Plumlee is now in also.  Not a big loss for OM, but he could be a difference maker at another school in another conference.

This one was very expected, JRP can put up some big numbers at the right school... I'd like to see him go to USM and put up some monster numbers.

The transfer portal seems to be a double edge sword. While there are numerous success stories, some players end up in no man’s land without a home.

I do think there needs to be some stipulations put in place.

1. The portal should not open until the season is complete for a given team. So if a team is in a bowl game, then a player is on the roster until the bowl game is played. If said player quits the team, he is not eligible for the transfer portal. Once the bowl game is played then they are free to enter the portal. In other words when a player starts the season with a team, he will finish the season before he can enter the portal.

2. This may already be in place but obviously they have to be in good academic standing before entering the portal.

3. Regarding coaches, a coach should be required to finish the season out with the team he is coaching. Unless he is fired with cause. Otherwise, coaches should complete their team’s season before entering their portal (pun intended). Any coaching changes should occur after the team’s season is complete (including bowl games).

4. Like the broken bowl system, the TP is breaking CFB. Overall, it is not necessarily a bad thing but there needs to be some order and some concrete guidelines that HAVE to be followed to make it work in an orderly manner.

In any case, that is my two cents that are worth zero overall. 🙂

My two pennies (like B4 said, is worth nothing), the NCAA dropped the ball on what they SHOULD have saw coming and didn't get ahead of this.

Open transfers were coming but it took a lawsuit (thanks Tom Mars) to open the door. The courts ruled in favor of the players.

Paying players was coming but it took state lawsuits to open the door, the courts ruled in favor of the players.

The NCAA is now trying to react to these two things with no real rules in place, it's their own fault for not getting ahead of it and seeing what was coming to put some rules in place on how to handle it.

A couple of great questions I'll attempt to answer with my limited knowledge:

1. When is a transfer a done deal/sure thing? It appears players can announce a new team, but it isn't done until the player attends the first class at the new university.

2. Have to be in good academic standing before transferring? I'm 99.9% sure NO.

RM,

Thank you. Regarding the first answer, that is why a commitment is completely worthless. Until the paperwork is signed, notarized and the player starts class, it is nothing but speculation.

On the second part, wow is my only answer there. If academics are not included in the minimum requirements (transfer portal and otherwise), then college football really is a joke these days. Only about .001 of players ever make it to the pros so the other 99.9 % become pros in something else. Academics should still be the primary focus of even the best players so they can hopefully be prepared to be productive citizens once they are on the N side of college.

The NCAA has definitely failed in staying ahead of the curve on these items. As soon as this started becoming an issue several years ago, they could have put in some hard guidelines to follow and then tweaked them as necessary as time moved along. Instead they did nothing and now it is total chaos.

I read an article that said a team can replace a scholarship player with another scholarship player that transfer as long as the player transferring is in good academic standing.  That only affects the school losing a player though, not the actual player transferring.  I’ll look for that article and link it.

I was actually looking to see if there is a date for transfer portal players to start signing, but I could only come up with they can start on the second signing period day up until school starts in the fall.  I’m also questionable about whether I read that correctly or not.

The article was discussing how transfer portal players affect the scholarship count.  It said to not expect teams to sign 25 high school kids anymore.   That’s a bummer for high school kids.

Zach Evans commits to OM. Interesting addition. Makes sense given that Ealy and Conner are leaving, and Evans is no doubt talented. That said his high school recruitment was a total circus and he had some injury issues at TCU. Does not have the greatest reputation in the world. A bit of a gamble but we will see if he’s able to replace the backs that OM lost.

Replacing 2,000 rushing yards and almost 30 rushing TD’s is certainly a big ask for next year’s OM team.

I just had an interesting thought.

Will the NIL deals eventually stop players from quitting their teams before the bowl games?

I can see a scenario where the deal requires the player to participate in all of the teams games or they have to pay back their benefits to the provider.

I also wonder if we will see a lesser number players jumping to the pros prematurely. Too many of them get bad information and then don’t get drafted or get waived and are left with nothing.

My opinion is I doubt, unless the NIL deal is coming from a local business, the companies care if they play one more game.

As for leaving early, it’s possible.   They guys getting “life changing” NIL deals though are going to be 1st rounders and they’re looking at more than life changing money in the NFL. Lol   I could see late round guys giving it a second thought.  It’s all about looking at a bigger picture, and that’s not always an 18-22 year olds strong suit.

Snoop could have helped his draft stock had he stayed another year

I doubt it. He’d still spilt time with Evans and Parrish. What more could he show? I love Snoop. Great down hill runner and he always came in looking to run someone over. I only wish he had played more.

If he gets drafted it’ll be late in 6th or 7th round, but some team will certainly sign him as an un-drafted free agent.

All it takes is the right amount of money.  Charlie Batch has publicly offered him $1m for one year to play at his alma mater Eastern Michigan.

That's what makes sense to me, Caleb is looking for a bidding war and will sign with the highest bidder- I don't blame him.

On the other hand, Caleb is supposedly looking at going where a coach develops QBs for the NFL (which also makes sense) and isn't necessarily looking at the short term pay. MC's past two years under Kiffin sure helps Ole Miss's chances under that scenario.

We'll see what happens, I sure lean towards Caleb won't be at Ole Miss.

Internet rumors are that Williams wants $2.25m to sign.   USC wasn’t pursuing him, which is odd because his previous coach is there, and UGA was out after being told what it would take, not because they couldn’t afford it but they think they have just as good of options for way less.   OU is still considering, but losing ground.  Also, Kiffin has put himself in charge of recruiting Williams and is texting him like a school girl.  Lol

The portal and NIL will be the death of college football. None of the top players will play for the love of the game and animosity will grow among other players because they don’t make big money.

Hopefully Ole Miss doesn’t get this Caleb kid. He sounds like a real prick. Reminds me of Shea Patterson.

If you’re an OM fan I don’t see how you would NOT want him.  More than likely he’d bring OU’s top WR with him.  That, along with Evans at RB, would put OM at the very least in the same position as last season.  Another 10 win season.

I just don’t want another Shea Patterson type. In it for the money and thinks he’s God’s gift to man. But other than I did say I’d rather have Arch Manning than Caleb Williams.
