Maybe so Satch, we'll see how the season plays out.

MSU sure didn't look very good today, I think most of their fans will say the same... well, the sane ones anyway. Ha

Still, one game doesn't make a whole season. It sure does raise a lot of questions of how good MSU can be this year if they struggled THIS bad to get lucky to pick up a win at home vs La Tech.

It is entirely possible and maybe even likely that State is just going to be a bad team this year.

I do think it may be worth pointing out that Mike Leach has a LONG track record of games like today though. Even in years where his teams were good. So it’s also possible State ends up being OK.

State did not look good, make no mistake about it. The run in the fourth quarter was pretty impressive but otherwise they looked like a bad football team most of the day. As a State fan you can only hope the 1st and 4th quarters are more indicative of who this team is and hope they’ll play better.

I will note that I picked State to lose to NC State before the season and feel pretty justified in that today.

I have no idea what to think about today.

Credit to La Tech for playing well for three quarters. Unfortunately for them a game last four quarters. They are a veteran team that is going to be a tough out for everyone they play. Skip Holtz had some curious play calls in the fourth quarter but in fairness to him you do not want to go conservative too early either.

Obviously the KR by Griffin was the key play in the game. Momentum completely changed then.

First Negative: We stayed until the end. BIG THUMBS DOWN to all the fans who left. They missed a great finish.

On the field Negatives: OL was terrible for 2 1/2 quarters. Too many turnovers. They were a killer today. Defense gave up two BIG plays and were inconsistent as well.

Positives: OL came through in the fourth quarter. Defense had some big stops in the fourth quarter. Special Teams were very good and ended up being the difference. KR and the blocked FG in the fourth quarter kick started the comeback and then preserved the win at the end.
Coming back from a twenty point deficit against a quality team especially in the last 12 minutes of the game.
The main positive is we won the game.

Will have to digest the game for a few days before thinking about NCSTATE.

I agree with most of that B4, other than La Tech being a "quality team".

I say a quality team in the sense they are not a cakewalk win. They have played competitive football over the recent years. Obviously we should win more comfortably than one point.
But I knew the 23 point spread was too much.
We should not be trailing to them by 20 in  the fourth quarter.
But we were and we looked fugly for a good part of the game.
Much to be concerned about to say the least.

NC State just blew South Florida's doors in to the tune of 45-0 and Miss St. plays NC State next. To place matters into perspective, UGA sacked the #3 team in the nation 7 times last night while competing at a neutral site location while Miss St. managed only a single sack vs La Tech at home in Starkville no less. This means that even if Miss St. gets the offense clicking, that the offense for opposing teams will be able to pick the Bulldogs apart due to the total lack of a pass rush. The Bulldogs of Miss St. are in serious trouble this year and may have very well won one of if not their only game of the season already. I'm fascinated by the fact that Dan Mullen went 9-4 and routed Michigan in the Gator Bowl in 2010 52-14 in only his 2nd season after inheriting the mess left over from the Croom admin and that in year two under Leach that Miss St. is this dreadful considering Leach inherited a far superior program in comparison to Mullen. I'm also not convinced that Leach can get it done on the recruiting trail. Instead of his hire bringing a recruiting bump to our program, I feel like it was our program who brought a bump to his recruiting prowess. It's not coincidental that Leaches' highest ranked recruiting class ever just so happens to also be his first year in Starkville. This situation also highlights just how special the Dan Mullen hire was and how hard it is to win in Starkville, MS for whatever the reason/reasons may be. The only reason I'm not writing Leach completely off is that he didn't just get the job done at Texas Tech but rather he was able to have reasonable success at Washington St. as well. Things are certainly not looking favorable so for however. The older MSU alums would be wise to pre-emptively get pace makers installed during the Mike Leach tenure.

I don't see MSU losing to Tennessee State at all, and it's pretty doubtful MSU loses to Vandy.

Right now, I consider the MSU/Memphis game a tossup... but if MSU beats NC State next weekend, I'll definitely pick MSU over Memphis which puts MSU at 5 wins.

LSU could well quit on Orgeron.

The egg bowl is ALWAYS a tossup going into the game.

UK/ARK/AUB looked better than MSU yesterday, but too early to call those automatic losses.

MSU picking up 6 wins isn't a stretch at all right now.

Lose to NC State and follow up with a loss at Memphis... I say 3 wins on the season.

I edited my post to include a substantial amount of additional commentary probably while or after you replied to it so feel free to re-read but I'm picking NC State over Miss St. simply due to the fact that I feel like NC State would have blown La Tech's doors in. The Vandy and Memphis games are 50/50 for me right now and while I'm also picking Miss St. over Tennessee St. I'm no longer comfortable that it's guaranteed and certainly not the blowout it should be.

I replied before the edit.

That's a very fair post, I think we pretty much agree.

Leach- he has a pretty good (not great) long track record... much like Houston Nutt when he came to Oxford. He's also older and may be on cruise control to retirement, like Nutt was.

It's an interesting season ahead in Starkville.

NC State will run wild on State, and State will not beat Memphis either.

State will beat TN State and Vandy, but anything else will be a big upset.   OL/DL play and talent needs to greatly improve.  I’m not sure the talent level will though as long as Leach is there.

As brilliant as Kiffin is at play calling, I personally think the OL improvement was the key to OM’s offensive success last year.
