What are the expectations for this upcoming year? Will there be a Bay Springs-Simmons repeat or will there be someone else knocking on the door this year.

There have been a few coaching changes among 1A teams.

Simmons have invested in an indoor multi-use facility to help their kids practice and etc. Should this become more of a trend for other smaller schools?

Coaches and teams definitely will have their hands full trying to dethrone the Bay Springs team that nearly brings everything back.

Sidenote: I, along with many in this community, would have really liked to have seen the core from our McEvans 2018 homegrown middle school squad stayed together to represent this year’s senior bunch. Would've been a tough bunch to beat but they are not together in Shaw now. Unfortunately some parents’ belief of corruption/unorganized school district and this WBCSD administration has convinced several parents to move those kids to other schools over the past 3 years for potential better opportunities. Maybe about half of the kids from that full core team remains in the Shaw area now. That affects every sport being a small school. They did cover a little of the missing ground with some of kids from Ray Brooks whom the parents chooses Shaw school site over West Bolivar school site.

Despite last year team not having/discovering a qb and passing game until as the season went along, the team performed well and have much to build on for this year. To also have arguably the Delta’s top recruited athlete with multiple offers from every collegiate level this year, I really just hope for a good, productive, successful season and see where all the seniors decide to play at the next level.

Who are going to be the other competitive teams for the north and south besides Bay Springs and Simmons, who are seemingly the frontrunners currently?

TCPS is ineligible for playoffs this year due to recruiting violations so there will be a new Region 1 champ this year. Wouldnt be surprise if they also consider joining the MAIS in the future. What are your thoughts about the TCPS violation and playoff ban?

Well, the former TCPS HC says he did nothing wrong but there has been no comment from the AD who was also let go or from the head master of the school either.  I think the Tupelo coach had enough of it and turned them in.  The school was fined 5000 by the mhsaa.

Raleigh and Taylorsville have been on a steady and slow decline since Hurricane Katrina. My guess is students are graduating, going to college, jobs, marriage and living Hattiesburg and Jackson areas etc. Taylorsville is leadership issues especially the high school principal a few years back who became mentally unstable after fooling with females both teachers and students. Parents pulled their kids out. Now I here it's the principal at the Jr high running teachers off. Parents are living in Smith County but sending their kids to Simpson and Sylva Bay. Raleigh now has 2A numbers, 3A numbers Pre K to 8th grade. Discipline is a problem.  That same problem exists in Simpson County and Parents are sending their kids to Mize, Puckett, and Simpson.

If you're speaking athletically they've been pretty consistent over the last 20 years. Raleigh has always been a rollercoaster and Taylorsville is what they've always been. If you're talking about academics or societal leadership there's been a growing tendency in all schools, public and private, of poor-to-nonexistent leadership over the last decade that I don't see abating.

West Jones may be getting some Tville kids as well.

Taylorsville will be ok. Not that great, but not bad. They should easily make the playoffs, but I doubt they can beat bay springs for the region. They will have a tall athletic freshman QB who has some real potential. Nothing like Ty keyes was as a freshman, but plenty talented. I have coached against him every year in youth football since he was 7 years old. The issues with the school I really really hope get fixed. I think they are hiring a 3rd principal now to help get things fixed over there. They had to do that Raleigh a few years ago and it seemed to help so I’m sure they are hoping the same happens at Tville. Football wise, they are looking at being a little down from what they are used to. But dropping to 1A will help them, and if bay springs moves back up to 2A that will make things even better for them

We will have to see how TCPS handle it. The rules against Recruitment for schools like them (etc. private, boarding/disciplinary schools/catholic/charter) playing in public schools classification has always been a grey area as far as where kids can come from and their radius miles to create that school zone. There doesn't seem to be a problem with these schools participating in the MSHAA until it seem like they are dominating certain schools that some people expect should be in the mix in certain sports on a yearly basis. Rarely that it is that the bigger schools are feeling like guys are being stolen from their schools to play for smaller school. There Are a handful of schools that were once public are now private due to being targeted by the influencers from public schools who felt like they are cheating and/or being forced to have to apply a multiplier on their school enrollment to stay in the MHSAA. (Greenville St Joe, St Aloysius, Cathedral, Hartfield Academy). I believe Greenville St Joe has won a couple of championships outside of baseball since joining MAIS that they couldnt achieve while public. Some private/boarding schools/charter/catholic schools who remain public are TCPS, resurrection, madison st joe, french camp, piney woods, OLA(women), St stanislaus, and  MSMS in Columbus.
