What you say really rings true because I was told his old high school in Pearl River county tried to get him to come back home. Let's just say he said no thanks. That program has struggled for several years mainly cause they don't have the Jessie's and Joes.

Poor PRC.  They can't get championship winning help even when they ask for it.  Sounds like Jeff Stockstill made a smart choice in that regard.

Winona’s coach has done a great job, Newton County’s coach has them winning playoff games,  Hamilton’s coach has done a good job. Really depends on what you define “best” as.

Joey definitely does a good job at Winona. He's been blessed with some great talent too, but that's part of it.

There is an argument to be made that recruiting makes the coaching easier, but they do put out a high quality product.

The notion that only private schools recruit is laughable at best. I've heard of plenty of recruiting on the public school side.

In spite of the "argument", Herbert Davis is high on my top list. He's won everywhere he's been. Taken small schools to the big game,. Ricky Black is also a legend. Coach Goodwin is also fantastic from his record in Alabama. Lance Pogue. the Late  Jack Carlisle, Mac Barnes, David Bradberry was also fantastic.

I never said only private schools recruit. They just do it to a higher degree

Earlier today I watched their game from this past Friday night against Water Valley. Very talented team and will have bunch of returning playmakers next year. That QB is dang good. IMO should be the 3A favorite next year. Can’t wait to watch them against Amory tomorrow night.

Yeah they're relatively junior heavy. Gonna be a force next year for sure.

They've got about 45 on the 8th grade team alone. Joey is loaded for the future too.

Glad you mentioned Jack Carlisle.  My dad played for him at Murrah and they had a darn good football program back when he played for them.  It was quite special how Jack was successful everywhere he went.

Anyone mentioned Joe Lin Gant? He had some ungodly talent at Weir but he was a dang good coach too.

Believe it or not he started his career as a junior high football coach and high school track coach at Picayune in the mid '70s after a stellar track decathlon career at Mississippi State. Moved back up to his old stomping ground and well I would say he did alright for himself. Was inducted to Mississippi High School coahes Hall of Fame this summer.

Very interesting.  No wonder the Raiders had good football teams back then.  I'm referring to Picayune Jr. High when I say Raiders because back then they weren't the Maroon Tide like they are now.  The high school and junior high were on opposite campuses and then they switched.  When they made the switch is when the Jr. High became the Maroon Tide like the high school.

Coach Gant was only there for 1 year and he coached 8th grade which was separated from 9th grade. Dodd Lee' s dad Ezell along with Jimmy Hancock had some great 9th grade teams. It is ironic that Dodd Lee and Joe Gant went in Hall of Fame the same year.

Very much so.  I knew Mr. Ezell and I've known Mr. Jimmy my whole life.  That's good people right there.
