Slick 5A Primo Ten Rankings Week 4 sponsored by Cooleys Backstreet Burgers

Format errors in there but all the words and meaning are present. I’ve had time to think about it but not type it out.

 

We are winding down. First time this season all the teams in top ten won. Definitely a shakeup coming after this Friday. Some good games out there get up out of the house and go. I will be up in Hattiesburg this Friday. I showed up at 730 the other Friday as I didn’t know they moved it to 700 yet. I will be on time for this one.

 

 

 

 

 

1. Picayune -  Didn’t really have that much fun against pad your stats against us high school last Friday. At least the Tide may get to enjoy a nice warm fire and the fall colors starting to settle in on the outskirts of the river. Picayune is starting to look like one of those once in a decade teams that breezes through the season, playoffs and title game without really being challenged .                               Hosts George County. Maybe the Tide can expand their footprint with organizing a have you seen them campaign to find the George team from last year after running into the unit of soft plastic mannequins that will be hauled in Friday night. Seriously what has happened over there ?

 

2. West Jones -  continued the abuse of Florence last Friday who is looking more and more like the pretender most of us said they were with that cheezy non region schedule. West Jones outclassed them across the board.                                                         ********           @Laurel between the crumbling bricks. I have heard a lot of chattter this week about Laurel making a statement against West. Me ? I think West has been waiting almost a year to put the first nail in the coffin closing lineup of teams coming up for Laurel. West will get after that dwarf QB Laurel has and force him into early mistakes that makes this one a showdown turned letdown quickly.

 

3. Gautier-  Already with a low pressure light on the defenses tires. Vancleave, a team that scored 29 on George the week before put up 28 them last Friday. You be the judge. Are the tires starting to fail like they always do about now ?                               *********                                Hosts East Central. Primo matchup. You want to belong ? Put some air in those donut tires and show us this is not the same old same old.

 

4. Wayne County - I really didn’t like the way Natchez hung around last Friday and had the lead at one point 12-10 on a mishandled snap on a punt.  The Eagles were able to flip a switch at that point and speed past the Bulldogs. I almost dropped them to #5 but this game was anything but normal. Distraction after distraction from the Natchez operation all game. It’s difficult to refocus and pick up the intensity time after time.        ******                                                                  @Hattiesburg. Another Primo matchup . Hattiesburg has give it to us pretty good since Coach Mangum left. They have been competitive games but Wayne County lost. A contender will go into Hattiesburg, take care of business and come back home. A playoff team could go in lose, lick their wounds and get ready to beat Laurel . This game will send a big message to the rest of our region and 5A. IDK I just think this is a bad spot for our kids to win. This will be a spotlight game in a stadium they have never played in. We have played flat offensively in Pascagoula and Brookhaven. This won’t be a standoff until late like those two.

5. West Point - The Green Wave. I picture the gladiator quote of “he who makes the rain “. I think of a visiting or host opponent seeing the Wave come in and it starting to rain on them and it don’t stop until the Wave recedes from sight.                           **************                        Hosts Greenville . 0-7 team going into West Point. Everyone is thinking the same thing. I give respect to them young men coming all the way across the state and still trying. Meanwhile in region 2 storm clouds gather to the South and Southwest.

 

 

6. Vicksburg - People I have spoken with said this is a team that can make it out of the North. I haven’t seen them but they have been stacking the Ws. This is the time of year title contenders turn it on.     **************Hosts Neshoba Central.  Marquee Primo matchup here. The Gators have a heavyweight coming this Friday. For both teams , these are the kind of games that gives the momentum and confidence to finish the job in a few weeks. If we weren’t in a dogfight this Friday I would probably make the drive up I55 . Then cut through on backroads at Hazelhurst and work my way up to  Vburg. I know several old timers up in those woods.

 

7. East Central- Enjoyed their off week I’m sure entertaining the South Jones of the coast. Those are good but you are riding for second place in your district this Friday                                                         @Gautier. EC has the style of play to win this game but it will take imposing their will on Gautier I think they will blow off a tire for Gautier defense either way.  Should be a good gauge for playoffs because Gautier athletes on offense are what they will be seeing from several R3 teams.

