Just curious. In your opinion, what has been the best defense and best offense that Picayune has faced this year?

I honestly think the best defense Picayune has faced thus far was probably Jefferson Davis County.  As far as offense goes I’ll have to chew on that thought for a while.

In the title of this thread shouldn’t the word runner be plural?

By naming the state’s best runner Mr. Dowdell, I was trying to keep you Tiders, Tidlings, Marooners from starting a controversy. Seriously, do those two ever fight over carries? I don’t think one is much better than the other.

Also curious, but didn’t Gulfport hold y’all to three touchdowns vs. four against JDC? Mainly curious because my Greyhounds just scored 58 on Gulfport, and I’m trying to sneakily start a little comparison trash talking.

Yes David that is correct.  I guess I should have been more specific.  Mancuso made adjustments at halftime and virtually shut us down offensively.  It was just too little too late at that point because the damage had already been done.  That win against Mancuso’s bunch keeps looking better and better.  They may be 3A, but they certainly don’t play like it.  I mean there’s a pile of 6A teams they could beat.

All right, all trash talking aside, consider it a compliment that I’m trying to compare Ocean Springs to Picayune and start the conversation about who’s the best on the Coast. I actually think that the Tide’s schedule was tougher overall, even in class 5A. Playing JDC, Poplarville, and Gulfport early on, and even d’Iberville in a normal year makes that the kind of pre district schedule that I wish O.S. could do. I know that Picayune shut it down on most teams in the second half, but O.S. did score more on Gulfport by a long shot. I thought that our defense was right there with the maroon defense, but I’m not sure any more. Again, good luck this week and into the playoffs.

Well Gulfport scored 33 on y'all and they only scored 7 on us, so you can clearly see who has the better defense there, but I think Ocean Springs is a great 6A school this year.  Do y'all have the horses to beat Tupelo?  I realize that question is a slippery slope, but the Golden Wave is real good this year.

im not making any predictions. i am also not sure that winning this game might not work against the winner if they match up agsin at south state. but winning the region and homefield throughout will be a big reward.

To this point Gautier has simply scored as much as they need to to beat everyone they played. the quick release on that QB is something. it will take a while for our defense to adjust to it.

i dont expect much punting. whoever can get a couple stops / turnovers will probably win. can’t let penalties or turnovers end your drives. Discipline will be key here.

re best rb in the state. i dislike comparisons like that. i will just say we have 3 i would not trade for anyone else. and several others who are excellent and ready to step up if needed.

Gautier defense is better than most realize. and their o-line is excellent pass blocking but we cant drop everyone back in coverage every play like i have seen other teams do. its important that we hurry their qb and put him on the ground some.

this is gonna be a good one.

That win vs Hattiesburg isn't looking too bad either. Since we're healthy I would not mind playing Ocean Springs or Oak Grove again.

Hattiesburg is definitely playing like a totally different team now.  A switch got flipped right after non-region play and they have been lights out for sure.

When Ocean Springs scheduled to play Hattiesburg these last two years, I assumed those games would be a great warmup for the season and prepare us for big, athletic teams we would see later. Obviously, the Tigers just weren’t ready for the early season, and the games weren’t competitive. Both years, they kicked it in after the “preseason”. I continue to pound the drum for O.S. to use these extra non district games to upgrade their schedule, maybe even traveling to Tupelo or some of the better north half teams. Scheduling weaker 5A or lower teams doesn’t help anything but the won/loss record. That goes for everybody at every level. I’m afraid that football overall in the state will suffer with the newest reclassification.

I do not think you will see much change. The teams that typically schedule a really good pre-region schedule, will continue to do so. The ones who do not, will not. I think the higher classes having 5 pre-region games will be a good thing because it will allow those top teams to schedule tougher opponents (again, those that traditionally do, will continue to do so).

I’m afraid that you’re right, but just imagine a team, Ocean Springs in this case, playing an early schedule of the best 5A team on the Coast, Picayune, the defending south state 4A champ, Poplarville, an out of state New Orleans super team like John Ehret or Carr, then two of the better north Mississippi programs like Madison Central and this year’s  presumptive north representative, Tupelo. They would go into the district with a 3-2 or worse record, but prepared for the district and the playoffs in a way that nobody else is. O.S. is probably looking for a new athletic director, but Mark Hubbard could do the upgrades in the schedule or wait for the new guy, who should be an experienced guy/gal with statewide connections. I’m only dreaming here, but that’s how you build a program with championship expectations every year.
