Auburn to the SEC East.

Recommended Posts

So I've figured out that AU is being sent to the SEC East by process of elimination now that the SEC has officially extended an offer to both OU & UT. Obviously the Iron Bowl will stay in tact. Auburn instantly becomes a contender with both UF and UGA for the Eastern Div title in the process IMOP.

 Thoughts?

Moving 1 team instead of 3 makes the most sense to me b/c Alabama and AU could remain playing the Iron bowl regardless of which half of the conference either team finds themselves in. Mizz could easily make a nice fit in the West but I would elect to move a single team instead of 3.

SEC office will do whatever situation forecasts the most ca$h. Mullen and Kirby won't like it but they should just draw a line right up and down the MS / AL border.  Teams on the right go to the east and the ones on the left are west teams. But it wouldn't surprise me if they do something wild and put Jimbo and the aggies in the east either.

Which means Auburn and Bama could possibly play on back to back weekends if they are both in the SEC championship

I also feel that the SEC would be better balanced strength wise from one division to the next with only the addition of AU to the East and not both AU as well as UA.

Eh, these things change back and forth over years either way.

LSU is licking their chops if UA and AU move East on paper. That leaves LSU as the top dog in the West. Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M etc just aren't where LSU is year after year.

LSU did have the amazing 2019 season, but I don’t think they are any better than Oklahoma and Texas year in and out.

I think division’s are toast now.

They will go to 4 - 4 team quads. Conference schedule will be 9 games.
Best record wins the SEC and if two are tied then a tie breaker mechanism will be used.

Why, you ask?

With the playoff going to 12 or possibly 16 teams, there is no need in playing an extra game.
These will be the quads or something similar:

Quad East-UF, UGA, USCe, UK

Quad Central-Bama, AUB, UT, Vandy

Quad River-State, OM, LSU, Arky

Quad SW-A&M, TX, OK, Mizzou

You would play your quad teams yearly and then the other 12 teams two times over a four year period.

That's an interesting option that might help the teams who aren't Alabama, OU, UGA and the like to feel that their school actually has a shot at winning a division title at least every 3 to 4 years. That format might be better for overall fan moral.

This. Also, add in the NIL revenue along with Oklahoma and Texas joining the first "super conference"... those two teams are about to get even better.

Bama is Bama, until things change they'll be the favorite to win the conference and division (no matter if it's East or West) for now... and rightfully so.

OM/MSU better hope for this quad (I've heard it called pod) format with a possible LSU/Arkansas quad/pod rivals. Even then, I don't think our teams can keep up with the money involved.

I think LSU and OU have been stronger in recent history. All three schools have been playing ball since the 1890's. Both OU and UT have north of 900 program wins while LSU has only north of 300. LSU has somehow managed to play roughly 200 less games since about 1893 to 1895 until now than has both OU and UT. Since the exit of Vince Young, I feel that both LSU and OU have been a bit stronger. OU and UT will see an uptick in recruiting as you say and yet their competition will also become increasingly stiff compared to the foes the two routinely met while competing in their prior conference. I agree with most of your commentary and also feel that MSU, UM, USC, VU, UT, Mizz, UK and Arkansas would all benefit from a quad/pod format. MSU, OM or any of the other schools that you or I named aren't required to beat Alabama and the like on a yearly basis in order to achieve a premier program across the college football landscape so that's the good news.

If Auburn moves to the East that means easy 8-9 wins every single year instead of 6-7 wins right now.

I would guess the 4 team split.  And they'll try to arrange them to maximize the potential playoff matchups. They'll want it so that Alabama can face say Texas or Oklahoma in the Championship.  I think LSU will move back to the middle of the pack now.  That one year was the perfect alignment of assistant coaches and QB.
