George County: What is going on?

I guess I'm a little bit curious, but what is going on at George County?  Before the season started I never would have envisioned them sitting at 0-5 with losses to teams like Greene County and West Harrison.  I feel like they'll probably get a couple of wins this year, but man I surely thought that when they made the move from 6A back to 5A that they would surely thrive and that hasn't been the case.  I know we've got some George County posters here on MST and hopefully you guys can give your honest take on what is going on in Lucedale.  Please feel free to share your insights.

From what I gather, it is a combination of things. Youth and inexperience on both sides. I am told the lines on both sides of the ball are not very good. Kids and community are not sold on Coach Ray either from what I have been told. Skill wise, they appear to be immensely talented. Hopefully they can get some things figured out.

The Rebels played much tougher last year with skill position athletes and gritty defense. That’s not the case this year. The young QB doesn’t have anybody to throw to, and their defense won’t tackle. I’m not sure if they will win any games this year unless it’s Long Beach or PRC.

Well I'll tell you this, your information is wrong on the defensive line. George County has phenomenal Defensive lineman. #99 for George County could very well be an SEC athlete and he's only a sophomore. Also, #97 and #95 are GIANT. George had an unfortunate loss to greene county, but other than that they've only lost to very good football teams. They're much better than the 0 for record that they hold right now. If the kids don't flat out give up on Coach Ray, I see them beating Vancleave.

Do you think that George County has a possible path to the play-offs?  And if so, what do they need to do realistically to make that come to fruition.

They do. They would have to beat Vancleave, Pearl River Central, and Long Beach all three to have a chance. Then they have to beat one of the big 3. Their best matchup is East Central or Gautier. Picayune just isn't a good matchup for anybody.

Well they've already lost to Gautier, so it looks like they'll have to beat Vancleave, PRC, Long Beach, and East Central.  They don't have any room for errors at this point.

If George County loses to Vancleave on Friday then I think they will be on the outside looking in.  That's definitely not where anyone had them before the season started, but I guess that's why you play the games.  If they beat Vancleave their playoff hopes are still alive, but they have to hold serve against East Central.

Long Beach and PRC should be wins.  Picayune, not so much.  Vancleave and EC are similar in schemes and they will have to pick off at least one of those.  Vs. EC and Vancleave they just about have to put a D lineman in every gap since they are blocking with about 9 people including the QB.  They throw 2 to 3 times a game and it's 4 down territory for about 75 yards. Good luck Rebels.

Maybe I’m overlooking something, but I don’t see how getting 3 district wins will get them in the top 4 for a playoff spot.  The only loss I see that they can afford at this point is to Picayune.  They’re already in the hole at 0-2 in district play.

Three wins with a points based three way tie breaker with WH and Vancleave is the most likely playoff path. Still not super likely tho

Can't speak for EC, but Vancleave is passing a bit more than 2-3x per game.

They've been lost since Al Jones retired and that was long ago.  It's like he took their identity with him upon departing.

I was just looking at that.  George County was 92-35 under Al Jones from 2001-2010, but since then they've struggled to find their footing.  Hopefully they can get things turned around in Lucedale.

West Harrison is FAR cry from a very good football team. The only team they've played with a winning record thumped them 47-21. George County has 2 terrible losses. At this point, it is hard to not just say George County is not a good football team. They gave up 50 points to West Harrison. Ocean Springs had over 400 yards rushing. The defense (as well as the defensive line obviously) is not very good based on the product that has been put on the field.
