1 in Region at West Jones next week

3) Laurel 3-2 in Region at Hattiesburg next week. Could be a Must win for Laurel because Florence holds the head to head advantage.

4) West Jones 3-2 in Region host rival Wayne County next week. This is an unfamiliar position for WJ.

( A Florence win against Natchez with a Laurel loss at Hattiesburg puts Florence in as the #4 seed.)

a lot at stake playoff wise for everyone besides Hattiesburg who’s clinched the #1 seed.

So if Laurel loses Little Brown Jug and Florence wins, the Naders are out?

Yep. And since the brown Jug game is next Saturday, Laurel will already know if they have to win or not to get in since Florence plays Thursday

Just use that as motivation Deonte.  It’s amazing what difference a year can make .

If Hattiesburg loses so be it. But they haven't forgot. I just don't want anyone to get it twisted. These are the same two team from last year. But there is one big difference. I think we all know what that is.

You’re absolutely correct Deonte and yes there is one big obvious difference for sure.

West jones will hear beat by Wayne county then go on road to end season getting beat by whoever is number 2 from other district.

WJ starting Rb hurt vs laurel with season ending injury.

WJ top WR hurt vs Laurel early did not play vs Hattiesburg, might be back next week.

There was a starting LB that left hurt with what looked like a broke arm. No updates on him.  Update:  Broken wrist.

Starting  QB hurt early vs Hattiesburg did not re-enter game.  WJ offense was worthless once he was out. Just found out he has broken collarbone so he’s done.

It’s not quite that simple lol.

#1 Hattiesburg- that’s set in stone

After that it gets murky if Wayne county beats west jones and Hattiesburg beats laurel then it forces a 3 way tie for 3rd and 4th and with the tie breakers. Laurel would finish 3rd and West 4th in that scenario and Florence would be out bc of point differential and a head to head loss to west..

Laurel lost Florence by 1.. Beat west by 7.. so their point differential is 6

West lost by 7 to laurel.. beat Florence badly but it only counts as 12 points.. so their point differential is at 5..

Florence lost badly to west so that’s 12.. and beat laurel by 1.. so their point differential is -11…

Laurel gets 3rd..

West 4th

Merlin i hate hearing about all the injuries. been there done that. it sicks. i hope they heal well.

QB is a senior. LB I think is a senior but I may be wrong.  The RB is a sophmore.  The WR is 8th grader.  We also have 3 o line banged up but should be playing as well as a corner and safety.  We will likely have a jr corner moving to QB, or throw in the 9th grader that moved up a couple weeks ago.  Our number 2 QB pre-season was hurt and out for the year in mop up duty I think during South Jones game.

I have never seen WJ have this many injured all at once.  And to all of the skill positions at that.

I am counting on Hattiesburg beating Laurel.  Although Laurel has the ability to beat Hattiesburg, they have played all of 1 good game all year and that was against West (while still barely winning mostly due to West injuries).  Laurel to be honest just doesn't seem well coached right now.  So I don't think they could beat a fired up Hattiesburg (who I really don't think is all that good either and wont make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs).  West will get beat by Wayne County.

Regardless.  WJ will not win another game regardless of who they play at this point.

I will go a step farther.  District 3 at this point will not get a team into the South State.

Laurel, if they manage to suddenly put things together, has the overall talent to make a run to get there.  But only if they finished 3rd in the division and could avoid Picayune till South State.  Hattiesburg offense just isn't good enough in my mind.  Wayne County is............just weird and I can't trust them.  WJ is way too injured.

And I absolutely LOATHE Laurel.  So I don't even want to see them in the playoffs.  The only consolation for me this for this season at this point is hoping they do not make the playoffs.

What you are feeling with injuries is what Hattiesburg was feeling last year and at the beginning of this season. I would comment further but I learned a few years ago when Hattiesburg played Pascagoula to not put to much information on this board becuase it was taken and ran with by one of their coaches and used to their advantage.

I haven’t seen Hattiesburg throw the ball like that in I can’t remember when. Snoop Connor didn’t have hat kind of execution West shut down their run but looked completely lost on passes. The right side they were picking on would freeze and the receiver would go right by him. So obviously Vance has been sandbagging that passing game. Hattiesburg QB is tough because he got absolutely blasted last night.

West could do nothing on offense after the QB went out. They couldn’t run three plays without fumbling the snap. Much less try a pass and Vance knew that.

Hattiesburg fumbled a few times and the ball bounced right to another Tiger. Their PR kicked a fumble accidentally and it went ten yards through a group of players right to a Hattiesburg player on the ground. The bounces were the same way when we played them. That kind of stuff turns eventually. It always does.. Lot of football left to be played. .

Laurel has the tools to put up a lot of points but their defense just runs around lost most of the time. After putting up a lot of points on West and us it will be telling if Hattiesburg can hold that point total down.

Trying to figure out who will be the fourth seed is just to deep for my simple mind.

I knew HHS defense was going to be the strength of their team this season, but they have gone above and beyond since region play started. I believe only Florence has gotten more than 200yds total offense on HHS in region games.

Laurel lined up and run the ball behind that huge offensive line last night. The difference is Hattiesburg’s front can match their size. I was told last night that the kid that has been starting at QB is out for the season the played #2 against us. They went up 29-15 early in the third and our kids got stops and kept their defense on the field and you could see it wearing them down.
Now we are a different team on the road so we need to put together our best road game. You and I know that we’ve took some very good teams to WJ and come up short. We need a win to ensure a home game in the playoffs.

Man I’m on the fence about going Thursday. I went to SoSo last night to try and break our jinx with Laurel. It looks like it worked. Now Merlin is mad with me because he said I brought the jinx to the Mustangs with all the injuries  If I go and we lose I’ll be on the opposite side of the state the rest of the way.

Maroon, you may or may not like this. Even with a loss to HHS this week, Laurel can still make the playoffs. First Florence has to beat Natchez. Wayne co has to beat West Jones. That would create a 3 way tie between WJ Laurel and Florence with 4-3 region records. WJ beat Florence by 12 but lost to Laurel by 7 so they are at a +5. Laurel beat WJ by 7 but lost to Florence by 1 so they are at +6. Florence lost to WJ by 12 but beat Laurel by 1. That makes Florence at -11. Since 12 is the most points you can win by on a tiebreaker, I believe it is going to take HHS winning by 12 or more for Florence to get in.  So if Laurel gets in, it looks like they will play Picayune in 1st round.

So we need Hattiesburg to beat Laurel by more than 12 points.  Consider it done.

I could be wrong but in another scenerio, if West Jones beats Wayne Co, they will both be 5-2 in region play. West should be the 2 seed and Wayne the 3 based on the tiebreaker of west winning. So if HHS and Florence both win that will leave Laurel and Florence at 4-3 then only the head to head tiebreaker comes into play and Florence is in.  If WC WJ and Laurel all finish 5-2 that tiebreaker will be determined on the WJ-WC score on Thursday.
