MSSportsGuy
Tate County in Northwest Mississippi has approved the closure of Coldwater High. Presumably students will attend Strayhorn or Independence. They haven't had much luck in athletics for many years but this leaves only 3 schools in their football division. I wonder if they will be reexamined. The number of 1A schools will keep dropping gradually which is another reason I think 7 classes is silly but it's here. maroontide06
I'm not that familiar with North Mississippi, but this town is just South of Memphis and right on I-55. Shouldn't this be a thriving suburb of Memphis? For this school to close makes absolutely no sense. Heck their football stadium even has a nice track around it. Why does Mississippi need more blight? Don't we already have enough?

You are not a fan of the 7 classes. You have mentioned it several times since it was announced. LOL. I am just messing with you. This is an interesting development to keep an eye on in the future. With all of the possible school closures and consolidations. It may make sense to go back to 6 or 5 classes.

I just wonder what will happen in a district with 3 teams, schools who only have 2 district games trying to fill a schedule of 10 games. Actually, I wonder why it made sense to go from 4 regions in 1A football back to 8.

Tate County schools built a high school in Strayhorn, which only had K-8, in the mid 2000s and it dropped the Coldwater population. The student body demographics changed and the enrollment has continued to drop. I haven't been to their football stadium but the high school building was allegedly built in 1958. Frankly I think the age of facilities in many places will be what forces the hands of consolidation for some communities.

It's got to be a similar situation when Carroll County shut down Vaiden High School and the kids that went there had to start going to JZ George in North Carrollton. It'll probably make for some long driving to get to school.
MSSportsGuy
No doubt it will increase travel for some but Tate isn't a large county geographically so it won't be the same as in some areas. Consolidation will keep taking place and I truly don't think there will be any new public high schools built in the state due to overcrowding in the next twenty years. Well Carroll is pretty big (land wise not population wise). It's one of the few counties in Mississippi with two county seats, but that's just an example of something similar that has happened in the past. maroontide06
Hopefully the MHSAA will see the error in their ways one day and bring us back down to 6 classifications, but unfortunately it's all about the almighty dollar for them so that won't be happening any time soon.
Rebel Bert
This decision should have been made in time for reclassification. Not sure but now Strayhorn may have enough students to move up a class. Independence I am not sure.
Rebel Bert
Independence 255. needed 88 to tie for last in 4A Strayhorn 151 needed 6 to tie for last in 2A So 96 needed for both schools to jump to 4A/2A. Coldwater had 93. Not hard to figure it out that Strayhorn should be 2A easily.
Rebel Bert
Judge approved pending board approval of deciding whether I-55 or Hwy 51 will be the dividing line. Of course Strayhorn is in the west and Independence in the east.
Rebel Bert
Strayhorn would go to 2A Region 2. Water Valley to Region 4 replacing Sebastopol going to 1A. Leflore County could be in play.

The closure had to be approved by a federal judge due to the fact Tate County is still under a desegregation order. The board voted to close the school but the feds had to let them move forward. Nothing related to athletic reclassification was considered, nor should it be. no clue what the association will do but we will just have to see how it’s handled. MSHSFootballFan
Hate to see this. Home of Trell Kimmons, the Coldwater Comet. Also home of the late Kamala, the Ugandan Giant, and current Atlanta Brave Austin Riley. I think…don’t know…they used to play some good basketball and baseball back in the day. Don’t recall ever hearing much about the football teams.

Almost like Strayhorn will play 1A with 2A numbers unless the association backtracks and adjust the classes and regions.

Also, football team has an all-time winning percentage of 33% with only 17 winning seasons since 1950 Edited December 17, 2022 by Arashatora
maroontide06
If this school was out in the middle of nowhere where you have to pump daylight in, they might could justify closing it but my goodness this town is right on the Interstate. Scary times we are living in for sure.

He's building a big house somewhere out from Hernando. I read it as played there for some reason. Bruce or Water Valley could take Sebastopol place which drops back to 1A. Then the 1A shuffle starts again. I believe they get put with Taylorsville, Stringer, Mt Ilive, Leake County. Then again the association forfeits to 2024 because the decision occurred after Reclassification.
s1nglewing
Most schedules are already complete for 2023/24. Revising regions at this point would create more issues than resolve.
