Region 3 5 and Region 4 5a

Well now that its a new year, its never too early to start looking ahead to next season.  Picayune will no doubt be the odds on favorite to repeat and rightfully so. After that there is 8 other teams in there who are about as evenly matched as you can get.

Region 3 is going to pretty much be a carbon copy of last season. 5 good teams looking to fill 4 spots. In no certain order they are

Brookhaven

Hattiesburg

Laurel

Wayne Co

West Jones

Natchez

South Jones

Florence.

Region 4

Picayune

Gautier

East Central

George Co

Vancleave

Pearl River Central

West Harrison

Long Beach

Region 4 is how I think that will play out. Region 3 just too unpredictable to try and pick who will be in the top 4

West Jones may struggle next year. Lost 1 senior D lineman before the season started.  Lost best defender/overall player to injury and he was a senior. Will lose 3 other defensive starters, and 2 or 3 on the O line, and top 2 RB's.  But due to injury and covid throughout the year they ended up rotating so many kids into starting positions here and there they had only 7 players that started every game.  Almost 40 that started here and there.  So they will have experience to fill the losses but those 2 big ones on defense hurt.  Also some likely coaching changes will disrupt things.

Who plans on leaving?

Word is Coach Pierson is retiring. It came out during last baseball season that 2021 would be it for it.  Before the Christmas break I was told he was awaiting an audit to see if he did (which he should have) had his time in.

From what I’ve gathered, Region 3-5A will look something like this IMO.

1. Wayne County

2. Laurel

3. Hattiesburg

4. West Jones

5. Brookhaven

6. South Jones

7. Natchez

8. Florence

Wayne County returns a lot, including a very good QB and RB. Their new head coach turned the culture around quick. I haven’t seen this kind of energy from them in a long time.

Laurel has one of the best offensive lines in the state. They lost their stud running back from last year and a couple of good receivers, but a lot of guys can run behind that line. 2 good QBs. One of them plays WR also and is very dangerous with the ball in his hands. Athletes all over the field on both sides of the ball.

Hattiesburg has one of the best linebackers in the state in Tabias Hinton. The defense should be nasty. A lot like Laurel as far as athletes go. Their QB is gonna be a sophomore this year and he is supposed to be the real deal.

West Jones lost a good bit, but they aren’t done. They have a couple of really good defensive players left including a MLB with multiple D1 offers. Dual-Threat QB returns, but they’ve got to have some receivers emerge. Offensive line will be solid, but they will have a new starter with almost no experience at RB.

Brookhaven is probably the only real threat to push for that 4th spot. They beat Laurel last year, but I think they are a step behind.

South Jones will be better. Todd Breland is too good not to get that thing rolling. They could have a winning record.

Natchez and Florence are young. They probably won’t be very competitive.

Putting us over Laurel and West Jones is a reach, IMO. To go from missing the playoffs to winning that region would be a mammoth achievement. I would love it if we did.
Like you said that oline for Laurel and you know West will have a defense that will shut down the run. Laurel beat them in the playoffs because they could throw it. Can we ?

Honestly our offense looked like an ongoing project last month in poplarville.

There are still a lot of moving pieces, but from spending time with all the programs this summer, that’s how I see it. WC missed the playoffs, but lost three region contests by a combined 9 points with a mountain of injuries and a new head coach. If WC had beaten West last year, they would have been the No. 1 seed. Plus, WC returns more than everyone.

Folks in Waynesboro should be excited. Wayne County has a phenomenal head coach and a bunch of talent.

wc is on the right path again for sure. they will be very good.

im not sure if they return more than everyone or not but they return a lot.

There are a lot of returning starters returning on just about every team in Region 3 this season from top to bottom.

You can’t get Deonte away from the house to watch a game. I think he’s got the same Friday night dilemma as Dub. They can’t get away from the women. The season is fast approaching, I’m expecting you to make it to one this season.

Lmao, I will for sure.

George Co.  has a sophomore QB who's already receiving offers. Stepped in as a freshman last year and lit it up (SR qb injured).  Lost a couple key skill guys, Trent Howell will be at Jones and Mojo Dortch I believe Starkville.  Won't be able to rattle this one like your average sophomore.  OL will have to protect him.  East Central has a new HC.  Good man who has waited his turn and I think they'll be fine.  I don't do predictions, but I feel both these teams are playoff bound.  In the district with Picayune, so district champs may be a stretch for both.
