Worst Football Venues

#1 on the list for me is/was Union Academy in Georgetown. The field was very near the Pearl River and a forest, so the mosquitoes were um... prevalent. Salem for similar reasons - an algae covered lake right beside the football field, especially in late summer (August, September) added humidity that you could cut with a butter knife and yes, more mosquitoes than a little bit. Tchula-Marshall's goalposts were made of PVC 😮 and the crossbar sagged.

I forgot to mention Porters Chapel in Vicksburg.  Their field has rocks and fossilized shells all over - a previous coach there told me they were character-makers.

Those fossils are the result of geologists discovered many years ago. The Mississippi Beach towns back then would have been Lorman, Hazlehurst, Florence, Pearl, Sand Hill, Walnut Grove,  Sebastopol, Lake, Sylvarena, SoSo, & Waynesboro. Volcanic eruptions filled in over time. Thus the much discoved oil and gas in South Mississippi.

Natchez hands down had the worst field I’ve seen in twenty years. There were low spots covered in ankle deep weeds and grass . Knocked our best running back out when he hurt his ankle cutting on that crap.

When it rains Laurel’s field gets like potting soil with grass on top of it. It’s been that way for years. It should have been fixed a long time ago. Lot of people like the nostalgia of the bricks but that track keeps you from seeing the action unless they are right in front of you.

For me, I prefer the stadiums like West Jones and the old Brandon stadium. You are right on top of the action. With no tracks and narrow sidelines

Brandon field was illegal. Rule is fence or bleachers have to be 10 feet from sideline and back of endzone.

I’m guessing you’ve never had to work on the sidelines? Give me a track & huge sidelines!

Then how were they playing on it ?

old field they use to play in was ruled illegal with fence home side was to close to side line. The plan was to move the visitor bleachers towards baseball field and adjust field away from said fence. They took bids on the plan and it was more than their new stadium on campus on hwy 18.

Away side fence was far too close too. Myself and Pat “Durwood” Durr had a few collisions on that fence from middle school throughout high school in the mid 2000’s. Actually had a teammate in high school dislocate their shoulder on that fence. If you’re running full speed and meeting the ball carrier on the sideline there was no way you wouldn’t go crashing into it. Good times
