Basketball Season Thread

Jans oversaw this mess of a team and it’s on him to fix it. But he built up enough equity prior to this season to where he will (and deservedly should) get the opportunity to fix it next season.

I’ve made my stance known that if they continue to be terrible next season, it may be time to make a hard decision. But I also tend to trust Jans’ career track record and believe this year is likely a one year outlier rather than the new normal for him.

State looks like a one player train wreck when that one player isn't hitting 30 ppg. One dude can't carry a team in the SEC

that so true that other guard supposed to help him out he not helping out very much, State coaches and players depend on Josh Hubbard too much and it not going to change at all the offense go through Josh Hubbard

Well State with a must win tonight. And I know it was LSU who is/was worse than State.
Not much to read into this game except it was not a loss. And all wins on the road are good wins.

My biggest takeaway from that game is there will be a coaching vacancy in Baton Rouge soon.

will wade returns soon?

Think that ship has sailed. Second go arounds seldom match the first go arounds.
But coaching change in Red Stick is gonna happen…maybe this weekend but if not most likely before the end of the season.

Haven’t watched a ton of non- State or OM hoops this year but seems like a down year for the SEC overall. By no means the worst SEC ever, we all lived through the late 2000’s and early to mid 2010’s….. but just nobody that seems like a national title contender in the least, if we are being honest. State and OM are hardly the only two teams that have underwhelmed.

Agree. Florida looks good, Vandy after a bit of a slump is playing well. But that is about it.

A&M has been good but I have no confidence that it will continue.
Everybody is inconsistent.

We don’t talk much about the ladies but State had a huge road win at Knoxville last night over Tennessee (who was previously undefeated in conference play). We will see if it parlays in to more success as the season progresses.
They have had some tough losses but no doubt they are improving. Big game with Missouri Sunday in the Hump.
Definitely one I did not see coming.

I got home late last night and had no idea who won. Turned the replay on and after a rough start, the ladies ended the half on a 9-0 run to lead by 9. And then stretched it to over twenty in the second half and basically cruised home.

I was very pleasantly surprised.
I would agree this team was not expected to do much but if they make the tournament which the announcers last night felt confident that they would (especially with that win in your back pocket) that would be a heck of an accomplishment.

It pains me to say this but as good as Hubbard is, this year he has not been a good clutch player.

Today we are down three, he has a one and one to cut the lead to one. He misses the free throw.

And basically the game is over.

Have to make those Free Throws to put pressure on the other team.

I’m not one to doomcast people into the transfer portal…. But if for some reason Josh Hubbard decides he wants to play for an upper tier team in his last year, look no further than last night for a big reason why.

Hubbard scored 31, no other State player was in double figures, and they lost by 9 at home.

I’m still someone who thinks pretty highly of Jans, but man what on earth happened with the construction of this team. It’s Hubbard and a bunch of dudes who simply are not very good basketball players.

Missed terribly bad on his portal additions.

2nd year in a row, however if he had been able to keep the players that left last year, they probably would have had a better team.

The transition from one of the best defensive teams in the SEC his first two years to one of the worst the last two is surprising.

Last year they chased offense at the expense of defense, weren’t great at either, and the end result was they were an identical seed to what they were the year before.

I think the biggest issue this year is he whiffed colossally on post players. They thought Qunicy Ballard was going to be a true enforcer and he has been absolutely terrible. And nobody else is good enough to pick up the slack for him. I like JDF but he’s a true freshman still growing, wasn’t expected to contribute as much as he’s had to this year.

The individual talent appeared to be better than what they have played. Davis-Fleming and Grace are good Freshmen who look like they will develop into really good players.

Epps/McGhee have been wildly inconsistent.

And that spells doom in the SEC.

And the front line as you alluded has been bad to below average at best.
Jones is a good defender and a good complementary player but has zero ability to create his own shot unless it’s a dunk or rebound layup.
So yes we are bad defensively and without any offensive help Hubbard is getting blanketed every game.
All that to say Jans certainly deserves time and another year or two to get this thing back on track.
This season has been a disappointment to this point. Still 7 games to play plus the SEC Tournament. But my crystal ball does not see more than 1-2 possible wins at this juncture.

State @ Ole Miss tomorrow night. I will go back to my mantra. One team will lose this game and one team will not lose this game. I will say State has about 75% of losing and Ole Miss has about a 75% of chance of not losing. And that is being conservative, probably more like 85-90% if we are being honest.

This game is like one of those movie series that somehow gets a sequel even though the first one was terrible.

My eyes are still hurting from watching the first go-round in Starkville. Tonight is the sequel that nobody asked for.

State salvages the season split against OM. Hubbard redeemed maybe his worst career game from the first meeting and was great tonight.

Jans improved to 6-2 against Ole Miss and 4-2 against Beard.

Still two bad teams whose seasons are probably beyond repair. So a season split is probably about right.

I kind of equate this with the blind squirrel finally finds a nut. Don’t expect it to lead to anything further. And 83, you are correct that these two teams are bad. Maybe not as bad as OK, LSU & SCAR but not much better than either of them.