 

8. Neshoba Central- Did a number on Jen Hill but they weren’t the first and won’t be the last for Jen I’m sure. Jokes aside this is a team that will come to play and won’t rollover and play dead.                                                                                                                                                                                                                         @Vicksburg. This won’t be easy and it’s what you can expect in the playoffs. Who can elevate their play in this Primo matchup.  This is the kind of game you pack up and leave at  noon for. Neshoba has been performing good for a while now and deserve to have their people there behind them.

     

 

9. Hattiesburg- Everyone is perked up and listening now. Deonte,we’ll I know you ain’t coming but Vott message me if you want to get together. Maybe you could get me a front row parking spot, I mean that would be neighborly or even Coach Vance. I know your peeps on here a little extend the olive branch. Maybe I could reciprocate. Okay enough of that, lol.  I can’t lie if we weren’t in the same region I would probably be behind you guys because above all else football is about resilience. I’m not privy to anything over there but these kind of accomplishments almost always involve a leader standing up and letting everyone know I’m not going out like this and I’m not going to let you either.All it takes is a leader.                                                                                                                                         
 

Hosts WaynCounty. Another marquee,bring the TV cameras type Primo matchup. There will be as much hoopla around this game as any the War Eagles have played in. The Tigers definitely have the edge. 

 

10. Holmes County - struggled with Provine. I get it they play a defense you can’t score a lot on. But almost losing ? You are #10 I kind of understand but do better or I’m going to look to someone on the rise to finish the season out.                                                                                                                                                         @Callaway. Oh look it’s that dude that got unmasked in Vicksburg a few weeks ago. Now he’s wearing a new mask as a one loss unemployed divorcee back on the bar scene.  They had to jump his truck off at closing time the other night but he will be there this Friday. Could this be the battle for Tenth ?

You act like Florence wasn't going to beat Wayne County until a muffed punt at the end of the game or like they didn't lose to Hattiesburg by only 7.  Other than playing Florence, Wayne County has played the cupcake version of the district schedule and is about to get exposed.  We will really find out if Wayne County is worth anything in the final 3 weeks.  Finally, I don't know how anyone could even take you seriously after what you said about the end of the Natchez/Wayne County game. "Don't worry boys it's all on film." Yes it was all on film and certainly not anything nearly as bad as you made it out to be, your head coach has even said it was not that bad.

Well that’s kind of the point. Florence always makes some kind of mistake at the end of the game to blow it . 
Wayne County exposed ? If it happens it happens . Doesn’t impair my ability to have an opinion on other teams or games. I haven’t made any wild claims of dominance or expectations. The schedule will play itself out but that’s the future. Now is now. As far as the film. You do know there are two sets of video right ? The team has another camera that rolls till the end and beyond. What’s on you tube is another operation entirely so I don’t  know what you expected. Did I state you would see it , but thanks for your interest. I have never asked you or anyone else to take me serious.So  I apologize for your disappointment.

No anger here just pointing out facts. You are correct you are entitled to have opinions on other teams and games. Your prognostication included language that would indicate that Florence has been abused in district play and that simply is not true.  If you want to say Florence got abused by WJ, well that is probably right but they certainly did not continue any abuse because in the other 2 losses Florence has this year they gave as good as they got.  As for the "two sets of video" I would assume if it was anywhere near as bad as you got on here and made it out to be there would be suspensions by MHSAA and as of today I have heard of none. Appreciate the welcome to the board and don't worry about me flaming out too quick I can handle this my reptile friend.

For your first two posts on MST, why are you so mad?  Slick works extremely hard at putting these rankings together and they are absolutely fantastic to read.  Don’t get butthurt over cupcake eater Florence.  It’s not worth it.  The diabetus finally caught up with them these last three weeks.  If they can get some insulin shots these last three weeks they’ll still be in the thick of it.  They just need to avoid foot injuries and wear proper diabetic shoes and they’ll be just fine.

Maroon thanks for the laugh. Certainly not mad and to Picayune everybody in the South outside of maybe West Jones is a cupcake so no need to worry about Florence falling into a diabetic coma they have to show up and play every week.

