I just don’t see this happening the MAIS or MHSAA will not lose money. So I can’t see the MAIS giving up their crazy playoff Powe point system with two champions in each class not to count their eight man teams.

No way would MAIS consider that, especially with the multiplier.

7 classes have given us 5 team regions with 1-9 records making the playoffs. With all the open dates this year its going to be some 1-8 records in the playoffs. Right now in 2A you have 4 team regions all 4 in the playoffs and yes 0-10 goes as a 4 seed. In 1A north you have appx 10 nonfootball schools out of roughly 24 or so. That means you have 6 team regions with up to 3 non football teams in the region. Somewhere 1 seeds get buys now. 1A set up has to change or simply go back to 4 regions maybe 6 regions if it can be worked out fairly. With 6 there will be some buys. At least those schools get back to 10 game seasons and not 8 game seasons. 6 classes were better. 5 classes is probably where we need to be even if it leaves 3 teams per region at home. And now we have coaches that won't schedule certain teams or certain coaches for what ever reason. Like Forest dropping Raleigh  or Bay Springs dropping Raleigh because the excuse was in Spring of 25 that Raleigh players hurt us then you schedule a team 3 hours away. Coaches have got to get tougher in some areas. Consolidation is or will happen over time. Nothing you can do but grow your county or your town.

The only way we can openly save the 7 classes and 10 game schedules is to schedule one week out of the year that 4A-1A schedule 1 MAIS opponent. Enough of this 10 schools every Friday with an open date. 8 or 9 game MHSAA schedules already killing the bank accounts of schools.Otherwise we go back to 5 or 6 classes. Then if you have 150 kids in high school and or 55% boys to 45% girls you either play football or play a consolidated county football team especially in 1A NE MS.

Dang Bert that’s the most I ever seen you write.

It could be fixed. If like I said every game is a region game. What these people that came up with the system that is in place now. have done is to make the regular season irrelevant.

Now the question becomes is why?
Did someone in that room point out what it would do?
Is it done for money?

Is it done unfairly I might add to nudge certain school districts into the playoffs where they couldn’t do it much before? This is a move.Bubba Hathorne would have proposed.

Was it done this way because someone suggested let’s try to save the districts a little gas money?  A thought only the most simplest of minds would make.

My thought there is a disconnect in the way they view football for school districts then what the kids the parents and people that follow it like we do. They approach it as just another extra curricular activity and aren’t really concerned with the best team winning.

Whatever their thought process is it’s too secretive and clandestine for my taste.. Having to hide things is a red flag that they know what they are doing is not beneficial to the public.

It wasn’t very long ago we were playing eight team regions and things were much better. Just think back to when WC was 4A and 5A. When you made the playoffs you were in for a dogfight because playoffs lasted longer. Now two rounds of playoff football that’s a joke.

Well it got watered down by default because you had more district games and fewer non-district games with fewer classifications.  Make it mean something again.  I think that’s what people want.  Also these extremely bad football teams that make the playoffs doesn't help matters either.  Making the playoffs needs to be a reward for doing well in district play.

We all use to play the last 4-5 regular season games fighting for a region championship or seeding. It would be WC, Picayune, Laurel, WJ and Hattiesburg those were the days lol

Gotta have one non region game. No way you discontinue the Little Brown Jug game between Hattiesburg/Laurel. Thats like losing $80,000 if its wasnt played. Its the biggest gate game of the season for the home team.

We get it by now. You are heavily invested in that

jug.Maybe you could offer a suggestion on a solution or maybe you have some knowledge on why the regular season was neutered. There are other threads we can go back-and-forth in and believe me there’s some stuff in them that I could dig into. I want to keep this discussion about the failure now that we all have.

Let’s save the trip back to win cheerleaders skirts, went past their ankles for another discussion..

thanks

You are definitely right. I am invested in the Little Brown Jug game. Been attending it for 50 of my 56 yrs on this earth. And yes the regular season right now is not what it used to be witb 7 classes and 2-8 teams making the playoffs. But I would rather have that than have 105yrs of tradition just thrown away.

Multiplier I think would go away with a merger.  I think its scheduling and other intangibles that take place ar facilities when a team plays on the road. Maybe some of yalk are little too aggressive with cheering when they play MHSAA schools.

They did it to get more money off of playoff games and to some degree appease coaches wanting desperately to coach in the playoffs. It didn't work for 1A because 4 regions were enough. 4A-2A now has many open dates. 40 schools in a class should mean 4 regions. 48 schools in a class and you get 8 regions. Some schools are at 1 or 2 open dates and appx 10 schools some weeks are open. They won't play a school open 20 miles down the road. What ever they come up with in the future it should be a minimum of 6 schools per region all classes.

IN 5A/6A you will always have dates available for a jug and a gator hunting trip for those 2 schools.

In 4A-1A can now go 4 regions top 8 make the playoffs. 2 stay at home probably will likely be the same 2.

7 classes was brought uo at annual meeting as I recall on the coast. I think it originated out of a district 5 annual meeting which Bubba was a part of at one time.

That loser wrecks everything he touches and he’s never been held accountable for the destruction he has left in his wake.

I have heard the increased revenue angle brought up before. It’s my belief that any uptick in revenue is more than lost by decreased attendance in the regular season.

Do they get a larger share of the gate for playoff games than regular season?

Ive heard after they pay out fees for the officials the MHSAA gets 30% of the gate.
