Small school/Large school

College scholarship offers and NFL are two pretty different categories. Mississippi has always done well historically getting people in the NFL but our smaller schools no longer seem to get D1 offers in the same numbers as before. Most of our schools are small, lower on the SES scale compared to a lot of high schools in places like FL, TX, GA, CA. Those states have more "football factories" and those tend to be the guys who are snagging D1 offers from P5 programs. Additionally, most guys in MS can't afford to have private coaching or be sent to elite camps where they get noticed. The larger monetization of the sport has definitely kept a lot of guys from being noticed.

That being said I've seen lots of guys from the smaller schools find a way in the NFL. NFL staying power seems to be at least partially a mental thing as much as athletic ability and the right mix of both can usually spell success, especially if they stay injury free.

My guess is 90% of Mississippi athletes to make it to NFL have come from 4A-6A We can probably count 1A-3A athletes on two hands.

I concur, and frankly our 4A and 5A are still pretty small when you look at how large high schools are in other places with larger populations.

As far as NFL you can count multiple kids from Bassfield, Taylorsville, Raleigh, and MIze.  These are all small schools within 30 miles of each other.  Im sure it's like this all over the state.  Now as far as college offers the portal has hurt recruiting high school players big time.  As far as I can tell the size of the program really doesn't matter.  If you can truly play they will find you.

Thats why we recruit all these smaller schools. Great athletes

This is an invalid argument though considering that 6A Madison probably has 83% more children than a 2 Scott Central. So of course they have a higher population that move on. All of this talk is skewed and doesn't matter.  The real argument is which regions of the state produce more.

That's an easy one. Take 82 from Alabama  west to I-55 then south to Louisiana line. Don't leave out DeSoto. Panola, and Lafayette Counties.  Or as we say over yonder in the Pibe Belt to the Red Clay Hills.

There is this myth out there that parents need to love their kids out of these smaller schools and send them to larger schools so they can get more exposure. That’s just a bad logical argument to me. It’s not 1999 anymore. Heck it’s not even 2010 anymore. We have advanced so much with technology and recruiting that it doesn’t matter anymore… if you are good enough, you can be found.

Franklin County had a QB I believe his name was Jamie Collins but I could be wrong. He went on and play several seasons with the Patriot s as linebacker. You can throw Bassfield, and Taylorsville in there just to name a few. But small schools in Mississippi have produced some NFL greats.

Deuce McCallister at Morton, Pinkston from Forest, Moncrief and 1 more from Raleigh, Duckworth I believe from Mize, Mangum from Magee.

Anyone mentioned Jason Campbell from Taylorsville?

Mize has only had 1 player go to the NFL and that’s Eugene Sims. But we have had multiple play college ball. I’m not concerned with how many go to the NFL, I’m interested in how many school players and large schools players play football beyond high school. Even if it’s JUCO

In your original post you stated NFL along with college so I thought you were interested.  But again, I really think people get too caught up in big and small schools producing.  Large schools have vastly larger numbers of students, therefore they have no choice but to send more people to the next level.  It's just math.  I heard a stat the other day from a friend who is a coach that Mankusso has had somewhere in the neighborhood of like 60 kids sign since he has been over there.  That is impressive considering I see schools here in jones county with all these 5A schools not sign more than a couple a year.  Why my argument is its more region and head coach than big or small school.

That's who I was thinking of.

Yeah I just saw that. I don’t know why I included NFL

Coaches will find players anywhere nowadays. With the internet and film of every single game it is hard for a kid to go unnoticed these days. Even more so when colleges have these analyst and off field recruiting coaches part of the payroll whose job is to find the best regardless. 15 years ago I would’ve disagreed but now regardless of the size a player will be found whether it be a 2A county school for colleges or MS Valley for the NFL

This is exactly what I have been saying. It’s not like it was 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. If you are good enough, you can go to a JUCO at minimum
