s1nglewing Posted November 1, 2022 Author Share Posted November 1, 2022 Natchez Cathedral is open: NATCHEZ — A timeline is loosely set to replace former Cathedral Head Coach Chuck Darbonne by the spring and the Rev. Aaron Williams said he hopes to hire an athletic director by the summer. Craig Beesley retired from the AD position this fall but is continuing to work in the background. Darbonne resigned last week after the end of the football season. Williams said replacing the football coach is the most immediate concern. There is a plan in place for the assistant coaches to lead off-season weight training. He is working to put together a small team to search for the next coach which will include himself and Robin Branton, secondary principal at Cathedral. People who are interested in the position can submit applications through Branton or Williams. The new hire is an exciting process for Cathedral, Williams said. While they are having a good year academically and athletically, cross country just won a state title, they are in a period of change. “It gives me a chance to hire new administrators for athletics and the school to put together my team. They can bring the school to a vision we have,” he said. “At the school we want to build a culture. We are a catholic institution. Our role academically and athletically is to form these kids to be good men and women. At a school like ours, you want programs to have success but also build the kids up.” The next head football coach or athletic director will be someone who is a good role model for student athletes and someone who commands respect. He added the athletic director needs to be someone who can have good interactions with the parents, alumni, benefactors and community members. Ideally, the next head coach needs to have experience in the position. Williams said the goal is to win, he always wants to win, but the program needs to be building the kids up in the right way. Before Cathedral, he walked the sidelines at St. Joseph Catholic in Greenville. “I like to build a winning program. I don’t want to sacrifice it at the standards of behavior and honorability,” he said. “It is exciting to be here on Friday nights. I’m interested in seeing the whole athletic program come together. One weakness I have noticed is the different sports are separate. We need to have a common vision of what we want to do. It will help us build a more effective program. We want to improve our culture. One complaint this past year was about the discipline of the kids. To some extent, that comes to improving the administrative side. It is bitter sweet, but as I’ve heard older coaches say, when you know, you’ll know. This game has been good to me. It’s an exhausting job, both mentally and physically. However, I wouldn’t trade one minute of it for anything in the world. When I was a young coach, I thought it was about the wins. As I grew older, I realized it was about the relationships. Ive watched young men go through adversity, success, and failure. All the while hoping that their time on the football field would prepare them for what they would encounter in life. I’ve enjoyed keeping up with as many as I can. Obviously, I’ve lost track of some, but I know their only a phone call away. They know that as well. The last few years have been tough. It all started with that chicken sandwich from Popeyes, then Covid. I’ve also dealt with my own health issues and the loss of my father. Now I’m gone sit back a minute and relax, then I’m gone get my butt into something. I’ll pop up soon. In the meantime, I’ll finish up at South Jones and help with the transition. There’s a lot I’ll miss. The Locker room, being with the coaches and players. The late nights, body running on caffeine. Yes I’ll miss that too. I won’t miss those hot summer days. I’ll sit in my jeep with the air on and watch, but I will watch. I have to. I love the game. I owe it to the guys who trained me and have moved on. I have to pass that down to the young guys taking my place. I know it’s time, doesn’t make it easy, but the kids deserve more energy that currently I just don’t have. I love the passion of the pine belt as it relates to football. There’s passion here because it matters. I’ve been blessed to work in Jones county most of my career. South Jones, Laurel, Northeast Jones, and yes my student teaching at West Jones. Only once I stepped out for a few wonderful years at Wayne County. 29.5 wonderful years. I have plans for my future. That’ll come out soon. Until then, thank you all for supporting me and at times screaming and cussing me, but most of all loving me. It's going to take a drastic shift in culture to get them back to any amount of success. Their only win this year was against Coffeeville in which they hurt the best player by tackling him and throwing him down on the track a good 8 yards out of bounds. Very crazy situation from what I’m hearing. A lot of jealousy and fragile egos from the administration over the success they had since he’s been there. I was at the game against Tunica Friday and not an administrator in sight to support the players after the loss. Even saw some of the admin smiling and laughing after they lost. But I just know that what that staff has done in 3 years is nothing short of amazing. Taking a team that only averaged 2-3 wins a year and building them up to where they’ve had back to back trips to the semi finals and ultimately changed the culture of a losing program.
