CFB Week 6 Thread

Let me start by saying this is one of the dumber TV schedules I have ever seen for a week of games. CBS doubleheader weeks can really be a drag. I realize it’s all about eyeballs and big brand names. But it sucks when the two best games of the day are both thrown at 11 AM because we have to accommodate the two blowouts that Bama-A&M and Auburn-Georgia likely will be. Really hoping ESPN has a better plan for scheduling once this CBS deal expires, but I highly doubt it.

Anyway, moving on to the actual games.

Arkansas at State, one of the aforementioned 11 AM games (ugh). I actually think this has a chance to be one of the more entertaining games in the league this year…. With one caveat. There are rumors swirling in Hog Land that KJ Jefferson is in the concussion protocol and may be unavailable. If so, that changes the conversation for sure. I tend to think State is the better team regardless, but there’s absolutely a path to an Arkansas win if Jefferson plays. I think it’s fair to be a lot less sure of that if he’s out. Arkansas runs the ball very well and rushes the passer pretty well too, so State will need to be good in the trenches as they were against A&M. If Rogers has time to throw then I expect him to have a good day. I won’t call this a must win for State but you’re a ranked team at home playing an unranked team with uncertainty at QB… this probably should be a game you win.

State is currently an 8 point home favorite, I’ll take them to win at home regardless I think, but the cover may depend on Jefferson’s status. Hoping the kickoff time doesn’t kill the crowd for this game, but the weather looks great for Saturday.

Ole Miss at Vandy… I mean what is there to say? The only thing that gives me any pause is OM’s strange history of struggling with Vandy at random times. Last year’s game in Oxford was weirdly close too if I recall. I don’t have much doubt about OM winning this game, I just wonder if a somewhat improved Vandy can keep it interesting for a little while. But my gut says Ole Miss probably covers the 18.5 point spread.

Tennessee at LSU is game that really got screwed on the time slot. This one has no business being at 11 AM, especially in Baton Rouge. I can’t quite figure out either team to be honest with you. Tennessee’s offense is a lot of fun but they struggle defensively. And who the heck knows if this LSU team is any good or not. I think for me, I’m not quite at a point where I totally trust Tennessee yet, they’ve given plenty of reasons not to fit the last 15 years. So I’m going with LSU to win at home.

I have nothing else to say about Bama-A&M and Auburn-Georgia, not much interest in watching either game unless something shocking happens.

Kentucky-South Carolina got a night kickoff for some reason. I’ll take Kentucky at home, I feel like they’ve owned SC since Stoops arrived.

Florida-Mizzou…. Poor Mizzou, two heartbreakers in two weeks. Maybe this is the week they break through???? Eh, probably not. UF wins it at home.

How about College Gameday going to Lawrence, KS for TCU-Kansas? Both undefeated and ranked now. That’s awesome for those two. That game should be a shootout, I think TCU is a little better and they probably win. But what a story Kansas has become, and winning here would really be something.

Yeah, it's just a bad day of football ON PAPER... those weekends sure have ended up with some interesting games though, we'll see what happens.

I'm a tad surprised UT is only favored by 3 at LSU. UT wins and covers.

MSU favored by 8 over Arkansas... I like MSU to win but not sure by 8. I like this as a very close exciting game to watch. If KJ Jefferson is out, MSU should cover easily.

OM should win easily, but I'm not sure they cover the spread over Vandy. I'm curious how the OM offense looks in the second half of this game, there seems to be a trend on second half O struggles.

Mizzou has a way of hanging around without winning. UF wins, Mizzou covers.

UGA wins but doesn't cover 30 points. UGA has struggled two weeks in a row and I'm not buying they can cover 30 points vs Auburn.

KY wins and covers.

I like Bama to win but wouldn't touch that line. I lean Saban runs up the score after the offseason yacking between Saban/Jimbo... so I guess Bama covers?

Truthfully it’s one of those days where I will go to the State game at 11 and then I may not watch much football the rest of the day, unless something crazy happens. Even outside the SEC, the most interesting games are in that early window (namely Texas-Oklahoma and TCU-Kansas).

