One player can’t usually rescue a season. I’m wondering what happens to Petal in the reclassification next year. If they drop down a class, they might be able to win some games.

Perhaps. But even if they stay 6a they still gonna have tough games against teams like Hburg West Jones Picayune and Laurel

Yeah, a lot of people are saying that Petal was the driving force pushing this new reclassification because they had fallen behind some of the other teams in that district. They are for sure right at the cutoff line for 6A and 7A.

A good friend from college has a son there on the team and he said they are hearing they will stay 7A. Which he did not sound excited about LOL.

There's always hope.If Petal and sweep their last three games they got a shot to make the playoffs.

Petal will not beat Meridian or Warren Central. All summer long it was being said that the QB that came from Biloxi was going to make Petal much better than last season. But it seems they took a bigger step back this season and Biloxi has improved this season without him.

I think it is more about the region and overall how tough winning 6A (soon to be 7A) is. They think if they played down a class, they would be able to roll through it not realizing you still are going to have West Jones, Hattiesburg, Picayune and possibly Wayne County as well.

In my opinion , football in south MS is seems to be difficult no matter was classification you are in. Up north there is more of a drop off between classes. especially 4a-6a

Great observation there Brick.  I don't think anyone can disagree with that.  Now I need you to do me a huge favor.  Make sure Germantown gets a W Friday night LOL!

It's all good Brick, I just had to see if I caught you napping LOL!  I think y'all will be in for a dandy Friday night.  I know Germantown will be the underdog, but Russell will have those boys ready to play.  He knows what he is doing and he has already made a huge difference at Germantown and hasn't finished a whole season yet.  He knows that if he's going to beat Madison Central that he'll have to do it as an underdog anyway.  I wish there wasn't a geographical oddity or else I'd be there Friday night.

It should be a good one. Germantown is much improved from last year. Our students are enjoying the local rivalry, and we even went as far as having a student section in our 9th grade game against them. Game should have a lot of hype around it

Petal, is Petal.  That is to say that it does not matter if they are in 5A , 6A, or 7A.  They will struggle way more often than not.

Back when there were still only 5 classes they spent a few years in 4A region 5 with west jones, Laurel and Wayne county.  And they crushed more often than not.

if Marcus Boyles couldn’t win state the years he was there I would not put much faith in anyone else doing it.

Man Petal has made a living of off getting athletes from other schools more than anyone the last few years. There is little homegrown talent that comes out of there. This year as in other years they have gotten players from surrounding schools. Now I know kids move and people transfer because they believe it is better opportunities but they do not have the base talent to inject those kids and put them over the top. Heck I remember years ago when that stadium was built you couldn't get a seat in it on Friday or Saturday Nights. Went to a game this year and it was not nearly that away. Petal has a name but they are not a powerhouse. Good school, great academics, exciting band and very competitive in some of their other sports.

So why do you think Germantown is much improved from last year?  Is it players, coaching or a little bit of both?

You are right. He has a lot of influence from the GOAT Cody Stogner. G-Town will be looking like another Yune soon enough.

The great thing about Russell Mitchell is that he creates his own success by doing his own thing.  He doesn't need influence from previous coaches that he has worked with to accomplish that.  That's why he will do great things at Germantown.
