Until the R4 teams beat R3 teams in 7A, I just can’t buy that Gulfport and Ocean Springs are better than Petal and OG. Especially when OG already beat Gulfport pre-season

Og beat gport in a jamboree. That dont count

@Vottdo you think Goula can beat the #1 seed from Region 3 in the second round?  Because that would be the only path for us to face them again.

I think if Goula HHS Picayune and WJ all make it to round 2 anyone can beat anyone and go to south state and state. In fact I think all 4 could possibly win it all.

I also think homefield advantage is kind of a non-factor as well.  Playing on the road seems to have been the norm this year, especially for Hattiesburg and Picayune.  When Picayune plays PRC tomorrow night, it will only be the 4th home game of the year.

For South 7A, I think you have Petal, Gulfport, Ocean Springs and Oak Grove as the 4 with a real shot. d'Iberville is a streaky team that can surprise someone if they overlook them. I think a coast 7A has a real shot to represent the south in Starkville this year. Not saying they will, but this is probably the best chance if any to make it happen.

For South 6A, I sort of agree with Vott. Picayune, Hattiesburg, Pascagoula, and West Jones are all talented enough in my opinion to come out of the south and win it all. If they win their 1st round matchups, those 2nd round ones should be FUN.

If your definition of "FUN" is anxiety to the max, then I'll probably need the anesthetic administered by Moe, Larry, & Curly. LOL

Playoffs are a new season

More often than not if you meet up with someone again in the playoffs that you played in the regular season, the team that lost in the regular season seems to get their lick back in the playoffs. When Hattiesburg and Laurel were both 5a ( 6a was still the biggest classification) they met in the playoffs after HHS had won the regular season game. Playoffs came around and Laurel whipped us pretty good.

Officially, you’re right. No - it doesn’t count. But let’s not forget history.

For the largest MHSAA classification, R4 is almost always weaker than R3 when it all comes down in playoffs. Now, there are some limited round 1 or 2 exceptions. HOWEVER... on the overall, history suggests that the R3 schedules better prepare those teams for playoff wins. This is evidenced by which regions are represented in the state championship game. I cannot find a coast team that has played in the largest classification of the MHSAA state championship game for 2 decades - be it 5A, 6A or 7A (I only searched back 20 years, but I feel like a generation’s worth of evidence is enough to lend credibility to the statement.)

But if I’m betting on a OG/Gulfport matchup (i don’t bet), I’m taking OG. Gulfport has not beat OG in over 20 years. Records I’m looking at go back to 2003 and there is no Gulfport win recorded.

Again, anything is possible. But I’ll go with R3 in the largest classification just about every time. Nobody from R4 has even made an appearance in the championship game from South State in almost 2 decades.

I would have to look, but I think Oceans Springs played South Panola in like 2004 or somewhere about that time

You should be telling yourself that. You said that OG beat Gulfport in a jamboree like that matters at all

Look, the data is there.

Tell yourself whatever you want.

We’re all about to find out which region is most prepared to run the gauntlet in playoffs. I’ll stand by my predictions until proven wrong

18 years but I seem to recall Pascagoula 1 year not sure what class.

2012 Pascagoula played Starkville in the championship game, but not in the largest class. They were 5A at the time and MHSAA had 6 classifications in 2012. The 6A game that year was South Panola vs Brandon.

And yes, Ocean Springs (2004) and George County (2007) have each made one trip to the ship in the last 22 years. The other 20 appearances have come from Brandon, Petal, OG and Pearl.