Rebmus, you’re not wrong about these being the days where weird things happen. Like we look up and Vandy is tied with Ole Miss in the 4th quarter or something like that. And heck, any long time OM fan will tell you that wouldn’t even be that weird. Lol. There was about a 20 year stretch where the series was almost a 50/50 split, and that included some very good OM teams either losing to or struggling mightily with Vandy.

What do OM fans think the problem is with the second halves?   Just 3 points in the last two games (although both wins) and a significant decrease in yards.

Agree on OM/Vandy Dawg83... it's typically a much closer game than the experts think. I'll add (knock on wood), OM has had major contributors injured vs Vandy so many times it seems. That's not suggesting Vandy plays dirty at all, it's almost always a weird injury that rarely happens on a given play.

Satch, a FEW OM fans think Lane it's keeping the offense "vanilla" which leads to the second half adjustments by opponent's D to shut down OM in the second half.

I'm not buying that and only a FEW have said it to my knowledge.

Almost all OM fans I know see it as an issue and have no explanation.

I lean it boils down to opponents making halftime adjustments and Dart doesn't adjust well to them at his age. Dart is an underclassman and also in a brand new system this season, he should improve as the year goes. We'll see.

I think some of it is the lack of an explosive passing game and teams sit on short stuff and running game. And some of it has to do with Dart being in a new system. Hopefully it gets better with him getting more comfortable.

Ole Miss is likely to be flat after an emotional win over KY. Ordinarily, they would be ripe for an upset. But while Vandy is improved I don’t see this being the usual tight game between these two. Vandy may have a lead early but Ole Miss wins 31-17 in a semi competitive game early.

Arkansas-State might be rat poison coming out of FYV concerning Jefferson. I think he will play and that State has prepared as if he were playing. I like State to continue to play well and win this game. Not sure what the score may look like but I will go with 35-24.

Tennessee@LSU. The Vols are the better team but LSU is no slouch this year. I think they burst the Vol bubble. 34-31.

Bama wins over A&M but it is not shellacking. Bama still coasts to a win. 41–19.

UGA 28, Auburn 10.

Missouri is not able sustain the emotions of last Saturday. Florida wins comfortably 28-8.

Kentucky rebounds with a win. USCe will play hard but come up short. KY 20, SCAR 10.

In the Gameday game, TCU edges Kansas 36-35 in an epic finish.

My best guess:

Ole Miss 31 Vandy 20 (but 45-0 is not out of the question, have a weird feeling about Ole Miss maybe playing sleepy in between two big home games)

If KJ Jefferson plays: State 34 Arkansas 28

If KJ is out: State 38 Arkansas 17

I don't get the whole uncertainty of if KJ is playing or not.  Sam Pittman said he is traveling with the team, so that tells me he is playing.  He may not be directly up front with it, but why does he need to be if you can read between the lines?  If I was a betting man (which I'm not), then I would bet on him playing.  Why would anyone in their right mind bet against that?

Well I was surprised that KJ didn’t play today.  I think Sam Pittman probably thought he was playing as well.  Great win for the Bulldogs!  Any win over Arkansas is a sweet one.  I was pleased with our rushing game today and Dillon Johnson is an absolute beast.  Hopefully we can get our PAT/field goal unit fixed.  That was five points left on the field that should be on the scoreboard.  Overall great win for State and it should vault us into the top 20 in both polls.

Arkansas is dangerous offensively but BAD on defense. I’m not sure Rogers broke a sweat in that game, he had that much time to work. State’s defense gave up yards but did a good job of not giving up points. Obviously missing Jefferson didn’t help things for the Hogs.

State is a really good team when they can protect Rogers. The remaining schedule is still tough. I said before this three game stretch that State needed at least 2-1. But man, a win in Lexington next week would be massive in terms of what this team’s ceiling could be. You’re potentially talking the Egg Bowl being for a NY6 spot if you can get there at 8-3.

Yeah this was about what I expected in Nashville. Ole Miss sleepy early but still going to win comfortably.

In other news, Will Levis is out of Kentucky’s game tonight with a foot injury. Definitely worth monitoring for State vs UK next week.
