As good as Kiffin’s scheme is, I think OM is suffering from poor OL play and receivers that are fine but nothing special. You need more than OK to beat Bama.

I said it last week, OL is just not playing well at all for Ole Miss so far this year.

The receivers looked good enough before Harris got hurt. Harris did play a tad today but certainly not playing at full strength.

Dart got killed today and showed a ton of toughness coming back after getting hit so much, same for Milroe... he got hit a ton in the first half and just kept getting up for more.

Dart and Milroe both had one bad decision with the INTs, but overall I was impressed with both of them for not giving up.

I felt OM was a 7-8 win team this season which is certainly still very possible.

..............

I said I didn't like my Auburn pick either way but dang... A&M blew them up. Auburn's secondary looked pretty dang bad today.

State loses a high scoring game 37-30. Offense finally got some things going but this defense has major issues right now.

I stand corrected on my anti-Will Rogers sentiments, he showed tonight that he can be a good QB.

I actually leave the night feeling a little better about State than I did going into it, I really thought this had a chance to be a 3 or 4 win team after last week. Tonight at least gives me some optimism for the second half of the schedule post-Bama, a lot of toss ups in October and November. But they’ve got some defensive holes that I don’t know if can be fixed with this group of players.

That’s insane.

Rogers had a boatload of yards, but their WRs look like they aren’t sure what routes to run.   It seems to frustrate Rogers.

Yeah offense is still a work in progress but overall tonight was a step in the right direction on that side of the ball.

I don’t know if Arnett just totally whiffed on his DC hire or if they misevaluated what they needed from the portal or what it is, but there no reason for State to be this bad on defense. Daniels and Rattler are good but State made them both look like Heisman winners.

That’s not good.  Hall was catching a lot of heat on social media last week for losing back to back to good teams.  Ark State is not a good team.

USM is far from an easy job in 2023 but I really thought Hall would’ve had more success by now.

I was more impressed with Oregon today than USC so far.   I look for a much closer game next week between USC and Colorado in Boulder than we saw earlier today with Oregon and Colorado.

USC looks like they could be the 3rd or 4th best team in the Pac12.  Washington and Washington State can score some points.

Oregon and Washington are both really good and they play in Seattle in a few weeks. I think Penix legitimately could win the Heisman.

Some things I’ve pondered on Kiffin/OM here recently:

It’s clear that OM fans generally love the guy, or have for most of his time there. He’s won a lot more games than OM was winning the few years before he arrived, the offense is fun, he’s a character that plays to the culture of his fan base, I get it.

But at what point do OM fans start to get fed up with his schtick? Are we getting close to that? I realize he’s only lost once this year but he’s now 2-6 in his last 8 games against P5 teams, and the two wins were Georgia Tech and a bad Texas A&M. I cannot get over the $9M contract for those kind of results. Arnett’s got issues and he may not be the guy, but he’s a heck of a lot cheaper, if nothing else.

What is the Kiffin signature win at Ole Miss? I’m asking because I really don’t know. He’s beaten some decent teams but I can’t think of anything that really stands out.

And then the whole Dan Mullen-esque job shopping angle is an entirely different layer to this. I don’t know how you can have much confidence Kiffin won’t do it again.

I don't know how many OM fans you know personally, but those around me have said from Day 1 that if Kiffin can win, we can tolerate his fairly high level of "weirdness," but at no point have any said we love the guy. I've also said since the day it happened, that $9 million was a ridiculous amount for us to pay a coach. And as for him job shopping, it's without a doubt the reason we were drummed so badly by a weak Arkansas team last year and lost at home to an inferior State team. If he wants to do that again, he can walk, which is something else I've said since it happened last year. And none of this has anything to do with our performance this past weekend. I never thought we'd win that game.

With the conference additions next year, you wonder if Kiffin hit his ceiling for OM in 2021.  State fans heard the same about Mullen in 2014.  All fans want to believe their school can turn into Bama or Georgia or even Clemson, but odds are it’s not happening.  When a coach looks at Florida and Texas A&M recruiting at a high rate year in and out while having on the field results behind what State and OM have, it probably creeps in their mind that it may be easier at another school.

On the flip side, if he can keep wining 8+ games a year AND earn $9m/year in Oxford, it would be hard to leave.  He did seem kinda devastated that they didn’t get Bama in a down year.  Some fans are chirping about his pay and they seem to think they have unlimited NIL funds.  They’re desperate for a trip to the SECG.  Of course an upset win over LSU would make everything better, which is possible.

Might just be me, but I will be shocked if Ole Miss doesn’t lose at least one of these next two games at home. And they could lose both. I feel like the post-Bama letdown potential is high for both games.

They'll likely get up to play LSU, and sure that’s a winnable game for OM. I personally think LSU is the better team and probably wins, but they’re barely a favorite according to Vegas (line is LSU -2.5 as of now). But then whatever happens there, you immediately get Arkansas the next week, which has become annually one of my favorite games in college football because of all the bananas stuff that tends to happen. If that’s not a letdown spot then I don’t know what is.

Pivotal couple of weeks for Ole Miss, you feel like they need to win at least one of those next two. The conversation might be really awkward if Kiffin follows up the end of last season with an 0-3 start in conference play.

^^^ I couldn't agree more.

On State, I keep thinking of how we’ve seen four games and almost four entirely different offensive styles. I have no idea what exactly Barbay’s identity is. It clearly worked better this week but they were still terrible running the ball and I know he tends to be more of a run first OC.

That was the first game in his entire career where I feel like State really unleashed Tulu, and man it was pretty special. I actually think State’s top 3-4 receivers are pretty dang good. The problem the first three games was State’s unwillingness to push the ball down the field, against SC, even in a relatively good offensive showing, the OL had some pretty notable pass protection issues. Probably gonna be a major issue against Bama.

I hate to say it but the TE position for State is just a lost cause this year. Spivey being ineligible was possibly a much bigger blow than anyone realized. The Georgia transfer has struggled mightily. When your TE’s can’t block and you don’t throw it to them…. Why play a TE?

For all the pub he's gotten, Kiffin still hasn't beaten anyone with a pulse on the national scene yet. He fits Ole Miss to a tee and seems as if he's lived there his entire life.

The best Kiffin win I can think of was beating A&M a couple of years ago when they hosted College Gameday. But even that was an 8-4 A&M team that State also beat. Beat LSU once but it was a bad LSU team.

At Tennessee? Good win, but UT went on to finish 7-6. Kentucky last year, same thing.

Maybe it’s beating Indiana in the bowl game his first year? Maybe it’s beating Arkansas in the crazy game a couple of years ago?

You see my point though. And to be fair, he does have two more chances this year to get a signature when against LSU or Georgia, so let’s see how those go. But to this point I don’t know that he has a signature win.
