Had they not been mired with horrible coaching for the last decade it more they would likely have several titles and would have top 3-4 team in their class every year.  They could be the West Point of their class.  Tons of talent for a small school and it will remain as such till a larger school takes a chance on hiring away Daryl Carter. And even then they would have to whiff on the next coaching hire.

Or the state legislature passes the law allowing kids to pick and choose schools and most of them gets recruited away by jones county schools.

Carter makes over $90,000 a year at Heidelberg. Going to be hard to poach him away, even the bigger schools.

I agree. They've had several years where they had the talent and should have been way more then subpar.

I’m hearing bay springs has asked for a forfeit for the game with Heidelberg next week. Don’t know if it’s true or not. The only way I’m in favor of it is if bay springs gets the forfeit loss. You can’t give them a forfeit win.

If it is being played at Heidelberg then I can see it. If its at Bay Springs then maybe no fans from Heidelberg.  No fans may have to be the way going forward the rest of this season.

My interpretation of the MHSAA rules on page 44 of the Handbook:

4.10.10 Spectator or fan(Shooter)'s

1) Probation

2) $500 paid by the school

3) 1 yr probation of Spectator from all games

4) Other penalties as deemed appropriate for severity of the violation

4.10.11 Wholesome Competition (School)

1) 1 year probation

2) $1500 fine

3) Spectator on probation

4) 1 year no Home Games

5) Suspended Spectator from games

6) No fans at Games

7) No fans at Home or Away games

😎 School pays for hearings and meetings of the investigation by MHSAA

9) Other penalties as deemed necessary

I suppose what is deemed as wholesome. Alcohol & weed on campus may very well trigger the penalties. My guess also is that tailgating and parties on campus to an end. Hard pill to swallow if fans are told to stay home on Friday nights until October 11, 2026.

Why fans from Heidelberg?  The guy that was identified as suspect for the shooting was from Bay Springs.

Unless someone was arrested for weed or alcohol on school grounds then MHSAA can’t impose penalties on them for that.  Otherwise that could turn into a legal challenge to the MHSAA and they won’t want that.

I cod see tailgating being shut down.

I don’t believe the football team should be punished. The school itself should be punished somehow for allowing that environment on school campus. I don’t think this is the first time there has been a problem like this there , but this was the worst.

No they won’t. Their 9th and 10 graders are really good. Their whole team looks physically dominant.

I didnt see that when Enterprise played them they had a couple of good sophomores but most of their best players are seniors and juniors; and Heidelberg was dang horrible up until 2023 Quitman beat Heidelberg 60-0 in 2022 so I dont believe they had great athletes I think like a lot of small school they currently have an exceptionally talented group this senior/junior class almost won 2a in 2023 and very likely will win 2A the next two years but after 2026 they wont be nearly as good.

Doesn’t matter if you have a ton of athletes if you have trash coaching like they have had for years.  Even Carter in his previous coaching stints wasn’t exactly lighting it up. But he’s far better than Heidelberg has had the last few decades.

The fact that the shooting occurred on campus after the game is a problem.  According to the Handbook if he ever gets out on bond or parole he will likely be banned from high school events and campuses in the state. Its likely those killed had ties to both Bay Springs and Heidelberg.

We don't know if their victims were from Heidelberg or Bay Springs. I am sure there are family ties from both communities. Heidelberg fans may retaliate and Bay Springs likewise. We don't know what's been said back and forth already.

A lot of drinking and smoking weed on campus last night. Rumors last night were 4 dead in Heidelberg but news is reporting 2 have been killed.

Question? What does that first statement have to do with anything? That should’ve been the least of your worries

Schools have policies against alcohol and drugs. Its obvious that u can't stop a fan from drinking. You can denigh him or her entrance if you smell it or they dog drunk. Sometimes you assume the person shooting may have been impaired himself. As a parent you wouldn't want to be around it under normal circumstances. Some of us are simply not raised around it nor do we partake. But if u walk down the sidewalk going to the stands then u just make a judgement call. Enjoy the game and leave most likely afterwards.

The guy wasn’t from Heidelberg so once again, what does that have to do with anything? Obviously they knew what was going on and allowed it.

I get it but the guy wasn’t from there. Weed and alcohol wasn’t the problem, lack of security was. This happened well after the game was over

Uh, if you don’t see what that has to do with anything I don’t know what to tell you. Alcohol and drugs help contribute to violence. It should never be allowed to happen on any school campus.
