Go to 8 Classes:

8A 20 schools

7A 20 schools

6A 24 schools

5A 24 schools

4A 40 schools

3A 40 schools

2A 40 schools

1A 44 schools

5A----8A Champs play it off

1A----4A Champs play it off

Only the top 3 per region with everyone in playoffs 1st week of November.

It goes to show you that most smaller schools will not defeat larger schools in a final 4/final 6 set up. It's not happening. But 7 classes are watered down football.

If I were king of the world (fortunately am not) I would only have 5 classes given how much consolidation has and will continue to take place in the next twenty years. I suspect several current 1A and 2A schools will close and merge as populations continue to drop and school facilities deteriorate with no money to repair or replace them. For a state as small as ours, there is really no reason to continually split hairs.

I agree. In my opinion, there is no reason schools like Bogue Chitto, West Lincoln, Lloyd Star and Enterprise-Lincoln could not be merged into Brookhaven High School (or even merging them into one big county school). Same with Tylertown and Salem. There are tons of examples of this all over the state and I wish more would come together and utilize their available resources better.

Logistically some counties are simply too spread out to properly consolidate. When Oktibbeha consolidated some kids weren't getting off the bus till after 6 o'clock. It's better now, but some kids are still on buses for nearly 2 hours, which is insane.

I could see where that would be an issue in some counties for sure.

It certainly could be an issue in some and I'm not always of the bigger is better mindset. I just believe that in some counties there will be mergers in the coming years. Simpson County is apparently heading that way and Marion County tried a bond issue recently that was unsuccessful for the facility, but I don't know if the board still plans to put West and East Marion together.

I am a native of Northeast Mississippi and the area has lots of 1A and 2A schools. Most of them are still around basically out of tradition and lack of will to change, but someday finances and facilities will likely take over. All of that to say why keep spreading out existing schools into more classes when we all know the number of schools in the state will drop, not increase.

It will be best if East Lincoln and West Lincoln. Brookhaven gas their own school district separately from Lincoln County Schools. Building 2 new high schools on each side of Brookhaven East of 55 and west of 55.

First of all, this merging into Brookhaven isn't going to happen because Brookhaven is a city school with its own school district and tax base, the Lincoln County Schools (Bogue Chitto, West Lincoln, Loyd Star and Enterprise are under their own umbrella. And with the Jones County Schools, you have a big county with nearly 70,000 people, and two separate school districts to accommodate this large population Jones County (2 5A schools, West Jones and South Jones, and one large 4A school Northeast Jones), and Laurel the city school which is 5A. Merging is lot more complicated than it sounds with truly a lot more to be considered both strategically and geographically.

So was Winona and so was Starkville, both have consolidated.

The Northeast in particular will never merge unless forced by the state. Those schools fiercely refuse to consolidate.

Remember it's not the schools that merge or consolidate, but the individuals, usually 5 of them, which votes to consolidate due to getting pressure from financially backed upper-level elite politicians. Those 5 usually go by the title of school board.

If a coach is willing to have 5 or 4 region games and  6  non region games you have to spread out the classifications to 7 classes. We can't go to 8 it just doesn't make since. However maybe you bring back the Big 8, Little 8, Pine Belt, and Sam Dale among other conferences in some form as non region games.

I grew up in Northeast Mississippi and know there is staunch opposition to consolidation. I do think at some point the inability to maintain facilities that are already old and subpar plus the financial pressures that come with it will influence some people. Would it be enough? I will never say never.

School boards make these decisions and typically you will find there are some people who really are for it but won't speak it out loud for fear of retribution. Still, I'd say it's likely to happen someday, but maybe not in my lifetime.

I do agree. There are way too many schools in Lincoln county. And maybe even jones county too.

Jones County having too many schools??  No way.  West Jones is bursting at the seams.  South Jones not all that far behind them.  It’s more likely they would tell-do the lines to send kids out of those two to Northeast Jones to equalize the numbers than ever consolidate them.

I can see the Northeast Counties setting up a:

North, Central, South or East, Central, West type system similar to Pontotoc County. Lincoln County as well. Smith Ciunty could consolidate Mize/Taylorsville high schools by building a new School along hwy 28 and east of 35.

no need to consolidate smith county when you have two schools that are A rated. The only thing you could do is make Tville elementary and JH only and high school they go to mize or Raleigh depending on where they live. There is too much money already invested in all 3 schools to justify any type of consolidation. Heck Tville just built a multi million dollar baseball field

A 1A school has no business spending that much on a baseball field.
