It’s 100% always been Rogers’ job. Nobody else was ever going to start Game 1 barring injury/COVID/suspension, which I’m not aware of in any aspect for Rogers. As for his potential, I think he’s a high floor kind of QB that won’t make many terrible mistakes but is also not going to blow you away with arm talent. Very much a stereotypical Leach QB for the most part. He will get his yards, it’s just a question of how many attempts it takes to get these yards. 60 attempts for 300 yards like you saw at times last year isn’t going to accomplish anything in this league. Definitely gotta get more bang for your buck when you throw it that often. I like the crop of WR’s he has to operate with but the OL clearly needs to make big improvements from a year ago. OL play is perhaps going to be the difference in State winning 8ish games or not even going to a bowl game. If he had been an early enrollee then I would have, but he didn’t get here until June so I never expected a ton from him this year. Unless Rogers takes a major step forward and is one of the best QB’s in the league this year (which you can’t totally rule out given who his coach is), I would think it’s more of a competition next fall. MSTSatchmo
I had OM losing to Tennessee. That ain’t happening. They can put 50+ on UTenn.
MSTSatchmo
At mid season, I still have State going 5-7, but I think OM will finish at 10-2. I think either Auburn or A&M will give OM a loss, but not both. It’s more probable that they beat both as it is they lose to both. I still have State beating TN State and Vandy. Their best bet at getting 6, I thought a few weeks ago was UK, but I think it may be more likely they beat Arkansas if they were to get 6 wins. rebmus
It's hard to tell Satch. Ole Miss is currently ranked 12th- higher than anyone left on the schedule. I can see Ole Miss going 11-1. (Very doubtful, but it's not crazy talk to think it could happen). On the flipside, Auburn, A&M, and LSU have sure shown they can get up and play with good teams. The egg bowl is always crazy. I can also see Ole Miss going 7-5. (Again, very doubtful, but it's not crazy talk to think it could happen). 8 or 9 wins seems about right for Ole Miss to me. Bulldogs4
Two definite wins against Vandy, Liberty. Two probable wins against LSU and A&M. Both @ home but still each is capable of knocking off Ole Miss if they don’t play well. Two games that are winnable @Auburn and State. Auburn is a weird team. Ole Miss is clearly better than State but it is the Egg Bowl so you just never know. To me , a bit concern is Corral’s health. He is a great player but the physical toll of a game like last night could work against Ole Miss later in the year. I know he is tough as nails but an injury to him would be hard to overcome. State could be 5-7 to 7-5. Hopefully beat Vandy and obviously Tn. State. Then you have UK, Arky, Aub, and OM. It is possible that we win or two of those games but we could lose all four. We will see. USM has hit another 2012,2013 low. They are looking at a 1-11 season. Tough gig for Will Hall who I like a lot. Good coach in an impossible situation. rebmus
I've been an Ole Miss fan too long to call anything a "definite win"... but those certainly should be wins. Yeah, Corral's health is always a huge concern. Looking at his rushing stats, you'd think he was built like Newton/Tebow/Prescott. He isn't built that way at all, but he sure plays like he's that big. Him getting up limping on the next to last series was a worry to say the least. IF Ole Miss can get/stay healthy, it should be a pretty good year. Defense played much better yesterday with Springer back.
pancho
Will all the injured guys be back for the LSU game?
Dawg83
My prediction of 8-4 for both could technically still be right, and I did correctly peg both teams’ records through the midway point. Now I probably lean more toward 9-3 for Ole Miss and 6-6/7-5 for State. But I can be convinced State finishes 5-7 and Ole Miss goes 10-2. I think as we sit here today I’m expecting OM to lose at Auburn. And then I think they lose at least one game between LSU, A&M, and State. For State it all comes down to those four toss-up games that B4 mentioned. As of right now I don’t think State goes 0-4 in those games, though it’s not out of the question. I still tend to think they beat Kentucky at home, and then we will see beyond that. Anything above 2-2 in that stretch would be a pleasant surprise to me. And I would say 0-4 is probably more likely than 3-1 or 4-0. Edited October 18, 2021 by Dawg83
pancho
News out of Oxford today may dramatically affect the win total. Corral's ankle went numb saturday night. They are calling it a stinger. The Will Hall era is not off to a promising start at all. We look abysmal on offense, even when we had our starting QB in there. Passing game has been bad. Offensive line is as bad as I have seen ever. We signed some JUCO guys that I have not seen take the field on offense line. Defense has been consistent in my opinion but they spend tons of time on the field most games. Hall is going to have to get some players in fast or he will not be at USM long. Fans are already getting frustrated. I believe in Hall and think he is the right man for the job, but there has to be a vast turn around next season. Dawg83
Someone pointed this out to me yesterday and I found it interesting. State and OM both have the common denominator of a blowout loss to Bama, but State is 2-2 in games within a TD and OM is 2-0. That’s probably what you should expect for State, for Ole Miss we will see if the law of averages catches up with them or if they are able to keep winning those close games and have a special season. I feel pretty confident that both teams have several more close games on the schedule, the Egg Bowl possibly included.
