Underachieving programs

One caveat to the 2020 playoff run: Pascagoula avoided Wayne County because of a COVID forfeit and losing that game -- which was likely -- would have eliminated them from playoff contention.

Pascagoula has had ONE season above .500 since the start of 2016.  So it's not as though they've been beating up on 5A opponents and the 2016 team which was loaded with senior starters and two good running backs limped to a 6-6 finish in 5A.

As for coast 6A, other than OS (and to some degree Gulfport), it's still a bunch of underachieving programs led by incompetent coaching staffs -- none of which have far superior talent than Pascagoula.  The fact Pascagoula is getting whipped by them is even more of an indictment of those steering the ship.

I understand what you are saying.

I am not sure why 2016 is your reference point, but my point remains that while in 5A, Pascagoula was competitive (not they beat up on anyone) and in 6A they are not. Is there a reason for that? Why is that the case? It just seems odd to me. As for Coast 6A, Gulfport and d'Iberville have been FAR more consistent that Ocean Springs. I know the Hounds have looked great for the past 2 seasons, but they were nowhere near this level of good going back the past 8-10 seasons.

OS is the new daddy on the coast and maybe for years to come as long as the coaching is adequate.  The demographics are shifting and they're fielding speed on defense now which wasn't the case in the past.  And they're feeder programs are loaded (my nephew plays for the 7th grade team) which doesn't always translate to high school success but it's nothing to dismiss either.

2016 is a reference point because Pascagoula was playing in 5A and struggled despite having a senior stocked roster and starting 22.  They struggle more in 6A because their talent won't overwhelm anyone in that classification, especially along the lines of scrimmage -- unlike in 5A in which the likes of West Harrison, PRC, and Long Beach are served up for easy meals.

maybe i should say teams north of jackson or south of jackson

because the regions dont really line up

in the north you only have tupelo, southaven and south panola, the other 6 teams in region 1 are bad

the way the regions are set up, you dont always get the best two teams in the state championships

I actually knew exactly what you meant. Region 1-6A is significantly weaker than region 2. Just like region 4 is significantly weaker than region 3.

I think Ocean Springs long term success will be determined by two things:

1. Who they hire to be AD when Hubbard steps down at Christmas (which is what I hear is coming). Will that new guy let things be business as usual?

2. How long is Pennock going to stay?

Ocean Springs has done a fine job developing and getting kids to move into the area. 8th grade team was pretty bad this year, but I know the 9th grade team is really good so they should be good for a few years. As an Ocean Springs resident (not a fan lol), there is a lot of good things that draw families here. Now that athletics has taken off some, I am sure the population will only continue to grow.

I get your point. It is valid. I just did not understand why you kept saying 2016. I think Sims has 1 year left to get the ship right or he is gone, whether it be retirement or "retirement".

I appreciate your knowledgeable perspective on coast football.

I believe you're correct on the info about Hubbard.  Moreover, I think the culture has changed at OS given how they ushered Ross out the door and went looking for greener pastures.  Pennock, I have no read on and he's pretty aloof from what I hear but they'll attract another good coach if he bolts.

Appreciate the sentiment! Growing up in Gulfport during the late 70's through the 80's and attending Gulfport High in the early 90's, I have a deep appreciation for coast football and have tremendous respect for programs like Moss Point, Pascagoula Hattiesburg, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, etc .

To have a successful program now days you must have the combination of a growing thriving community both black & white, that takes an interest in the program financially. And you need either a good pool of athletes or be an attractive city the families of good athletes want to move to for more opportunities. Think Madison, Brandon, Ocean Springs, Oak Grove, Tupelo, Oxford. Older areas that are not growing have football teams that struggling. Think Hattiesburg, Meridian, Vicksburg, Natchez, Moss Pt.

Can I jump on this Ocean Springs/Goula/Coast football discussion! First off, I’ve heard the talk of Hubbard retiring when Bray graduates, along with his siblings being gone, and I’m also pretty sure it happens. He’s set up the athletic department very well, with the new stadium home side, baseball field improvements, and a multimillion dollar field house announced for the stadium. O.S. is yearly at the top of the award for best all around program which gives points for finishes in every sport. Cross country, tennis, and soccer are consistent state champs. That AD position could draw some big names.

Pennick also has built the football program very well in his three short years. He talks about not only improving the weight program, but also nutrition and home support as he works with the middle school teams. 9th grade and 7th are both loaded with athletes and undefeated. This year’s linemen are noticeably bigger and more conditioned than in the past.  He comes from the Jackson area and could get a offer from one of those schools that he would have to consider. I will say that in his career, he’s coached Mr. Football Cam Akers & Bray Hubbard. Kind of easy to coach, and Pennick acknowledges that.

Us Greyhound fans have to hope that we can break through in the playoffs, getting past the second round, where we lost to a good Oak Grove last year. I do think that region 3 is down a little this year, but whoever we face, and Gulfport too for that matter, will be stout. I’d like nothing more than the Coast to one year win a few playoff games and shut up those Pine Belt guys. But talking won’t get it done. Gotta improve the schedule, playing more big games early, and hoping that this reclassification opens up some changes. Thanks, guys. Good talk.
