So what's going to happen when Holmes County Central runs into West Point?

Not having Picayune or West Point ranked pretty much makes this poll laughable. Considering what West Jones lost on defense and having them at No.2 is even more laughable. Having them in top 10 is fine. But second best team in the state to start the season, no way.

I also think South Panola would beat Holmes County Central in a head-to-head matchup even though they are in different classifications.  I'm also fine with us not being in any ranked poll for the time being.  We've got a tough game right out of the gate against Brandon, so we'll get to see what kind of intestinal fortitude we are made of real quick.

We’ll find out week four if Holmes County is a contender or a pretender when they take on Neville. That will be the best team they play all year in the regular season. Neville will have a good running attack and the two teams that gave Holmes County a tough time last year were West Point and Florence. Both games Holmes County was unable to stop the run. Later in the season I think Cleveland Central could put up a good test. I have them as my 5A sleeper. I never jump on the Holmes County hype train because it hasn’t panned out, but I do think this is the best team they’ve put on the field since becoming Holmes County.

While understandably opinionated … not exactly your best work

Given the metrics and the eye tests, I feel like Hattiesburg should probably be preseason top 10 somewhere.  I just have this feeling they will be really good this year (or lest they should be).

Who will be this year’s Winona? A small school that runs through their classification while also pulling off a big win against a state championship caliber higher classification team. My money is on Noxubee County. They should have one of the most explosive offenses in the state with KaMario Taylor working on getting that fifth star. I’ve always respected that no matter what they don’t shy away from the likes of Louisville, West Point and Starkville. Games like that have them fully prepared once playoffs roll around. Them and Choctaw County put on an entertaining spring game which I think will be a preview of what’ll be the 3A state championship game.

Yeah, West Jones probably too high. They may have a top 5 offense, returning the QB and both RBs, but still have to fill some spots

on the O-line. The defense will be the key this year. How well can they improve during the regular season?

But in EFBs defense, you have to incorporate last years results into these pre-season polls until some games are played.

You can't base this solely on the potential of the returning players, unless those returning players made a deep run last year in the playoffs.

There are certain teams that for some reason, we keep hearing year after year after year,  that this will be their year, and they

go out in the 1st or 2nd rounds every year.

Re. Hartfield, they have 4 of the most highly recruited players in the state at their 2 defensive tackles and 2 outside receivers. But, there's a steep talent drop off after that. Hartfield lost its entire offensive line, its All-American linebacker, and its best overall player, Jeslowski. It is far too premature to label them better than the MRA and Prep, much less a top 10 overall team in the state.

You make a strong point since Hartfield did lose their OL and best overall player, but I also think it’s rightfully justified to have them in the top ten. Like someone said above it’s hard to make polls like these by only really having last year to go off of. You’re basically only going off potential of returners. However it’s hard to overlook that one of the kids returning, Simmons that’s committed to Bama, had 6 sacks in a 21-0 state championship shutout and Womack WR/#1S Notre Dame commit put up 100+ yards receiving and a TD. How many other schools have four D1 guys that could produce as freshmen once they make it on campus? One of those WR’s you mentioned also happens to be the #1 safety in the country for the 2026 class that I mentioned above. Hartfield should have one of the best defenses in the state and I’m sure the offense will progress as the year goes on. They still return Tapper at QB and 2 WR’s that could be 1,000 yard guys. Within the academies, I’d easily put them at the top. Prep also has some production they have to replace and MRA has to figure out life without White leading the way.

Holmes County has one of the most talented teams. Every year like clockwork, they get out coached in the playoffs. Talent only takes you so far.

True! West Point is coming into the season with one of the better defenses that they've had in years IMO. They look very fast and physical. Even in the secondary

Might be the best team (on paper) Vance has ever had. If they do not make some serious noise this year, I am not sure if they ever will.

I completely agree about this being preseason guesswork. Nobody really knows.

No one can reasonably disagree about the talents of Womack, West, Simmons, or Cornbread. Assuming all of these guys play both ways, that's only 2 players on each side of the ball. All I'm saying is that it takes 11 players on each side. Over the past two years, Hartfield was only as good as its running game allowed. Without Reed Jeslowski (that kid is a very, very good player and I will be stunned if he doesn't do exceedingly well at USM) and that o-line, Hartfield will be a fundamentally different team. Have they been able to hit the portal this offseason with the same vigor now that Jenkins isn't there to bankroll everything? We'll see.

Compare the returning production at Hartfield with that of Prep. Prep returns its entire offensive line, its QB, its entire RB room, and its best overall player - Major Quin. It is only replacing a TE and WR, and the replacements for those players are equal to or better than what they had before. Prep has 3 kids committed to play D1, the best QB in the league, and a significant edge in coaching. Where it becomes more interesting is in the ranks of kids who will not play in college, which is the bulk of all high school teams. Who has the better players there? As far as I know, Prep.

Similar things can be said about MRA. MRA has a really good WR group, it picked up JA's top two skill players (and entirely different discussion) at LB/RB (AJ Parker-10.7 100) and all purpose (DJ Watkins-best overall player at JA by a wide margin and a D1 talent), and it too has top notch coaching. It is fair to question how the team will click without White, but I suspect the QB position will be just fine.

The most reasonable assessment of the comparative strength of the teams at this early stage is that they're all equal. But hey - it's the summer; we all miss football; and this is fun. Who cares? Can't wait for mid-August to arrive.

I personally think they have to.  And given the scenarios I think the opportunity is ripe for them.  I know that once Hattiesburg hits the playoffs it's always a crapshoot, but it just can't be this time.  They need to make the most of it.  It's been 100 years since they last won a state title and it's (past) time for that drought to end.

I dont hate WP I picked them to win 5a last year just think with Chambless gone and losing everyone on offense their run is over. Everyones run ends sometime.

Cham is gone but Morgan has been running the offense and he's the HC. Cham was a DC before he became the HC. The peewee all the way to the jr high is running this offense. The run is far from over. Especially with 7 classifications and watering down things.

In Clay County you either go to West Point or Oak Hill. Oh yeah word is that Cham is working with the 9th grade so we're fine over here

Ya'll pretty much do the same thing we do.  They start learning the offense in peewee and play it all the way to varsity.  It can't be more plug and play than that.  You just have to rotate your stock.  It's a machine for a reason.
