Underachieving programs

I'll start with Pascagoula.

29-48 since the start of the 2016 season.  Unacceptable yet tolerated by an apathetic community/administration.

Most years the roster has multiple players who play a minimum of JUCO ball.  This year's version has at least two players on defense who will play at the FBS level and maybe more depending on their JUCO careers.  And the starting RB just committed to MGCCC.

Germantown for sure

Wait a minute there.  The title of this thread says underachieving programs as in the current state of things, not what has or hasn’t happened in the past.  Germantown is and will be just fine.  Even though they lost to Madison Central Friday night, Russell has that program probably a little bit ahead of schedule.  They will be much better next year I can assure you.

I get that but he literally said "29-48 since the start of the 2016 season" so I was just referring to them in general over the years but I still would've expected them to be at least one of the better programs in the state by now especially with some of the talent they've produced, they just always seem to be on the outside looking in comes post season.

I understand where you are coming from, but they are in the process of fixing that problem and things will get better there.  They host Starkville Friday with a legitimate shot at beating them.  I know they’ll have an extremely tall task next week when they travel to Tupelo and I don’t expect them to win that ballgame, but if they finish 4-3 in district play, they probably get in the playoffs.

Throw Clinton in there. Take away the records from the Cam Akers years and Boswell is barely above .500. Too much talent over there.

Thats true to a certain extent and no lie 2020 was our last solid run but if that's case you can throw a few other teams in there as well like pearl, starkville, etc

No doubt about that! Goula on a regular basis dresses out more talent than almost anybody. I know that playing up in 6A hurts, but they have been disappointing for the past five years. When I saw them play Ocean Springs, before the game they were impressive with their size, strength, and the resumes of several of their players. But, they got barely one first down with the simple offense, and seemed out of shape on defense. I don’t know that coaching situation, and hate to get into why a school might change that situation, but across town, Gautier is well coached and playing exciting ball….

That was maybe the most embarrassing performance of this tenure.  I asked someone in the first quarter if we were conceding the game and trying to shorten it by running middle school plays from the 'I' formation.

I have been able to watch Pascagoula games quite a bit this year (thanks to the WGUD stream they post on youtube) and in my opinion outside of the Ocean Springs game, their scheme appears pretty good. Pascagoula has been very inconsistent with their effort and execution which signals to me, a culture issue. It comes off as if players are not buying what Sims is selling. Four of the last six seasons, Pascagoula has been 6A and struggled. The other two, they were competitive and competed in what was a fairly tough region and was even a possession away from playing for a state championship in 2020. It seems like there is a disconnect playing 6A competition compared to 5A? Is it that big of a difference for them? Pascagoula is 8 for 8 in making the playoffs in 5A under Sims and 0 for 4 in 6A. Sims from all accounts is a great man and a good leader, but something seems off in Pascagoula. Sims probably has one more season to right the ship or he may be retiring sooner than later.

One thing about Germantown is their consistent growth since opening. I believe they were initially 4A, then 5A, now 6A, soon to be 7A in a relatively short period. That will be 4 different classifications in just 12 years next season. I expect them to be a solid program in the coming years. They have the resources. Entering this season they were 73-53-1 since opening. They really only struggled making the jump to 6A.

i watch about 5 games every friday night (6a)

and its an embarrassment how bad the north teams are versus the south

the north needs new coaching blood

Other than Brandon, I'm not overly impressed with anyone in the south and they are beatable. The coast is overrated every year and never makes it to the championship. We always hear how great the south is yet 10 of the 13 6A champions have come from the North since 6A was created. I'll believe the South is good when they start winning games that actually matter.

Again, I hate to dog a coach, but anybody losing consistently with that talent level has to be questioned on how he’s getting them game ready. Dropping down to a lower classification next year will give Goula a better chance to compete, and they will have more non region games to schedule, either playing up in class or , more likely playing down to give young players a chance to improve. Whether Sims is the best guy to lead this situation is not for me to say.

Also would like to add Biloxi to this list as well. I know they are having a decent year this season, but for a school their size, they should be winning on a more frequent basis.

Add in the funds available for some of the best facilities anywhere in the state. I do like the fact that they hired a young, enthusiastic coach instead of the string of old timers in the past. This year’s team is good and the program is trending up. Not sure if that means they can compete with the big dogs on all sides of their borders, but I like their improvements.

That’s bold of you. Madison Central hadn’t been to the state championship let alone won one in two decades before last season.

I'm not talking about MC. I didn't even mention us. Union said the north is bad, how its "embarrassing", and saying they need new coaches. I'm saying 10 out of 13 championships were won by the North. I'm also saying the South hype rarely matches the outcome each year. A Region 4 team has NEVER won 6A yet we hear how amazing they are every single year.

One caveat to the 2020 playoff run: Pascagoula avoided Wayne County because of a COVID forfeit and losing that game -- which was likely -- would have eliminated them from playoff contention.

Pascagoula has had ONE season above .500 since the start of 2016.  So it's not as though they've been beating up on 5A opponents and the 2016 team which was loaded with senior starters and two good running backs limped to a 6-6 finish in 5A.

As for coast 6A, other than OS (and to some degree Gulfport), it's still a bunch of underachieving programs led by incompetent coaching staffs -- none of which have far superior talent than Pascagoula.  The fact Pascagoula is getting whipped by them is even more of an indictment of those steering the ship.

Say what you will about the coast because I think the brand of football down there is bad myself. But right now Brandon, OG, and WC are just as good as anyone up North. And most of the 6A title games have been toss ups and close games. Just because the south has been on the losing end of those games don’t mean the teams aren’t good.

He started this by saying the North was embarrassingly bad, not me. I said what I said and I stand by it. Agree, or disagree. Doesn't really matter to me.

maybe i should say teams north of jackson or south of jackson

because the regions dont really line up

in the north you only have tupelo, southaven and south panola, the other 6 teams in region 1 are bad

the way the regions are set up, you dont always get the best two teams in the state championships