Why would you be privy to that info ? You were wrong above saying it wasn’t that bad.There were a lot of the players families standing there too greet the players going into the field house.

He don’t like his team obviously being described in a demeaning way. I probably wouldn’t either but I’m not going to hesitate to do it again in the future. I could see they were a disciplined team when they came to Waynesboro.  Honestly I think their holdup is coaching. While poised their offensive philosophy sucked. How are you going to have those two KR and not get them in isolation on offense is perplexing. They were faster than any player we had on defense. You can question the abused part but can’t question where you are at in the district . You are not on bottom but you are rubbing elbows with some bad company.

I have a question about our game with Florence  maybe our new MST brother can give me the answer. With just a few minutes left, two or three minutes , I’m not exact but it was close.  Florence punted. They were moving the ball a little but got stopped on third. We were starting to run the ball too. We ran the clock out . My question why punt there ? You had the ball at midfield or close ? You had to know there was a good chance you weren’t getting the ball back. I don’t think there was any t/o left either.  I thought that call was milk toast and showed no confidence in his offense.

I wouldn't say tiered and I wouldn't and didn't say everyone else is a cupcake unless you are looking from the mountain that Picayune is standing on, I would say that to Picayune everyone outside of WJ is cupcake material. That is not really a shot at everybody else in 5A South more about how good Picayune is this year, and about the program that WJ has and how they execute on the field.  With that said Hattiesburg certainly has a chance to stand in WJ way so we will see.

Reptile- I appreciate your concern for the coaching at Florence but this is probably the best staff Florence has ever had top to bottom, remember we were 1-9 last year and sitting at 5-3 this year,  they have  Florence going in the right direction. As for the company Florence is keeping don't worry I fell like WC is on their way to join us in the middle. As for the decision to punt late in the game, I can't criticize the decision it was like 4th and 7 and punting pinned WC inside its own 20 and all the D had to do was get the stop and Florence still had a chance, looking back at film WC ran 9 plays after receiving that punt so if the D gets a stop there is a chance.  It is also important to note that Florence's D had pretty much shut WC down in the second half outside of the 4th and 23 WC scored on after recovering the muffed punt catch deep in Florence's territory, and the series before had been a 3 and out for WC's offense.

Ok I have different opinions than all of you guy but it’s just my opinion. For one I believe Florence can sneak in the playoffs. If they win out and I believe they can and laurel drops two they are in. Florence has played the meat of the region, now Laurel has face the meat of their schedule.

As for WC dropping to middle of the pack? I can’t agree with that after three seasons of watching our kids do pretty much whatever they wanted to do, we hire Coach Hankins. He’s an old school no nonsense coach who’s making progress. Knowing the youth on the Freshman squad and middle school teams and the fact this team is playing loads of Sophomores and Juniors the future is bright. We don’t have the luxury of the bailout Jackson public school athletes.

Great post.  I've thought Florence could get in all along.  If they win out (which I expect they will), there's no reason for them not to take the 4th seed in region 3.

Nerrp I'm not buying that. I'm sure everyone including you remember Novemebr 16th, 2018. It's gonna be a battle each week and thy still have Gautier in the season finale. How will thy fare against pass? That to me is what will really separate Picayune from the rest.

Slick you missed a hard fought football game.  It was 6-0 until less than 2 minutes left in the game.

This is the time of year title contenders turn it on.     **************Hosts Neshoba Central.  Marquee Primo matchup here. The Gators have a heavyweight coming this Friday. For both teams , these are the kind of games that gives the momentum and confidence to finish the job in a few weeks. If we weren’t in a dogfight this Friday I would probably make the drive up I55 . Then cut through on backroads at Hazelhurst and work my way up to  Vburg. I know several old timers up in those woods.

 

Slick you missed a hard fought football game.  It was 6-0 until less than 2 minutes left in the game.  

Didn't Vicksburg clinch the 1 seed/district championship for Region 2?  I'd like to see the Gators make some noise come playoff time.

Yes they clinched 1st.  They have a strong D with very good size.  They very well could make a run at it.  Neshoba and Callaway play Friday for 2nd place
