Vott
What has happened to Moss Point this season? Werent they supposed to be a playoff caliber team this season in 4a
maroontide06
Interesting line of thought there Vott. They went from winning 3 straight district championships to being at 0-7 this year. I remember when a win at Dantzler Stadium was a big deal. They must have either lost everyone from last year’s team or they got hit with a bad injury bug. MSSportsGuy
From what I gather the entire community is just a shell of what it was. Look at their overall enrollment that was decimated after Katrina and never recovered. I gather drugs and violence could be a major problem as well. People with the means to live elsewhere apparently opt to do so.
coastfootballfanman
It began when the paper mill shut down in 2001. Katrina hurt as well and since probably 2005-2006, city population has continued to plummet. Many residents over the years choose to live elsewhere along the coast and in Mississippi. The city itself has also gone completely downhill with crime, drugs, and gang violence. My college roommate and one of my best friends is from Moss Point and I would go there quite often in the mid-late 90's to visit. It is a shame to have been back over the past 20+ years and see what the town has turned into. I was told a few weeks ago that they are most likely going to be 3A when the numbers come out in a few weeks.

Sadly there are too many places in Mississippi (and elsewhere) suffering the same fate.

Didn't think they'd drop another classification so quickly though.

I remember hearing a few years back that MDE was potentially going to take over the district or have them be merged with another district near by. What every happened with that? Wareaglefan1us
Man I use to hate to make that trip lol . WC went down and played in a cold blowing rain when Bilbo was QB. It was an intimidating place then for sure they had several of their fans on the visiting side with their MP hard hats on. The fence was lined with their fans talking trash all the way to your seat. But I hate that the program is at the low it is now.

I don’t know if Picayune has ever had a true adversarial rival so to speak, but if there ever was one it was definitely Moss Point. That used to be a game back in the (not so long ago) day. There was never any love lost when those two teams met on the gridiron.
foozballfanatic
Man those Billy Miller and Jerry Alexander days were something to behold! Moss Point was the team of the 80s and mid to late 90s. I think Jerry Alexander won 5 state titles! If y’all get a chance look up the 1997 game Moss Point vs Blount(AL). Real Man football!

They weren't the team of the 80s by any stretch. Three losing seasons including 1-9 in 1987 with Miller coasting in his twilight and posting a 3 win season in his final year. Alexander assumed the reigns the next year and won it all. Billy won it in '83 and Jerry won four: '91 '96 '97 '

I hope one day they can get it together. That stadium on the river is a sweet Friday Night Football setting!

And good mention about Dantzler Stadium which has to be the most unique setting in the state.
CrimsonUnit1988
96, 97, and 98 South Panola had one loss in each of those seasons. It was Moss Point every time. 96 and 97 in the title game and 98 they played in the first game of the year so technically South Panola lost back to back games to Moss Point.
