These retired public school coaches getting into MAIS really is aggravating. It’s all about them getting a paycheck. PERS ought to suspend any retirement payments to these coaches just abusing the system. Off the top of my head, none have even won a MAIS championship. Most don’t make it more than 2-3 years. Really hurts the coaching profession as well by not giving a young coach a chance at a HC job and just recycling these old geezers.

Others may have a different opinion but young coaches need to get into the Pers system.  A lot of private schools do not pay anywhere close to what you would make as a public school teacher and on top of that they do not offer retirement until you get to a certain point.

I totally agree with this statement. You young coaches get in the pers system and lay a foundation for your future.

So is this a bad move?  I’m confused LOL!

I’m a little confused by this development too. Hence the frustration. I’d like to think he’s on ice for the possibility of Wayne County opening up in the near future but I also know that as long as certain people make the hire they would throw his application in the trash upon arrival as they would Coach Boyles’ too.

The ones that wouldn’t hire him a few years ago are no longer in control.

It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out.  I feel like there’s probably going to be a good bit of game hopping when Wayne County and Wayne Academy have home football games on the same Friday nights.  I mean if I lived in Waynesboro, I would definitely want to do it.

I hope you are right and will defer to you on the matter but I am just going to come out and say it.. Coach Hankins wants to win and is doing everything he can to put us on top. I could never get on board with forcing him out.
On the might have beens though I know that Marcus made sure what Coach Hankins was going to do before he took the Meridian job. That’s why he was hanging around town and the school right before Christmas.  Coach stayed so I will ride with him.

Breland also was eying what was going on. It is what it is.

He will be working with 25% of what he had with SJ. Granted the competition won’t be that stiff either.

The thing I don’t get is why West Jones didn’t reel him in.

I don’t see him being at the academy long. I can’t see the people who are in charge staying out of the way.

The way the PERS system is going and being abused, there won’t be one for the young coaches when they decide to retire in 20-30 years.

This makes no sense in reference to Breland or any retired coach/teacher. His PERS is set regardless it he coaches at an Academy or not. So, are you saying anyone who retires should not look for other ways of making a living and should just sit home and rot. You have retired people in all professions who retire draw pensions and start another carrier. It boggles my mind the number of haters in this world who just don't get it  and talk about things that they have no clue about.

I don't have an issue at all, with a coach getting his PERS years in, and then double-dipping. You cannot fault a coach for doing what's best for his family and himself. He gets full-retirement, and some spending cash on top of that,. Anyway, it's not like teachers get paid much at all, so you can't fault them for double dipping. We have actually had some retired public school coaches who have taken their school to the championship, Ricky Black, of course dominated at Prep, and Doug Goodwin has done the same in his legacy. Mangum took Wayne and Simpson to the State title game, but came up short both times. Look at the decline of St. Andrew's after David Bradberry stepped away from there. Regardless though, after you retire many people work to keep themselves active, and to find a pastime. Life after retirement can be very boring at times, and thus you can't fault a person to work a post-retirement career to supplement their incomes, and to keep themselves proficient.

Majority of the better and more stable MAIS programs are ran by long term/life long MAIS guys. Doesn’t mean retired coaches don’t do good, and sure doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be able to have access to their retirement.

Herbert

David King

Brian Pickens

Chase Nicholson

Sean Harrison (now in admin)

all great coaches and are MAIS guys.

Magnum is doing great. Barnes and Black did great.

a good coach is a good coach.

as far as Breland and Wayne Aca. They sure go through a lot of football coaches over there.

They haven’t been investing in Coaches like they seem to be doing now. They hired Dusty Hillman for baseball he has several state titles. Now Todd Breland in Football. I also read where they hired a new girls basketball coach sorry I don’t know her name. My point is they are going after good coaches. They had Todd Mangum he left to take the Simpson job but that’s home for him.

Ainsworth built that baseball program. Hiring Holman after him was a home run hire, but it started with ainsworth.
