This was talked about at lunch today, no idea how much truth to it and haven't looked around online to verify.

Supposedly Sanders has some connection with Barstool Sports and this kid was offered a NIL over $1 million.

Either way, I figure Sanders will be a P5 coach the next hiring cycle. Imagine if he's hired by Auburn... would him and/or Saban stop doing the Aflac commercials together because of the rivalry? The obvious first guess is he waits on the FSU job... as long as it's open within the next 2 years.

I read $1.5m from Barstool Sports.

This has nothing to do with Sanders or any other school or player, but is there even such a thing as a recruiting violation now?

Kids can't be offered a NIL to sign with any certain school (wink wink). I mean, how does anyone really prove that? It's pretty obvious this young man was offered a huge NIL to sign with JSU, but I'm sure the wording is good enough to get around the rules.

The NFL has a proven model that has worked for years... free agency and salary caps.

I've always been for the players getting paid in college, the NCAA drug their feet too long on how to do it and now have been forced to allow it by the SCOTUS.

So far, it's been entertaining to watch unfold.

I actually had an SEC coach tell me that “they” are giving the players X amount right off the bat.

I didn’t ask, but I was under the impression that the schools couldn’t have anything to do with it.

That's my impression also, schools can't have anything to do with it.

Where is the line though? I graduated from Ole Miss, does that mean I can't offer an athlete some NIL money to sign with Ole Miss? I suspect it's fine for me to do that, it just can't be offered from the coaching staff at Ole Miss or any other Ole Miss employee?

I would imagine there are just as many players in the transfer portal looking for more NIL than looking for PT.

I think you are correct on that. Playing time isn't a guarantee, and these players THINK NIL offers are a guarantee... I lean towards there are a lot of promises and few actual signed contracts on these NIL deals which makes those far from a guarantee also.

I think there’s a good chance Deion is a Power 5 head coach within a year or so, maybe even at Florida State. But as long as he’s at JSU, you now have to wonder how much competition he is going to be for top in-state recruits. Maybe this kid he signed yesterday was a unique case but it certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. If he can sign that kid, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he signs an in-state player that State and Ole Miss both really want. And I’ll be honest, did not think that was a possibility before yesterday.

If he is there for a while I think he will sign a shocker or 2 a year. For some kids the history that comes with being at a HBCU and the chance to play for him is a great recruiting tool. Especially if you are a DB. I seen people act like they were legit upset that the kid signed with JSU. And it completely blows my mind that someone would act like that.

That will be determined in time. He certainly has the ability to recruit. But coaching those recruits is entirely different matter. In fairness to him, COVID has completely complicated things over the last two years.
So far though, he seems to have made a good impact at JSU. Going forward over next 2-3 years will tell the tale as far as what his staying power might be.

The next five - ten years in CFB are going to be interesting to see how all this shakes out after the dust settles.

I think eventually in football there is going to be four major conferences with 16 teams each. Then there will possibly be a 16 team playoff utilizing some of the existing bowls as part of their make up. Instead of March Madness you will have a football madness in November/December leading up to January.

I think we still don’t know that yet.  He’s just two years into coaching and one of those as the Covid year.

We do know he can recruit though.  He could very well get a top recruit from Mississippi.  If he stays a few years, it will be highly probable. However, I believe most recruit want to play in the SEC over the SWAC.

Stone Blanton. That one is just such a weird story with crazy online talk.

As I understand the story:

Stone was committed to MSU in baseball, no football offer a year (maybe 2?) ago. Stone rose up the football rankings at LB this past year and had football offers from multiple schools including Ole Miss (not sure if MSU ever offered him in football).

Stone kept sticking with his baseball commit to MSU and slow played everyone in football offers.

Ole Miss feels pretty good about another LB supposedly committing so they basically "ghosted" Stone since he never had committed verbally for football.

It appears OM and MSU both felt a football offer was better spent elsewhere.

Shane Blanton (Stone's brother, I think?) blew up on twitter this weekend about Ole Miss not sticking with the original offer to Stone.

It's quite possible I'm missing something, but it appears OM was interested and Stone slow played them so they kept looking around. MSU wanted him for baseball but didn't want him enough to offer a football scholarship (this part is more unclear, but how I heard the story).

Whatever happened, best of luck to the young man at USCe. We'll see if he makes Ole Miss and/or MSU regret not going after him harder.

You know Blanton got his very first offer from Lane Kiffin as a freshman when Kiffin was at FAU. Wouldn’t have been hard to get him to Ole Miss. Sad

I don't have any doubt Ole Miss (and MSU also) could have signed Blanton had they wanted to. It appears both coaches decided he wasn't a priority.

It happens, best of luck to him.

Bo Nix is headed to Oregon,  Ewers to Texas,  Rattler to S Carolina, Gabriel to UCLA, Max Johnson to A&M.   Those are just QBs.  Keeping up with the transfer portal may be as exciting as watching bowl games.

At what point does Kiffin just roll with Altmyer? I mean I get that we live in a “win now” world but I think there’s benefit to being patient with a young QB and letting him develop naturally (see Will Rogers). Plus OM’s schedule next year is REALLY light on the front end, whoever the next guy is will have plenty of time to get ready before Ole Miss sees any team that can challenge them.

I much prefer bringing a player along and getting to know the guy. As long as it's not a disaster.
