Bulldogs4
There is no way Kermit Davis should be fired. To me the man might be Coach of the Year, considering how depleted his team and yet they remain competitive and are winning some games. For State it is the same old some old. Poor start and poor finish, poor FT shooting, poor bench play. Very disappointing last night because the team has an abundance of talent but has not played a complete game all year against a quality team. No excuses. Tennessee is certainly a very good team but they are a very beatable team. Sigh and ugggghhhh. As D83 noted, this team is so frustrating to watch. MSTSatchmo
Other than Molinar, State has no consistent scorer and they have no shooters.
rebmus
B4, I don't know about coach of the year but I do agree it makes sense for Kermit to get another year considering the injuries. We'll see if he gets that year, I don't get a vote either way. Ha
Bulldogs4
State looks like they have thrown in the towel. LSU just outscored is 37-15 to end the half. Very disappointing effort in the first half.

I somewhat think both get 1 more year, but I wouldn't bet on it either way.
MSTSatchmo
State is keeping it close 43 all with about 10min left. I’m sure they’ll find a way to lose close. I think OM just doesn’t have any talent, besides Ruffin who’s out. Even when he was playing, I was expecting much more from him.
rebmus
The injuries are the ONLY thing that may give Kermit another year.
rebmus
LSU beat MSU 69-65. Mizzou beat OM 74-68. Nice effort in the second half by the two MS teams, but not enough. At least we aren't 1-11 Georgia in the basketball conference standings, we have that!
Bulldogs4
State played better in the second half but the end of the game was still poor. Smith/Garcia both missed two FT’s at a critical juncture about midway through the second half when we had taken the lead. Got to cash in on your FT’s especially on the road. Neither Coach should be in danger of losing their job. State has just been inconsistent all year and we have failed to play one complete game to date. pancho
Inconsistency goes right back to the HC if he has a full roster. My money is on Howland peacefully retiring after the season ends. Where Cohen goes after that is anybody's wild guess.
sportsmaniac10
Pretty rough year for all the Mississippi schools in college basketball on the men's side. Mississippi state men may make the NIT though that isn't certain yet. The inconsistency has pretty much ruined any chance of a stand out season though. Howland is mirroring Andy Kennedy in a lot of ways at Mississippi state. He elevated the program from where they were before he arrived and created a lot of hope and what ifs, but he hasn't been able to get over the hurdle and have a big break through year. And now his tenure is growing a little stale. You get consistent winning seasons but minimal post season success, very much like Kennedy. I doubt State holds onto him as long as Ole Miss did Kennedy though. Ole Miss wasn't doing well when the team was healthy so all the injuries definitely not helping anyone other than Kermit. The injuries buy him another year. Though the 4 year extension was not the greatest decision from the athletic department and could also lead to Kermit getting more than 1 more year. But lets be honest, overall Kermit's tenure has been disappointing. Other than taking a team with someone else's recruits to the NCAA tournament, he's done nothing. This will likely be his second losing season in 4 years. Next year will likely be NCAA tournament or time to find a new coach. What is baffling is that every article you read is that Ole Miss is grabbing the best recruits they've ever had in Ole Miss basketball history. Unfortunately, none of them have had the success on the college level that everyone expected out of high school. Makes you start to wonder if Kermit can develop players well enough to succeed at a power conference school. So far it seems like the answer to that question is no. Also it seemed very strange Ole Miss was able to grab a 5 star recruit that initially committed to Duke like Brakefield. Well after watching this season, fans have figured out why Ole Miss got Brakefield. Surprise, he's not very good. Shocking almost doesn't describe how overrated he is to have been rated a 5 star and then sign with Duke. The other thing about Kermit, that I think is going to bring his tenure to a close is that he is a defensive minded coach. Unfortunately college basketball today is about offense. Very few power 5 schools rely on defense alone to win games and not many have sustained success. Props to Kermit because his teams have always played hard and scrappy on D but if you can't score then you can't win. He's still a good coach and will do well at a mid-major somewhere but he's not the answer for Ole Miss. Southern Miss men's team remains a dumpster fire. Hopefully the transition to the Sunbelt will allow them try and turn things around. Both Jackson State and MVSU also having seasons to forget. Need some big changes in the off season to turn things around for Mississippi men's college basketball.

For the most part recruiting rankings are pretty accurate, but the transfer portal will show which recruits were overrated or underrated. Dawg83
I said I was done commenting on basketball for the season barring something drastic, so I’ll try to make it quick. I think this is Ben Howland’s last year at State. I don’t think this tenure has been a total failure, as it is clearly an improvement from what his predecessor did, but 7 years in this still hasn’t been what most hoped for. One total NCAAT game in all these seasons, the inability to get buy-in from the fan base, constantly losing big game after big game and generally having teams that underachieve. It feels like it’s time to move in a different direction. This coach has already peaked here, and the peak wasn’t even that high.

NCAA basketball success is based on NCAAT appearances and Howland has failed at that.

You can make a case that 6 of his 7 teams have underachieved. I’m willing to give him last year, I thought that team was going to really stink and they almost won the NIT. But every other team has just done the bare minimum until now, and it appears this team won’t even do that and there’s a good chance this costs him his job. Bulldogs4
Wish the State men were being coached by the State women’s coaching staff. Talk about maximizing what you have and translating it into victories. This staff has done that with about 8 scholarship players and zero inside players and absolutely no height at all. Tremendous job by Novak, the staff and the players . They had no business beating Ole Miss yesterday. But they did . If our men played with the total effort, efficiency and execution that women play with, we would have won at least 4-6 more games than we have to date. Oh well, just proud of the women for not throwing in the towel which they could have easily done this year. Cohen needs to go ahead and check the WBB HC job off his to do list. The Coach is already on the court and doing a great job.
Dawg83
I don’t know that it’s an effort thing with State. I think the roster was poorly constructed with no true PG and no real shooters, and they’re not particularly well coached. Molinar is very good, the interior duo of Smith and Brooks has been solid. That’s about it though. And it’s not enough for this team to do what it should be doing.
rebmus
Ole Miss lost at home to South Carolina in OT tonight. Kermit's seat is getting warmer. I'm glad I'm not Keith Carter. Fans will want a change but who does KC realistically hire to replace Kermit IF he fires him?

Seems like we keep inventing new ways to lose, but truth is the same reasons just cycle themselves through - scoring droughts, lack of rebounding on the defensive end, no point guard, not much rim protection, head scratching moments that even the basketball novice can spot and left wondering why. At any rate, Kermit gets another year, let's just be real about that. If we don't lose 60 percent of our starting 5 next year during the season like we have this year and we don't do far better then it's definitely time to kick the tires on a new coach. It would just be time from a fan excitement/interest standpoint. It was painfully obvious by that crowd and the energy in the building last night that the support has moved on to baseball during the very moment in the season when things are supposed to be most exciting. Wcchaingang
I can see KC giving Kermit another year with all the injuries. But it wouldn’t surprise me to see him make a change either. He might want to go in a different direction.
rebmus
Right now, I think it's 50/50 Kermit is back next year. I don't know the attendance last night, but was told it was pretty bad. If the losses and bad attendance continues, the chances of KC making a move increases. Personally, I'd give Kermit another year... but I don't get a vote. rebmus
MSU lost again tonight. Howland has a better record than Kermit this year, but I'd wager Howland's seat is hotter.

I would not be shocked to see a “retirement” announced before the regular season is over.
